Chapter 2: Dreams, Doubts, and Glimpses of Gold

The stars twinkled faintly above as the gentle hush of night wrapped around the Nanairo home. Liz, now tucked under the warm blanket of the shared futon, nestled between her two brothers—Wakasa, her dependable older brother, and Ren, the youngest with sleepy eyes and a tiny plush toy clutched in his arms. Her eyelids fluttered closed as the day’s little thoughts and big dreams melted into sleep.

And then, like a soft breeze, the world shifted.

In her dream, Liz stood beneath dazzling lights, her dress shimmering like stars, a microphone in her hand, her voice echoing through a grand concert hall. Thousands of people chanted her name—“Liz! Liz! Liz!”—with admiration gleaming in their eyes. Golden confetti rained from above, and photographers rushed to capture her smile. She was rich, loved, unstoppable. She wasn’t just dreaming… she was living the life she longed for.

But dreams, no matter how beautiful, always end with the pull of reality.

In the dim light of their bedroom, just a wall away, a different kind of tension lingered.

Their parents lay side by side, the silence between them heavier than the night air. Liz’s mother, a woman with tired eyes and a heart full of worry, turned to her husband.

“You’re hiding something… aren’t you?” she whispered, her voice barely above the soft hum of the night insects.

Her husband, still dressed in his creased work clothes, didn’t look at her right away. He exhaled slowly, then turned with a faint smile. “It’s nothing. Just stress. Work’s been… heavier than usual. Don’t overthink it.”

“But—” she began, only for him to gently place a hand over hers.

“Please. Let’s just rest tonight.”

Reluctantly, she nodded. But her eyes remained open long after his had closed.

---

The golden sunlight spilled into the room like honey through the curtains. Liz stirred, the last sparks of her dream fading into the air. She sat up, rubbing her eyes.

The bed was empty.

Everyone else was already up.

She hurried to the kitchen where the familiar smell of warm miso soup and rice filled her nose. Her mother, wearing a slightly faded apron, greeted her with a smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes. Her father sat silently at the table, lost in thought, while Wakasa helped Ren with his chopsticks.

The siblings quickly finished breakfast, their schoolbags slung over their backs, shoes hurriedly tied, and then out the door they went.

The day at school passed like any other. Liz focused more than usual, her teacher’s voice echoing in her head about “goals” and “future ambitions.” Her dream lingered in the corners of her mind. She doodled a tiny microphone and a stage in the margin of her notebook.

When the school bell rang, the siblings walked back home together. The air was crisp, the sky painted with hues of lavender and fading blue. Birds chirped, bicycles rolled past, and life moved gently.

But then…

A sleek black car rolled slowly down the nearby street. Behind it came two others, and between them walked a boy no older than Liz, dressed in an expensive navy-blue suit with golden embroidery. His shoes gleamed. His posture was perfect. His face was expressionless, but his aura screamed importance.

By his side walked his father—tall, powerful, and speaking into a phone while flanked by several sharp-eyed guards in dark suits. The boy’s gaze swept over everything like a prince surveying his kingdom.

Liz stopped in her tracks.

Jealousy pricked her heart like thorns. Why was he so lucky? Why couldn’t she live like that? She gripped the strap of her schoolbag tighter.

“Someday…” she whispered to herself. “I’ll be like that. No, better.”

Wakasa, sensing the storm in her heart, gently touched her shoulder. “Hey… being rich doesn’t always mean being happy, you know,” he said with a smile. “You’ll find your own way, Liz.”

She looked at him, her heart calming a little. Wakasa always knew the right thing to say.

Just as they turned to walk away, a small voice piped up from behind them.

“Wait…” Ren blinked, squinting as the cars drove away. “That man with the guards… he looked just like Papa…”

The siblings paused.

Liz and Wakasa turned sharply, their eyes following Ren’s gaze—but the cars were already gone, leaving behind only a trail of dust and curiosity.

“Are you sure?” Wakasa asked, his tone unsure.

Ren nodded slowly. “Yeah… I think so.”

And just like that, a crack formed in the peaceful picture of their life—a question that hung in the air, unspoken but impossible to ignore.

Title: Where Hope Rises

When Mizuki’s mother and older brother are killed in a "tragic accident," her world crumbles—except it wasn’t an accident. It was a mission. It was planned. And she knows it.

But in a world where only boys can stand on the court, Mizuki hides her identity and becomes someone else—a mysterious boy no one can trace. Not even her twin brother.

Fueled by revenge and carrying the weight of secrets, Mizuki steps into the all-boys volleyball arena, determined to defeat the enemy who took everything from her. But as the game unfolds, family ties, mafia wars, and hidden betrayals collide.

Her uncle, once family, is now her enemy. Her father hides painful truths. And the man pulling all the strings? He’s closer than she ever imagined.

How far will Mizuki go when the only way to win… is to become someone she’s not?
