Truth Be Told

Chapter 2-Wynona

Chapter 2-Wynona

Apr 19, 2025

As she walked inside her eyes immediately darted to the boy sitting at the counter. He had dark brown hair that fell over one side of his face and baby blue eyes that seemed to light up whenever they were in the same room. She could not keep her eyes off of him. She wished she could stare at him forever. Get lost deeper and deeper into his eyes.

"Wynona!" Someone grabbed her arm and pulled her away from the table she would have run into.

Wynona jumped and turned to the girl beside her. She smiled bashfully. "My bad."'

She rolled her eyes and led her to a booth near the back of the diner. "If I had known you'd make a complete fool of yourself in front of him, I'd have waited outside."

"That's rude, June." Wynona glared at her. She glanced at the boy at the counter. "Do you think he's looking back here?"

June looked at him then back to Wynona. "I really don't care if Ferris is looking over here."

Wynona glared at her again. "I care."

"Okay, okay," She held her hands up and turned back to Ferris. "I mean he might be, but it's hard to tell what he's looking at."

"Really?" Wynona leaned over the table hoping to get a better view.

June pushed her back into her seat and stared at her baffled. "Are you dumb? That's one way to make yourself obvious." She leaned back in her seat and crossed her arms over her chest. "Can we please talk about anything else but Ferris."

Wynona rolled her eyes and turned to June. "Fine, what do you want to talk about?"

She shrugged her shoulders. "Maybe you could order some french fries for us to share? Get it in the bag, too."

"I always order, you go." Wynona glanced at the counter. "I don't want to go."

"Just go!" June waved her off. "I'll pay you back when we get home."

Wynona frowned, but reluctantly got out of her seat and walked to the counter. She was a few feet away from Ferris, but she could not bring herself to look. She knew she would make a fool of herself if she did.

The large man from the kitchen came up to Wynona and smiled warmly at her. "What can I getcha, Kid?"

Wynona opened her mouth to speak, but she was interrupted.

"Fries with extra ketchup, Marv."

Wynona felt her heart skip a beat and glanced to her side. Ferris was looking at her with a very friendly smile. Wynona slowly turned to him and smiled back awkwardly. "Thanks," She muttered and turned away.

She waited a bit before retreating back to her seat. It was too awkward to wait with Ferris very clearly staring at her. Wynona would kill to talk to Ferris, but whenever she got the chance she chickened out. She almost fell back into her seat and sighed with relief.

June looked her up and down and frowned. "Where are my fries?"

"They're…" She took a glimpse at the counter. "They're coming."

"You're such a big baby." She crossed her arms over her chest and pouted.

Wynona frowned and looked out the window. She was such a big baby. She always felt so stupid after running away from Ferris. She feared Ferris would think she was weird and then she would definitely never have a chance to talk to him.

A small ring echoed through the diner as the owner was standing at the counter holding a bag of french fries. Wynona was just about to get up when the worst thing could have happened. She watched Ferris get up instead and grab the fries. Then he started heading toward their table. Wynona's eyes widened. There was nowhere to run this time.

June noticed and stared at Ferris heading toward them. "Huh, that makes things a lot easier."

Ferris stopped at their table and smiled. "These are yours." He handed the fries to June. "June, right?"

She nodded her head and took the fries from him. "Thank you." She smiled gently and quickly turned to her fries.

Wynona wanted to say something, but she had no idea when to jump in.

Ferris glanced at her and smiled awkwardly. "Sorry, I forgot your name. Could you remind me?"

"Oh," Wynona forced a smile. "It's Wynona."

"Wynona…" Ferris looked her up and down. "You're a Junior, too?"

Wynona nodded her head. "Yeah."

Ferris turned to June. "And you're a Sophomore?"

She nodded her head, her mouth full of fries.

He chuckled and stared at her for a while longer before breaking his gaze. "Right, um, I'll see you guys around then. Bye." He waved and quickly left, joining the boy at the counter.

June shoved another fry into her mouth and turned to Wynona. "Happy? You talked to him."

Wynona glared at her. "Thanks for the support, June."

"Mhm," She looked back down at her fries. "Let's go, the bus is supposed to come in five minutes." She got up and did not even wait for Wynona.

She chased after her and by the time she caught up with her she was outside sitting on the bench. Wynona sat down beside her and turned to her. "Why are you in such a rush?"

June shrugged her shoulders. "It's easier to talk to you without distractions."

"You are just full of comments today, huh?" Wynona stole a fry from her.

June glared at her, but returned back to her fries. "Are you excited for the first day?"

Wynona shruggedhershoulders. "I guess. Are you?"

"God no," She got up as the bus pulled up in front of them. "The first day always sucks because of ice breakers."

Wynona laughed and followed her onto the bus. "That's true, but you can be friendly when you want to be."

She glanced back at her, confused. "I'm not even nice to you and you're my sister."

"True." Wynona rolled her eyes. They sat down near the back of the bus. "But you can be nice to strangers."

June stared blankly at Wynona for a while as if she had said something dumb. Her eyes darted away from her for a second and she quickly sat up. "How about you focus on loverboy over there?"

Wynona's face flushed and she turned away from her. She watched Ferris and his friend walk down the aisles, saying "hi" to different people. They kept walking down the aisle. They got closer…and closer…and even closer until they were sitting diagonally from Wynona and June, with Ferris on the aisle seat.

Ferris looked back at them and Wynona quickly looked away. "Hey."

Wynona froze and slowly turned back to Ferris. Was he talking to her?

"Wynona, right?" Ferris waved slightly. "Can I have a french fry?"

"Um," Wynona was confused for a second. Once she processed the question she turned to June and snatched the bag from her. She complained but she ignored her. "Here." She held the bag out to him.

Ferris smiled and took a couple fries. "Thanks. Tell June I said thank you, too."

Wynona slowly nodded her head and turned back to June. "Maybe today is going to be a good day."

"Because he asked for a fry?" June snatched the bag back. "You're delusional."

"I like to say hopeful." Wynona nudged her playfully.

June chuckled and shook her head. "My sister’s crazy."

Wynona laughed at her and leaned back in her seat. Although she wanted to be hopeful, she knew she was probably just delusional. But it was nice to dream.
