The spoon scraped the disposable plate. The two sat at a table alone and across from each other, but neither was willing to spark conversation.
“Hey, Your juice, give it to me” Mia perks up a bit and grabs it.
“Oh… s-sure… I wasn’t planning on drinking it anyway-” The girl quickly smacked it from Mia’s hands without remorse. The juice inside spilling across the floor.
“Seriously? You really just sat there and let me do that? Are you always this useless?” The heat inside him churned like something waiting to break free. The words of his father fluttered through his mind. ‘Fear is a determining factor that chooses whether someone is weak or strong, don’t let yourself be the weak one’ His eyes wide as he faintly stretched his hand toward the now empty juice box on the floor. Tears filled his eyes.
“So you’re still a crybaby, even when we’re 1st graders!?” Mia looked down as a silence filled the cafeteria. A few teachers watched from the side.
“Say something, brat!” She grabbed Mia by the shoulder and shoved him from the chair. Rue jumping a bit. ‘Why didn’t Kat stop her?’ Mia hits the floor and turns to look up at Chloe. Her face was fuming.
“I’m better than everyone here, my Ability to turn my skin into any rock I want makes me a hundred times better, and you offer me apple juice!? Everyone knows I prefer orange!” Mia gulped as Rue clenched his teeth, his hand beginning to glow. ‘You’re the one who asked him for it!’ Mia starts faintly quivering as a teacher exhales and walks over.
“That’s enough you too-” Mia’s heart suddenly raced in an extreme warmth, his mind drifting back to the weird dream from earlier today. Seeing the white haired villain from his dream in Chloe’s actions. A fear of death suddenly fills him from head to toe as Chloe reaches down to grab mia.
“N-No…” Chloe clenches her fist. Mia tightly closes his eyes as a blue flame faintly sparks off his slightly floating air.
“NO!!” For a split second, the world felt wrong. Too still. Too quiet. Then—BOOM. Chloe’s eyes widened. ‘What the-’ She’s slammed backwards. Hitting a lunch table full of other students. The floor around Mia shatters as a massive shockwave erupted out from him. All the tables sliding back against the wall with the students still on them or falling off. Screams filled the cafeteria from the other kids as one teacher stumbled back, nearly tripping over a chair.
“What just—” Another grabbed her arm.
“Calm down! Get the principal! Now!” The first teacher nodded and rushed into the middle of the room, to Mia’s side, who was sitting on the floor, on his knees, his eyes blank. ‘H-He’s out cold… did he awaken a latent ability??’ He looked over at Chloe who had helped herself up, but her eyes were wide and her teeth gritted in anger. Rue slowly stepped back with wide eyes. ‘Did… Kat actually has an ability he wasn’t aware of??... then…’ Rue looks down at his hand as it glows slightly.
“He’s just like me…”
Mia sat in the cushioned chair, looking anywhere but the principal and his dad, mainly looking at his twirling fingers. Mia momentarily glanced up at his dad who sat beside him, arms resting on his lap. His hot pain hair was undercut and straight, he wore a trimmed beard and a battle scar on his left cheek. Aisuru glanced at Mia, who avoided his gaze, before turning his attention back to the principal. His face was hard to read, but the slight tension in his shoulders gave away a hint of concern.
“Is there… something wrong, Mr. Cowlin?” Mr. Cowlin lightly covered his mouth with his thumb and pointer.
“I wouldn’t say it’s a bad thing, but I wouldn’t be strong enough to suggest it’s good either, Mr. Ikati” Mia’s dad raises an eyebrow.
“What are you suggesting then? I doubt Mia got into trouble, he’s too shy to stand up for himself, we’ve been working on that though… y’know, self defense and what-not-” Mr. Cowlin sighed, interrupting Mia’s dad.
“Look, I'll make this as easy as possible, since I know you trusted us with your son…” He paused for a moment “it seems Mia is an Awakened” Mr. Cowlin said, his voice steady but with an edge of uncertainty.
“It’s... not something we expected here, but it seems it was triggered today.” Mia’s dad paused for a moment, leaning back in the chair before leaning forward again.
“Right… is everyone okay at least?” Mr. Cowlin nods confidently.
“Luckily there were only minor bruises and scrapes… most of the damage was to the tables and the tiles that were shattered” Mia’s dad exhales. ‘Shattered? I was hoping Mia would’ve been born without an ability, nonetheless, not one that can cause that much damage as soon as it’s awakened…’ He looks up at Mr. Cowlin.
“Okay then… Well, I'll save you the effort and bring Mia home early, so hopefully something else won’t happen… Me and Mia can sort the rest out at home.” Mr. Cowlin nodded.
“That would probably be best, Mr. Ikati, have a good evening then”
“You too.”
