Seventh Soul: True Dust

Chapter 4 - Old Dogs, New Tricks

Chapter 4 - Old Dogs, New Tricks

Apr 10, 2025

CRASH

A javelin was launched through the window at Sans, but he was quick to teleport out of the way. He spun on his heel to look at his assailant in the eye, his smirk widened.

“Well, well, well. The hounds are here.”
Sans voice was dripping with malice as he looked at not one, not two, but five monsters standing outside his now broken window - situated side by side in a sort of semicircle. He tilted his head to the side as he eyed each and every one, all of which brandishing weapons.
“Dogamy…Dogaressa…even the Lesser AND the Greater Dog…”
Sans let out a chuckle, crossing his arms casually. His eyes landed on the last monster, causing his eyebrows to raise slightly and another chuckle to escape him.
“Doggo…Long time no see. How’s sentry duty treating you?”

Sans just stood there, smiling at them all - especially Doggo, who wasn’t even a Royal Guard. Just a mere Sentry. Out of all of them, he spoke first.

“Shut it, Sans! Don’t talk to me like we’re friends!”
Doggo held up one of the swords he was brandishing towards Sans, baring his teeth.
“We’re ending this…this reign of terror! Now!”

Doggo was shaking slightly - a mixture of fear and anger - and Sans could clearly see that. It only made him smile wider as he tilted his head to the other side. He took a single step forward, causing all the dogs to flinch instinctively and take a step backwards in response. They quickly held their weapons up higher, all visibly shaking just as much as Doggo was.

Sans stopped and looked around at the scared little dogs with their tails between their legs. He let out a soft chuckle again, then sarcastically put a hand on his chest, leaning forward slightly and putting on a mock frown.
“You wound me, Doggo. I thought we were pals.”

Doggo snarled, taking a brave step forward and keeping his sword pointed at Sans.
“You’re not that same Sans anymore. He’s gone. Died with Commander Papyrus a long time ago.”

Sans’ eyes flashed brighter for a brief moment and a small puff of purple smoke emitted from his left eye. He slowly leaned back again, not saying anything for a moment - then his smirk returned and he shrugged, gazing back at the four dog Guardsmen.
“You know…It’s funny that you guys actually show up here...now. After all, I have been looking for you four…only…”

In a flash, Sans suddenly appeared behind Lesser Dog - who was standing in the middle of the five - grabbing him by his scruff and slamming him into the ground like he was nothing. Lesser Dog yelped as his sword went flying out of his hand and slid across the snowy ground - Sans burying his knee into his back, holding him there by his neck helplessly. The other four dogs gasped in shock and flinched away again, taking multiple steps backwards but swinging their own weapons around to point them at Sans. Sans just shook his head, tilting it to the side as he looked down at the pathetic Guardsman below him.

“I was actually hoping to save you guys for last.”
He shrugged, letting out a malevolent chuckle.
“Oh well.”

Sans smiled and suddenly clenched his fist around Lesser Dog’s neck. Any pitiful sound he made before he started to dust was lost amongst the raging war cries of the other four hounds as they leapt towards Sans, swinging their weapons down on top of him.

But it was all in vain. Sans moved so quickly, he was already gone by the time their weapons landed - only crashing down on the dust pile that was once Lesser Dog. Before any of them knew it, Sans was already behind Greater Dog, turning his soul blue and sending him flying skywards. Sans stood casually behind the spot where Greater Dog was just standing, looking at the other three with a sly grin as the bulking mass of dog was launched upwards and into the cavern ceiling. He snapped his fingers, summoning a volley of spiked purple bones that immediately launched themselves upwards as well and at Greater Dog, who was stuck in the rocks above - only to be pelted by the bones like a pin cushion. Greater Dog went limp, and slowly began to dust - his massive armor falling to the ground below. Sans caught his huge chestpiece in a single hand without taking his eye off the last three remaining dogs. He smiled at them, tilting his hand forward and allowing the chestpiece to slide off and fall to the snowy ground with a loud thud.

“...And then there were two…”
Sans tilted his head, glancing at Doggo. He let out a soft laugh.
“...And a sentry.”

Doggo bared his fangs, his face scrunched up in anger. He was trying to stay brave, but he was shaking harder than before. He just watched two of his friends die - crushed like mere insects. And they were Royal Guards!
“S-Stop this, Sans! These are your COMRADES! Don’t you feel ANYTHING!?”
Doggo was angry, but desperate. He was beginning to feel hopeless at winning against Sans, but thought that maybe there was a shred of a chance that he could still get through to him with words.

“T-There’s no use talking to him, Doggo. He’s long gone.”
Dogaressa finally spoke, her voice was shaky.

Sans suddenly appeared right in front of Dogaressa, her face clutched tightly in his hand.
“Oh ho ho…now look who finally decides to speak. What’s the deal, poochie? Not gonna run away from me this time?"
Sans was angry - his tone was bitter and laced with resentment. It was taking every ounce of restraint within him right now not to dust Dogaressa on the spot. Dogaressa…and her husband.

“GET YOUR HANDS OFF HER!”
Dogamy swung his fist right at Sans head, abandoning his axe on the ground as he didn’t want to risk hitting his wife with it. Sans only smiled, immediately vanishing again - causing Dogamy to swing at the air and stumble forward. Sans appeared again behind him, catching him mid-fall by grabbing the scarf of his cloak from behind. He yanked him backwards and into a choke hold, summoning a bone and holding it to his throat - stopping Dogaressa and Doggo in their tracks. Dogamy tried to struggle at first, but quickly stopped when Sans only threatened to push the point of the bone harder against his skin.

Sans let out a bored sigh, rolling his eyes at Dogamy’s fruitless attempts.
“Like I said. I reeeeally wanted to save you guys for last. You two, especially. But since you seem soooooo eager to die…”
Sans pushed the bone’s sharp end closer to Dogamy’s neck, causing the hound to recoil and  try to push Sans’ arm away.

“STOP!”

“SANS, PLEASE!”

Dogaressa and Doggo both shouted in tandem, and Sans just…didn’t seem to care. He did want to save them for last. For what they did. For everything they caused. Dogamy and Dogaressa…they WERE the reason for all of this. They WERE the ones that tracked him down and found him at the door. THEY were the reason Frisk was dead. THEY should be the ones to suffer the most. He could feel his anger start to bubble up again just thinking about it. His grip on the bone he was holding tightened, and suddenly...he didn’t care about waiting anymore. He didn’t have the patience. He was determined to see them dead for what they did. He clenched the bone, ready to use it to turn Dogamy to dust…but…

“SANS, NO!”

Sans suddenly couldn’t move. Just like before, he completely froze. His body unresponsive. But this time, it wasn’t only due to the mysterious force that was trying to stop him again - it was also because…that voice…

“...F-Frisk…?”
Sans breathed her name, his eyes were wide with shock, his entire body frozen in place. He couldn’t move even if he tried, like the strange resisting force had finally had him locked down.

Seventh Soul: True Dust is an alternate timeline of the novel series "Seventh Soul Dust", which is an alternate universe of the comic series "Seventh Soul." Yes...this runs deep lol. I have a problem.

In the Seventh Soul universe, everyone in the Underground has been drafted into the Royal Guard and turned into human hunting machines, including Sans. They are also sworn by oath to kill any human that enters the Underground. Sans, however, has a secret - a best friend who happens to be human and also the seventh and final soul needed to break the barrier. In the original universe, this ends up being a pretty big problem as Sans is working towards helping his human friend, Frisk, escape the Underground to the safety of the surface.

In the True Dust universe, things take a much darker turn for the worst. Shortly after Sans starts to kill everyone in a desperate attempt to save Frisk from being captured (including his own brother), Frisk is captured anyway - and killed before Sans can stop it. In an act of pure rage and grief, Sans ends up absorbing Frisk's soul and unleashes hell upon the Underground. This novel will basically be me obsessing over this character and it's lore by telling it's story since so many people seemed interested in it. Lawd help me.

Anyway, I highly, *highly* recommend reading the comic series this originates from first (Seventh Soul) AS WELL AS the Seventh Soul Dust novel, since this series will BEGIN from Chapter 2 of the Seventh Soul Dust novel. Otherwise, you may be pretty confused. I'll put a disclaimer in the first chapter about this.

Both series can be found here on Tapas!
