Chapter 12: Forging a New Path!

Chapter 12: Forging a New Path!

Apr 13, 2025

A month passed since the day we decided to be a team, the day my life truly started. Every day, and night following I trained for the first time in my life, I started going to the gym with Bryce, and learning to understand my powers more. I didn’t want to be a liability to Bryce, and Iris, I wanted to be able to fight side by side with them. For that to happen I needed to better understand who I was. This was my path to being a hero.

I got up from my bed yawning, and called out my mom’s name to see if she had finally returned.

“Mom!, are you back!, you know it’s been awhile, and I really miss you…dad seems more shut off then ever before. He doesn’t even stop by the house anymore, just weekly check up calls. I miss you, and your cooking. I miss the way you would cheer me up, and hug me like I was your world, I’m sorry I took that for granted. I just want you back now, please come back, I promise I’ll never take you for granted again… I promise.” I choked as tears began to fall down my face. I had to go to school . Though I couldn’t waste forever just sitting here, I still had to go to that even if I didn’t want to. Plus today was supposed to be exciting. Me, Bryce, and Iris were going to show off the results of our training to each other. A month of hard work was finally going to pay off. I was going to reveal my deviation's name in front of the group. I rushed through my morning routine, throwing on a new outfit, and heading for the door. Right before I could step out I paused for a second looking back in the empty house. “I promise mom, I’ll make you proud, so when you come back I can see your smile again.” I slammed the door behind me running to catch the bus, to make sure I arrived at school in time in case of any delays. Which of course there was…, when I was just a few blocks away my bus broke down which forced me to have to walk the rest of the way.

“Yoooo, my main man! What’s up Jaye, how are you doing today? I'm so excited for after school!” Bryce said running to catch up with me.

“I’m good! I think I have a breakthrough on my Deviation that’ll change how I fight. Instead of like BOOM, it’ll be like a bang bang, you know what I mean?” I replied.
“Uhh… No dude, I don’t, but that’s good, I like being able to hangout after school, but I hate doing all that gardening work.”

I turned to face forward, and thought about what Bryce said, he’s right I don’t really even like gardening, but for some reason I look forward to going to the club everyday after school.

“Well… as your best friend, you should give me a sneak peak of your training” I said, nudging Bryce’s arm.

“Nahhh, you have to wait just like Iris, plus it wouldn’t really be a surprise if I just outright told you right?”

It was just for a second, but me and Bryce paused, as we heard a rustle in the bush, and the sounds of twigs snapping filled the air. Bryce whipped around, but he didn’t see anyone, not even a hint that there was once a person there.

“What was that? I swear I heard someone there, but I didn't see anyone but it’s not like they could have vanished from right in front of us.”

“That’s so strange, I was feeling like someone was watching us, but I couldn’t place it, but this just confirmed it. But maybe not? A person couldn’t just vanish right into thin air.” Bryce responded.

We continued walking to school, but the sense of unease wouldn’t leave, was someone following us? It could have just been a rabbit, or some other type of wildlife, I can’t think of a reason someone would want to follow us.

Once we arrived in front of the school, Bryce, and I waved goodbye before heading our separate ways for our first class.

“Hello class, today we’ll be taking a second of the day to talk about some current events that have been rumored to be occurring in our school as of lately. Young ladies all around the school have reported items going missing from their bags, and their things being left places they didn’t leave them. If you know anything about this please don’t hesitate to tell anyone, as this is a serious matter, and we won’t tolerate any type of creep in our school.” Mr.Johnson said.

What a creepy dude, who would go around doing such a thing?

“Anyway class, today we’ll be learning about the pythagorean theory, which is found by doing-”

I accidently started dozing off, and before I knew it I fell asleep at my desk. It wasn’t that I meant to go to sleep, but it was just so hard to listen to him go on endlessly about nothing.

The next thing I knew, I felt a kick at my desk before my head shot up. In a panic I just said anything.

“The answer to the question is Velocity!” I blurted out.

“Jaye’sun you know this is math class right? You slept through the whole thing, you can’t stay up late, if your grades drop any lower they might let kick out.” Iris jokes.

“Damn, well you didn’t have to be so rude about waking me! You couldn’t have tapped my shoulder or something, you scared me.”

She started to laugh before leaving the class, “I’ll see you after school KK?” She waved goodbye before leaving the class.

I got up from my seat, and hurried to my next class knowing I was going to be late. I thought about just not going, but I know I promised my mom I was going to do better in school.

As I continued to walk, through the hall I felt someone grab my shirt, and pull me into the bathroom.

“Hey nerd, who do you think you are? I’ve been seeing you hanging around school recently, and I got curious because what was a loser like you staying for. Gardening huh? What a lame ass thing to do, I bet you’re only there because you’re trying to get close with that new girl right?” Wade Johnson said.

“I don’t owe you an answer to anything okay? Don’t you have something better to do then to follow me around, can you just get lost, and bother someone else.” I stated.

He looked shocked to see me say something back. I usually would just let him walk over me, but as of recently I had too much going on to deal with a school bully.

“What did you say to me? I don’t know why all of a sudden you have a big head, but if you don’t watch it, I’ll give you a reason to shut your mouth!” Wade exclaimed.

“See, like did you hear yourself speak? If you don’t mind, I have to go to class.”

I made my way to the door but just then he threw a punch aiming for my face, but I moved out the way, causing him to hit his fist on the door.
He gripped his hand in pain, before starting to curse me out.

He threw another punch before slipping back and falling on some water that was on the ground.

“Dammit don’t you dare look down on me, you bottom feeder.” he looked away.
I wanted to just leave him on the floor, but I was better than that. I extended a hand out towards him to help him up. But he slapped my hand away though.

The door closed leaving him in the room by himself, and shocked at what happened.

The rest of the day came, and went till the final bell rang, reminding me that the school day had finally ended.

I opened my locker, grabbing my bag, when I suddenly felt someone shove my back causing me to hit my head on the locker.

“You thought you could just get away with what you did earlier?” Wade snickered.

I rubbed my head, trying to take in what’s happening before I felt a punch connect with my face.

“What? You can’t talk now, come on talk that big game you were talking about earlier!”

He punched me again, before spitting on me, and walking off after kicking my bag.

Even after getting these powers, I’m still at the bottom of society. Maybe if I just told people about my powers, I would be cooler.

No.. That's dumb, I can’t let this guy get in my head, he’s just some bully.

Iris walked by seeing me look visibly shaken, and beat up.

“Hey Jaye’sun are you okay! I heard a loud bang when walking down the halls, and hurried to see what happened, who did this to you?” she questioned.

“Oh it’s nothing, hahaha, I just got into a bit of confrontation but it’s nothing big to be honest! I can take a hit or two, plus it didn’t really hurt, just caught me off guard you know?”

She looked worried but didn’t seem to want to push it anymore if I didn’t want to talk about it.

“Well oh great leader, let’s get going, those plants aren’t going to water themselves.” I started making my way towards the room, as I quickly whipped away the tears that started to form.

We arrived in front of the club room door, when I kicked open the door, and threw myself onto one of the nearby bean bags. We recently got to liven up the room.

“Man, am I happy to be back, this club is really coming along, we’ve gotten some much done, and this place looks more, and more like a real club everyday.” I said, leaning back.

Just then the door swung open, with a loud bang causing the door to slam against the wall.

“Is this a club?Who approved of this dump? My fault let me introduce myself I’m-”
“Y-y-you’re Lucas Moore!, you’re like the coolest guy around school, and your father is a super wealthy businessman, I know all about you!”

I paused after realizing I might have said too much, and didn’t want to make myself look like a fan anymore.

He let out a chuckle before continuing to speak

“Yes that is me, and you’re… yeah I don’t really care to learn your name, I’m just here because I heard news of things going missing after school, and came to investigate some after school activities. But you guys clearly seem to be minding your business, so I guess I have no qualms with your presence. You do know though, you need 3 people to keep a club running, otherwise you’re just leeching off of the school resources.” Lucas quipped.

“Look sir, I really don’t know you, and nor do I care to get to know you, and for your information we have 3 members. The last one is just running a bit late, so if you don’t mind can you please leave.” Iris responded sternly.

“Well then I’ll take my leave, I hope I’ll have your vote in this next coming student election, let me make this school a better place, there’s enough going on with the rise in Deviants appearing around the city.”

“What did you say? What does this have to do with any Deviants, it’s not like they're bothering you.” Iris said.

“How could they not bother me? Their existence is unnatural, and taints the balance of the universe, so many of them view themselves above the rest of us, and why because they were born “lucky”. Life has enough luck in it, I’ll earn my keep in this world, through hard work, nothing will define me outside of me, I will carve my existence into the universe through my own tears, blood, and sweat.” Lucas declared before swiftly leaving the room.

“What a douchebag, I mean he waltz in here, all high and mighty thinking he runs this place, people like him or almost as bad as Wade, and to talk like that. He doesn’t know the struggle we go through everyday hiding who we are so we can appear to people liking of everyone else. Calling us “lucky” there’s nothing lucky about these powers, nothing at all!” Iris stated as she grabbed one of the water pitchers, and headed out the door to fill them with water.

The door swung open again, with another loud thud following.

“MAN, I’M SORRY I’M LATE! I was finishing up my workout, and I got a little distracted. Where did Iris go?” Bryce said out of breath.

“She just left, she seemed pretty upset. Lucas just came by, and said something that annoyed her.”
“Lucas? He was here but for what reason? He never stays after school unless he has to for student body government stuff. Did he say what he wanted?” Bryce responded.

“Just him investigating the missing things from around the school, one of your teachers should have brought it up earlier in your first period class.”

The door swung open again.

“CAN EVERYONE STOP PUSHING THE DOOR SO HARD, JUST OPEN IT NORMALLY!” I shouted.

“My fault Jaye’sun, but you don’t need to yell you know? Anyway I have news about all the recently missing stuff. We might not be the only Deviants in this school after all.” Iris said.

“You mean there can be someone else? I mean that’s a pretty bold assumption to make.” I responded.

“I’m almost certain of it, take a seat I’ll tell you everything I know about what’s been going on after school.” Iris said.
