Seventh Soul: True Dust

Chapter 1 - How it Began

Chapter 1 - How it Began

Apr 07, 2025

Snuffed out.

A pile of ash.

…A pile of dust.

That's all he was reduced to. Sans just stared vacantly at the heap of dust that he once called his friend - his breathing unsteady and his hand outstretched towards the deadly bones that jutted out of the ground, skewering the now empty armor and blue cloak. More dust gradually fell out of the armor and onto the pile below, the breeze gently carrying some of it away.

Sans slowly lowered his arm, letting out a sigh. Grillby…why had he tried so hard to talk to him? He should have known better…if Papyrus couldn't have convinced him to turn Frisk in…what made him think he would be able to? Now he's just like the others. He had forced Sans' hand. Gave him no choice.

Sans stared at the dust pile. He had no expression. He was slowly becoming more and more numb to this. It had been 2 weeks now since he had been discovered at the door with Frisk. Since she was found out because of him. Just over a week and a half since…

Since he had killed Papyrus…

There was a pang of guilt. Of grief. His eyelids lowered slightly as he tried to repress his thoughts of that day…of how many monsters he's had to dust since then. It had to have been at least a dozen…maybe more, maybe less. He wasn’t sure. Not like he was exactly keeping count. All he knew…was that it was getting easier. And he wasn't sure how he felt about that.

But Grillby…this one hit a little harder. Stung a little deeper. Other than Frisk, Grillby was probably his closest friend. This was the first one in a while that…hurt.

Sans knew it would only get worse from here. He had to face an entire army. Undyne. And eventually…the King himself. He knew he was in for literal hell. The thought made him shudder, but the thought of the alternative made a pit from in the base of his stomach. It simply…wasn't an option.

He finally tore his eyes away from the scene of Grillby - or rather…what used to be Grillby. He had to go back to the Ruins again. See if Frisk was there this time. He had gone back a few times since their last meeting…when he finally told her about being a Royal Guard…and told her about Papyrus. She hadn't been there at all, though. It was strange…not like her. Sure, they didn't set up a proper meeting time like they usually did, but they always met up around the same time. He had expected to find her there at least once by now. He really needed to talk to her. Update her on what was going on. Explain things.

He wondered for a moment if…he had scared her. He did drop a lot on her all at once. Sans frowned, worried if maybe Frisk was too scared to come back. He should have explained more before running off…but he really couldn't stick around for so long since he had to act quickly.

He let out a frustrated sigh, offering one last glance back at Grillby’s empty armor. Why was he even out here in the middle of Snowdin forest all alone? He was usually partnered with Diz…All Guardsmen had a partner to patrol with. Had he come on his own volition? The thought of that only made him feel worse…until it dawned on him just how unorthodox that really was. Especially now…

His head snapped up in the direction of the Ruins.

“Frisk-”
Sans uttered her name urgently as he suddenly realized - this WASN’T normal. Something wasn't right about this.

Sans quickly teleported, appearing in front of the Ruins door instantly. His head jerked up and his now crimson red eyes grew wide as they fell on the devastation that lay before him - confirming his fears.

“No…”
His heart sank to the pit of his stomach.
“NO!”

The Ruins door was in shambles, blown wide open. For the first time ever, Sans could see inside. He ran forward, skidding to a halt at the entrance and gazed down the long, dark corridor. His breathing was picking up pace along with his heartbeat. Shaking his head in disbelief, he quickly leapt over the rubble of the door and into the hallway, dashing down the corridor and dodging more rubble along the way.

“FRISK!?”

Sans yelled for Frisk desperately, searching for any sign of life. He ran up the stairs and into what appeared to be a small home interior. It looked like the place was ransacked and like a brief struggle even took place. He could see scorch marks and multiple gashes along the walls, a chair next to a fireplace was torn to shreds, a bookcase was knocked over and broken to pieces. Sans began to panic. How could this have happened!? When could this have happened!? He called out Frisk’s name again.

“FRISK WHERE ARE YOU!?”

He ran into what appeared to be a kitchen and suddenly stopped in his tracks. There was a small pile of burnt rubble on the floor in front of the counter, and underneath it…appeared to be something humanoid in shape wearing robes or a dress of some kind. He gasped, quickly running over to the person under the rubble and began to swiftly remove the debris.

“F-Frisk??”

Sans wasn’t sure if this even was Frisk, but it was the only living thing that seemed to be here. However, the more debris he removed, the less and less he thought it could be her. This person was much too large to be a human…and much too…furry. In fact…Sans didn’t think it was a person at all anymore. This was definitely a monster.

Once all the debris was cleared, Sans circled around to get a better look at the monster. She looked…strangely very similar to Asgore in species. In fact, Sans was pretty sure this was Frisk’s mother based on brief, vague descriptions of her that Frisk had given him in the past. She looked like she was out cold, but clearly not dead considering she wasn’t dusted.

Sans grimaced, looking urgently around the kitchen some more. He considered getting up and looking for Frisk again…but he felt he couldn’t just leave her mother laying here like this. Maybe she could tell him what happened. Sans reached his hand out towards the monster’s face, pausing hesitantly for a moment, before quickly patting her on the cheek.

“H-Hey. Wake up. Miss…Miss Frisk’s Mom?”
Frisk never told Sans what her name was, so he wasn’t sure what to call her.

He patted her for a bit, shaking her shoulder impatiently until finally…her eyes started to slowly blink open. Then they quickly shot open as she sat up suddenly, instinctively summoning a vortex of fire around her, causing Sans to leap backwards.

“STOP!”
Toriel’s eyes snapped over to look at Sans angrily, her expression wrinkling with the sort of fury that only an enraged mother trying to protect her child would have. She immediately saw Sans’ uniform and armor, and stood up to tower over him, grabbing him by his scarf with her large clawed hand.
“WHERE IS MY DAUGHTER! YOU CANNOT HAVE HER!”

Sans instinctively grabbed Toriel’s soul, yanking her off and away from him and throwing her against the far wall. She slid back down to the ground with a soft thud, her hands clenched in anger. Sans just stared at her, his jaw tight and his red eyes wide with fear. Not fear of Frisk’s mother, but with what she had just confirmed.

Frisk had been captured.

Seventh Soul: True Dust is an alternate timeline of the novel series "Seventh Soul Dust", which is an alternate universe of the comic series "Seventh Soul." Yes...this runs deep lol. I have a problem.

In the Seventh Soul universe, everyone in the Underground has been drafted into the Royal Guard and turned into human hunting machines, including Sans. They are also sworn by oath to kill any human that enters the Underground. Sans, however, has a secret - a best friend who happens to be human and also the seventh and final soul needed to break the barrier. In the original universe, this ends up being a pretty big problem as Sans is working towards helping his human friend, Frisk, escape the Underground to the safety of the surface.

In the True Dust universe, things take a much darker turn for the worst. Shortly after Sans starts to kill everyone in a desperate attempt to save Frisk from being captured (including his own brother), Frisk is captured anyway - and killed before Sans can stop it. In an act of pure rage and grief, Sans ends up absorbing Frisk's soul and unleashes hell upon the Underground. This novel will basically be me obsessing over this character and it's lore by telling it's story since so many people seemed interested in it. Lawd help me.

Anyway, I highly, *highly* recommend reading the comic series this originates from first (Seventh Soul) AS WELL AS the Seventh Soul Dust novel, since this series will BEGIN from Chapter 2 of the Seventh Soul Dust novel. Otherwise, you may be pretty confused. I'll put a disclaimer in the first chapter about this.

Both series can be found here on Tapas!
