Chapter 20: Organization
The pickup truck drove a real bloody road over the pile of corpses, the surface almost worn away to reveal tired white bones, remnants of skin and guts filling it.
Kai S. Gao wondered how Lin Feng managed to drive the car onto the pile of corpses without hesitation, I'm afraid that anyone else would have hesitated, it's an instinct engraved in the DNA, or the so-called human nature.
At this moment, a low rumble suddenly came from above, the already shaky building was now beginning to shift again, and under the erosion of the slime fungus, this stability could not be maintained for long.
Some of the concrete blocks began to fall off, whirring and collapsing downward in a series of pieces.
Kai S. Gao hesitates, but hooks up the four-wheel drive and speeds across the pile of bodies, following the path left by the pickup truck.
Suddenly there was another scream from above, followed by a muffled thud as another person fell from the building.
Neither of them saw exactly what happened, but based on the sound alone, they could imagine everything, and even feel the wave of despair.
After driving away from this neighborhood in silence, the sky had already darkened, and an open field could be seen ahead, the recently opened Northspire Haven City Park, and from afar, it seemed that a dense crowd of people could be seen.
The road ahead was completely blocked by numerous vehicles, these survivors seemed to be using the main road as a parking lot.
There were even some cars that were seeing eye to eye and were blocking the gaps.
Lin Feng had no choice but to turn in the direction of the park, but unluckily, the only access road was blocked by various items, and a group of people were organizing and carrying them.
Under the flashing headlights, it could be seen that there were also people in police uniforms among them, directing and maintaining order.
Lin Feng observed for a while and roughly figured out the situation.
When public facilities such as parks are planned, their role as human defense fortifications is also considered, and there should be an emergency shelter underneath the city park.
But it certainly couldn't be compared to the carefully constructed doomsday fortress at Riverwatch Peak, and it was hard to say how long it would survive.
“This is the resilience of civilization, someone is starting to organize self-rescue.” Over the intercom, Lin Feng's tone was somewhat playful.
“It looks like the police organized and set up this shelter.” Kai S. Gao's tone was slightly hesitant, “Lin Feng, haven't you thought about simply staying in this place? Of course, I'm just saying it off the top of my head.”
“How big do you think this refuge can be? How many people can be sustained for production? And how bad would the living environment inside be?” Lin Feng threw out a series of questions.
Kai S. Gao thought about it and found Lin Feng's remark very reasonable, “Rather, I don't need to think about it to know that it might be okay in the short term, but if time passes, I'm afraid that the conditions inside won't be much better than the concentration camps, especially in the future when there's a shortage of food, and it's unimaginable to imagine what will happen when so many people gather together.”
“Find a way to get over there.” Saying that, Lin Feng wanted to go and tap the horn, but when he saw that a police officer had noticed this side and was coming over, he stopped.
The visitor was a man in his thirties, tall and thin, clad in a transparent raincoat, and it was only when he got closer that he could see that he was in fact a traffic police officer, who first sized up the armored car behind him.
The blood red color of the two vehicles didn't catch his attention though, not surprising in a world full of red.
It was only then that he stood up to the window of the pickup truck, and even gave the customary salute before asking, “Hello comrade, are you also police?”
Lin Feng thought for a moment, neither he nor Kai S. Gao looked like police officers from their temperament, so if he forced himself to impersonate them, he was afraid that he would easily reveal his identity, so he simply told the truth, “Oh no, the armored car in the back was abandoned, and since we saw that it was still useful, we drove him on.”
The traffic cop nodded thoughtfully and turned to ask, “You guys are also here for shelter, right? There's not enough underground space, the car can only be parked outside on the road, not in the park.”
“Comrade policeman, we're just passing through.” Lin Feng frowned slightly and squeezed out a dry smile.
“Passing by? Going somewhere? The whole city of Northspire Haven is like this now, there's nowhere else to go.” The traffic cop said as his eyes darted elsewhere.
llected supplies.
It had to be said that everything was very organized, at least basic order could be ensured, the organizers of this place were still very capable.
However, some government credibility had definitely been utilized.
The air was scorching hot and dry due to the fires burning on both sides of the underground passageway, which somewhat insulated the vapor from spreading downwards.
By the light of the fire, the duo slowly walked towards the underground parking lot, and from the signage on the wall, they could tell that there were a total of two underground levels, adding up to roughly eight thousand square meters.
The numbers sounded like a lot, but it was actually just a bit bigger than a standard soccer field.
And there didn't seem to be a lot of people here, just in this passageway alone, there were dozens of people coming and going.
Walking up to the railing of the entry/exit parking lot, Lin Feng saw a not-so-bright led light lit in front of him, the kind powered by a rechargeable battery.
A young woman in a police uniform stood behind a table, notebook and neutral pen in hand, registering a mother and child.
A simple number plate was issued at the end, which was actually a number written on a playing card with a red marker.
“726...”
At this time, the policewoman noticed the two people over here and waved her hand with a smile, “Newcomers, right, come over here and register.”
In today's situation, such a smile was not easy to see.
Lin Feng and Kai S. Gao looked at each other in disbelief before walking over anyway.
