Night has arrived and we decide to make camp within the trees. This idea was proposed by Luna as she thought it would be best so that we don't get attacked in our sleep. It's not the first time I've done this before, it was the first month after my parents died. To avoid the zombies, I slept in trees until I found a shelter.
I climb to the top of the tree and find a comfy branch. The others do the same in various trees.
Indigo asks, “So, who’s taking the first watch?”
“I guess I will,” I say shrugging.
She nods and goes back to sleep. Looking up and admiring the stars, I silently name the constellations my parents taught me. Suddenly, my mind shifts to me and my brother. I remember us when we were little and how we would lie under the stars as he told me stories about the bright, breathtaking celestial bodies. I played with the necklace he gave me. I smile, remembering the time before the apocalypse, before the zombies invaded. I suddenly get a flashback of me when I was a little girl sitting and watching TV with my brother when the emergency siren goes off. I remember my brother rushing to pick me up and rush into the car.
“Cyrus, what's happening?” my younger self questions.
My younger self looks up at my brother, scared for my life as I hear the sirens and the screams and commotion of running people.
Cyrus looks down at me as he buckled my seatbelt and says,
“Don't worry Sage, it's going to be okay,” he says, ruffling my hair.
“Cyrus, I'm scared” I say as my parents take off in the car.
Cyrus hands me his necklace and tells me to close my eyes. I nod slightly, shaking and close my eyes. In the next moment, I feel someone shake me.
“Hey, hey,”
I open my eyes, my breathing heavy and ragged, and I see Dove standing in front of me with her usual cold expression on her face.
“You had a nightmare,” she says.
“Oh…yeah I did I guess” I say.
“Go rest, you look like you need it,” she says.
I close my eyes. After a while I give up on sleep. I sit up and look around to find that Lunar is now on patrol. I climb down from the tree and I walk towards him.
“How long have you been on patrol for?” I ask.
“An hour now,” he replies, “Why aren't you asleep?”
“I can’t so you can go to sleep. I'll keep watch” I say.
He silently nods and goes to bed. After a while, a zombie wandered too close for comfort and one of them grabbed me. I fight back and manage to kill one of them but more surround me. I scream for the others to wake up, as now I'm covered in blood and zombie goop. I continue fighting when the others come. Then I have enough time to use my bow and arrow to shoot the zombies. By the time we finish, dawn has already come upon us and we're all exhausted from the fight but we have to continue, before we run out of supplies.
