Chapter 19: Entering the City
After leaving the town, there was a wide development area, where factories and high-rise buildings had collapsed, Lin Feng couldn't help but worry about the traffic situation in the city.
Soon, the pickup truck was blocked by a huge debris.
If the collapsed houses didn't give Lin Feng much of an impact, the sight of a 100-meter-high building falling down and stretching out in front of him could be described as shocking.
It was like a giant's corpse exposed to the wild, and after the slime mold killed it, it began to dismember and eat everything left behind.
The slime mold had even burrowed into the interior of the building, staining it a dark red color.
Around them, one could see a large amount of glass slag, fragments of exterior walls, concrete blocks, and various personal items scattered about.
And even people who had been dropped into the ground.
Red slime molds sprouted fluffy substrates on the corpses, making it so that Lin Feng did not see the gory images.
Who would have thought that the human instinct to love furry things and the fear of corpses could be manifested in the same thing.
Lin Feng stepped out of the car, his shoes stepped on the broken glass, making a creaking sound, he bent down to pick up a doll for children to play with, his eyes staring blankly for a while.
He stared blankly for a while until the roar of the engine behind him woke him up.
Kai S. Gao got out of the car and walked over, speaking in a low tone, “It looks like we can only take a detour.”
Lin Feng gently placed the doll back on the ground and turned his head to look at Kai S. Gao with a puzzled look on his face, “You don't seem to be in the right state?”
“It's fine.” Kai S. Gao took off his glasses and reached out his right hand to cover his eyes and started massaging them.
“Are you blaming yourself for not getting off the bus to help them just now?” Lin Feng casually guessed.
At that, Kai S. Gao's movements lagged.
“At this time, no one can help them.” Lin Feng consoled, “Besides, it's not your fault.”
A smile followed, “Now I barely believe you're a good person.”
Kai S. Gao's frown deepened, a look of gravity surfacing on his face as he blandly said, “Thank you...”
Lin Feng then turned around and crossed his arms as he looked at the ruins in front of him, “I hope the outer ring road is still passable, let's go.”
After the two of them got into their cars separately, Lin Feng killed the steering wheel and turned to the right towards the city park.
With the road blocked, the only way to get past the park was to go through it, luckily both cars had pretty good obstacle-crossing abilities, and successfully penetrated the outer ring road.
The only thing to be thankful for was that there weren't any tall buildings around the outer ring road, and the traffic was still fairly smooth, even some vehicles could be seen fleeing the city.
The outer ring elevated was also still solid, the asphalt on the road protecting the main structure of the viaduct.
Not to mention that the construction quality of this kind of transportation facility is incomparable to that of an unusual commercial house, and ridiculously, the old buildings are stronger than the newly renovated houses.
The view from the viaduct is very wide, Lin Feng can't help but look to the left, which is a blood-reddish ruin, with countless human lives buried under piles and piles of rubble, just like a huge graveyard.
For human beings, death is always the most shocking thing, but when death has become the norm, there is nothing left but numbness.
After an hour and a half of traveling on the outer ring, Lin Feng picked up the intercom and paged over, “Turn left, we're almost there.”
“Northspire Haven, direction of Bridge No. 3?”
“My house is right across the bridge.”
“That's not a good way to go next.”
As Kai S. Gao had said, they would have to go through the city, and it was hard to tell if they would make it through; if they couldn't make it back, they would have to find a way to scavenge for supplies in the city, but it wouldn't be any easier.
It just so happens that the direction they are traveling is the most densely populated business district, which is also likely to be the hardest hit.
The closer they got to the city, the more muddy the rain seemed to get, and the windshield was covered in a light blood-red color, so they had to turn on the windshield wipers in order to see what was in front of them.
As Lin Feng looked on from afar, a large number of buildings had collapsed, like collapsed building blocks that would not be completely shattered into pieces in an instant, and some of them were still able to maintain their original shapes.
But without exception, the debris was covered with slimy clumps of sticky fungal protoplasm, some of which were still dripping down.
ng rocks, and some of them had people in them, who directly perished on the spot.
Corpses were also appearing one after another on the roadside, but they just didn't see a single living person, and they probably didn't dare to continue staying here.
The duo scavenged for useful things along the way, and soon collected enough electric batteries.
Lin Feng's idea was such that the lead compounds in the lead-acid batteries could be extracted and mixed inside the waterproof paint before applying it to the surface of the house.
And the paint needed to be red to get some camouflage effect.
According to Kai S. Gao, it only takes more than one percent concentration of lead compounds to effectively stop slime molds, so only ten batteries were picked up - after all, batteries are not lightweight things.
It also included a redundant amount of red paint for the two cars.
Half an hour later, the two cars entered the CBD, and it was already getting a little dusky.
Looking all the way through, the wide road in the center wasn't covered in debris, but there seemed to be some obstacles that Lin Feng couldn't see.
On both sides of the street there are two office buildings toward the direction of the opposite fell down, actually supporting each other, built a “into” word.
These two buildings are mysteriously standing on the road above, and from time to time also fall down the concrete blocks and the items in the building.
“The only way to get through is to speed up.”
Kai S. Gao suggested, “Why don't you come in the armored car, it's sturdier.”
“No, both cars are needed.”
Neither of them had much to say because of their nervousness.
“Then I'll take the front and clear the way for you.”
The two cars switched formations and headed that way as fast as they could.
Only when they reached the bottom of the two office buildings did Lin Feng see clearly what the obstacles piled up on the road were; they were a pile of fragmented corpses, and it was possible to clearly identify which part of the body belonged to which part of the body.
Mixed in with them were all sorts of miscellaneous items, such as pieces of desks, computers, chairs, and the like.
When the office building was dumped, these people fell from dozens or hundreds of meters in the air, directly slapping into a pile of mush on the ground, and together with the other broken pieces, they piled up into a mountain of corpses that was nearly half a meter high and more than twenty meters wide, and even more than fifty meters in length.
The blood had long since spread throughout the entire street, and at first Lin Feng thought that the slime on the ground was slime fungus.
The scene in front of him was obviously Lin Feng's greatest fear, but now he saw these, even without the slightest fluctuation in his heart, as if he was also a puddle of corpses.
He even rolled down the window of the car to get used to the smell of blood, but under the effect of the sticky bacteria, the air was actually extraordinarily fresh, and even a bit sweet...
“Lin Feng, it looks like we can only go around by taking East Main Street...” Kai S. Gao's voice was a little shaky coming from the intercom, he had already taken off his glasses and didn't dare to take a closer look at the pile of bloody stuff in front of him.
It was only after a moment that Lin Feng picked up the intercom, his voice slightly cold as he called back, “It's going to be dark, just drive straight through, the top of this pile is still fairly flat.”
“But...”
Without waiting for Kai S. Gao to finish his words, the pickup truck's six-cylinder engine let out a roar, and the front wheels slowly climbed up the pile of corpses, and because of the skidding, the wheels spun rapidly, curling up and splattering away minced meat and blood, quickly coloring the vehicle a blood-red color.
Finally, the flesh underneath the wheels was worn away until white bones were seen, and only then did the slipping of the wheels stop and the pickup truck slowly climbed up.
