Chapter 18: The First Day
Kai S. Gao waited in the armored car for so long that he even thought that Xia Lin hadn't even programmed him with a countdown to unlock the shackles, but rather an infinite amount of time so that he could watch his hopes dwindle in the midst of them.
Fortunately, the electronic shackles eventually came off, and he met a strange man.
“What is the relationship between the man in your car and you?”
Lin Feng didn't answer.
“Where are you going?”
Lin Feng didn't answer either.
Then there was a roar from the engine and the pickup truck left in a puff of smoke.
For some reason, Kai S. Gao had the feeling that this man was one of a kind, or at least had the same look in his eyes, but it was hard to put into words, like the kind of thinness that could throw everything away.
He quickly ran to the driver's seat, and found the key still inserted in the car, he immediately sat on it, started the vehicle, and chased towards the pickup truck.
Lin Feng didn't notice that there was a tail behind him, and went straight to Maeve Chen's house.
Even though they had only left a short time ago, everything had changed, and even the traces of their time here hadn't dissipated yet.
Lin Feng rummaged through his farming tools and started digging a hole in the open space behind his house. The dirt floor had long been compacted, so digging wasn't easy, and he didn't stop until his hands were worn through and blotting with blood.
Kai S. Gao parked his car at a distance and watched quietly.
Only after Lin Feng had finished cultivating the soil did Kai S. Gao, an uninvited guest, rush over to him and say, “I thought you were going to dig one more and then lie down in it yourself.”
Lin Feng gripped the shovel in his hand tightly and took a few steps back with a wary look on his face, if the other party had any ill intentions, he would definitely be no match for the large man in front of him.
“Why are you following me?”
Kai S. Gao held up his glasses, “Before, I didn't know where to go and what to do next, because I have no attachment to this world anymore, however, seeing you bury your important people with your own hands, I suddenly had an interesting idea, I want to see with my own eyes what the world will become like, and where humanity in the post-apocalyptic world will be heading. ”
He couldn't help but let out a longing smile, “Count it as a new scientific study! And you, of all people, are my chosen object of observation.”
“You're a scientist?”
“Microbiologist.”
Lin Feng froze slightly, “But microbiologists who want to live also need a place of refuge, they also need food and drinking water, and right now, there is only one way to obtain these, robbery.”
The last word was particularly heavy.
“Not to mention you're a criminal.”
Kai S. Gao subconsciously showed a kind smile, “I'm not the kind of person you think I am, but I can't explain it, however, I have a way to gain your trust.”
As he spoke, Kai S. Gao pulled out a dark iron lump from the pocket of his suit pants and threw it on the mound of dirt in front of Lin Feng.
It was clearly a pistol.
Although Lin Feng did not know much about firearms, he could occasionally brush up on some of the relevant content, and what was on the ground was a QSZ11 pistol, which was not a police firearm, but a small pistol exclusively assigned for use by military officers or special mission personnel, and utilized 5.8mm pistol rounds.
Seeing that Lin Feng did not bend down to pick it up, but instead looked at himself more warily, Kai S. Gao's eyebrows trembled a little as he explained, “That person who was responsible for escorting me carelessly left this gun in the car, even a box of bullets, as well as the instruction manual.”
Then he added, “Don't worry about taking it, you will use it in the future, you should be clear about what kind of world it will be in the future.”
Lin Feng certainly knew how beneficial it was to have a firearm in the post-apocalyptic world.
“Why are you doing this?”
“As I said, I don't have any attachment to this world, I can give up anything, so just think of it as me finding myself a reason to live.” Kai S. Gao smiled mockingly, “Besides, in the midst of the post-apocalyptic world, if you want to live, you still need to have a caretaker, I might be able to help.”
Lin Feng pondered over something, while leaning down and picking up the pistol, after briefly fiddling with it, he turned on the safety, and fired a shot towards the open field in the distance.
“With a poof, Lin Feng realized that the gun had very little recoil, and even his less powerful left hand was able to grasp it.
ain, especially under the circumstances.”
Under a disaster, there was bound to be a large number of abandoned cars, just picking them up on the side of the road was the right thing to do, Lin Feng began to keep an eye on the side of the road, trying to find some abandoned vehicles.
After all, collapsed houses, rusted vehicles crashed on the side of the road, and corpses scattered everywhere were what most people imagined of the end times.
But today, after all, was only the first day of the end of the world, and it was not yet time to present such a deserted scene. In other words, people still had a few more days to realize that it was already the End Times, as well as to have an epiphany about the laws of survival in the End Times.
This would also determine who would survive and who would die.
Soon, the car drove to the urban and rural areas, the buildings became dense, but it had long been a blood red color, a lot of houses had collapsed, and those that hadn't collapsed yet were also in a precarious position, rubble piled up on the already narrow road, the car needed to twist from side to side to just barely pass through.
The ground was covered with crimson water, and it was not clear whether it was due to sticky bacteria or human blood mixed in.
Some of the houses that hadn't yet collapsed were empty, and panicked crowds had gathered on the side of the road, holding umbrellas or standing in the rain.
Men were digging through the rubble bare-chested, trying to save their loved ones; women were dressed in revealing clothes, supposedly rushing out of the bathroom after casually pulling on a dress in the heat of the moment; five- and six-year-old children sat paralyzed on the ground crying, with no one there to soothe them; and an old woman stood guard over her partner's body, not shedding any tears, but rambling on about something.
Some people saw the police car passing by and frantically tapped on the window, trying to go and seek help from the people's police.
“Comrade police! Comrade policeman! Please save my husband and child, they're still in the rubble...”
“Comrade police, when will there be rescue! When will the state send someone!”
...
Unbeknownst to Kai S. Gao, everything that was happening in front of him was causing him immense torment, and he was clenching his teeth so tightly that blood was almost blotting out from the corners of his mouth.
He gripped the steering wheel so tightly that even his body trembled, a knife called “conscience” was cutting his flesh and heart.
He muttered a few words with a twisted face, “Being exiled to the end of the world is really a very cruel punishment...”
At this moment, Lin Feng's voice rang out over the intercom, “Kai S. Gao, don't stop, if you stop, you won't be able to leave.”
Kai S. Gao tried to calm himself and squeezed out a word between his teeth, “Okay.”
Then he gave the gas pedal a heavy blast, just not in gear, but loud enough to scare off the people surrounding the car.
Just as the crowd was stunned, the armored car kicked on the gas and accelerated away.
A long way later, looking through the rearview mirror, the men remained mute in place.
