Once they had gotten off the bus, Ferris and Cole made their first stop at the office to pick up their new schedules. Ferris was still trying to convince Cole to help him out, but the amount of doubt his friend had was starting to rub off on him. Maybe it was a bad thing and maybe Ferris needed to man-up and talk to her himself.
That was how he felt until Cole said, "Fine! I'll help you. As long as you keep being her friend afterwards."
All his doubts disappeared and a large grin grew on Ferris' face. "Yeah! Of course!" He was relieved to finally have his friend on his side. Cole was always better at making new friends than Ferris. With Cole's help, it would not take long for Wynona to become his friend.
They started toward their first classes which were in the same building but on a different floor. Ferris had had his first period teacher last year so he was in no rush to be on time. He walked with Cole to his first class and to his surprise Wynona was standing outside a door on her phone.
Ferris quickly nudged Cole and motioned toward Wynona.
"Yeah, yeah…" Cole rolled his eyes and within seconds a grin was plastered on his face. He waved toward Wynona and called "Hey!"
Wynona's head shot up and for a moment she looked like a deer in headlights. It almost made Ferris laugh. Wynona slowly waved back, the confusion clear on her face.
Cole kept going. "This your first class?"
Wynona nodded her head, hereyes darting between Ferris and Cole. "Why? Do you guys have this class, too?"
Cole shook his head. "Nah, I'm further down the hall. I have…" He looked down at the paper in his hand. "I have U.S. History right now."
"Oh," Wynona slowly turned to Ferris. "And you?"
"I'm downstairs. I have English." Ferris smiled awkwardly.
Wynona nodded her head. "Cool."
There was a long uncomfortable silence. Wynona was looking everywhere else but at them. Ferris glanced around and saw Cole completely oblivious to awkwardness. Ferris nudged Cole and motioned his head toward Wynona. He mouthed the words, "Do something."
Cole held up his hands and rolled his eyes. "What's your schedule look like?"
Wynona focused on them again and handed them her schedule. They both looked at it, comparing their schedules. Ferris could tell Cole could have cared less, but this was important to Ferris. Any class together was one step closer to completing his plan.
"Hey," Ferris pointed at the schedule. "We have a few classes together."
"Really?" Wynona sounded excited for a moment and leaned over Ferris' shoulder.
Ferris nodded his head. "History, Spanish, and Chemistry."
"Oh," A small smile grew on her face. "That's awesome." The five-minute-bell rang and the door beside Wynona opened. "I've gotta go." She smiled bashfully. "See you next period." She quickly walked into the class, the door closing behind her.
Cole sighed with relief and shoved his hands into his pocket. "Are you happy now? Do I still need to help you?"
Ferris rolled his eyes and walked with Cole down the hall to his class. "Yes. Just until I have a good foundation with her."
"Dude, that's going to take forever. You suck at making friends." Cole stopped at a door and walked inside.
Ferris glared at him as the door closed. He groaned and walked away to his class. Maybe he did suck at making friends, but he was going to go through with this plan. This was his chance to win over June and he was going to do whatever it took to make it happen.
In their next class, Ferris had a hard time going up to Wynona. The most he could manage was sitting next to her, but that did not last long as they were given assigned seats. Wynona was only a row ahead of Ferris, but it was still going to make it difficult to talk to her. Aside from asking basic questions like what time it was or if she liked the teacher, Ferris had nothing else to say. It did not help that Wynona seemed to be avoiding him.
He tried to come up with anything to say, but by the time he had an idea the class was over and Wynona was gone. Ferris knew they had another class together after their third period. When he was supposed to pay attention he was actually thinking about what he was going to say.
When the bell rang and third period ended, Ferris practically ran to his fourth period. The class was in another building, but he was still able to get there first. He waited by the door breathless from his run.
He stood up straight when he saw Wynona coming down the hall. Ferris waved and called, "Hey!"
Wynona had that same look on her face when they said "hi" to her earlier that morning. She waved slightly. "Hi?"
Ferris walked up to her and smiled. "How was your last class?"
"It was okay, just English." Wynona looked down at the floor.
"Oh," Ferris smiled awkwardly. "Cool. I had History."'
Wynona nodded her head. "Cool."
"Cool…" Ferris looked around for anything to say.
"Um, I'm surprised you're taking a third year of Spanish." Wynona looked at him.
Ferris was caught off guard for a moment. "Oh, my grandmother wanted me to take it. She thinks knowing another language would come handy later on. What about you?"
"My family speaks Spanish and I'm no good at it so I'm taking this class to help." Wynona chuckled.
"At least they're not making you, right?" Ferris shrugged his shoulders.
Wynona nodded her head. "True." As she spoke the door opened. "We should head in."
Ferris glanced back at the door. "Oh! Yeah, sure." He turned and entered the class with Wynona behind him.
"Where are you going to sit?" Wynona asked.
Ferris looked around the class. "Um, probably over there." He pointed at the side of the class.
"Cool, I'll um follow you." Wynona smiled.
Ferris was surprised but he nodded his head and walked to the seat he pointed to. Wynona sat down beside him, but neither of them had said anything after that. Ferris tried to think of what to say, but everytime he looked at Wynona she was either looking at her phone, talking to someone who walked in, or rummaging through her bag. He sighed with frustration and laid his head down on the table.
"What's with you?"
Ferris sat up and saw Cole looking down at him. He had forgotten they had a class together. Ferris motioned his head toward Wynona and frowned.
Cole nodded his head and sat down behind Ferris. "Just talk to her another time. Honestly, it looks like you're trying too hard."
Ferris laid his head back down on the table ignoring Cole's comment. The class started shortly after and Ferris did his best to pay attention. But he kept trying to think of things to say to Wynona. So far, his plan was getting him nowhere. Maybe Cole was right and he was pushing it, but he was not going to admit that. He just needed to keep trying and everything would fall into place. Before the end of the semester he and June would be more than just strangers.
