Briars Hollow

Briars Hollow and the Archive Part 9

Briars Hollow and the Archive Part 9

May 05, 2025

By the time that I am jolted away from my research, by Doris knocking on the door, the sun has set and I have already read through one and a half of the books. It is with the sudden jolt at the knock that I groan. Apparently having sat crouched over the desk for hours. I have a notebook beside me with several pages of notes, and sticky notes sticking out of the two books I've been reading. There is ink smeared on my hand, and I have little doubt there is some on my face.

After blinking a few times my eyes clear up so that I can see farther in front of me. I look up at Doris, who has a little smile on her face.

"The library will be closed in a few minutes," Doris says, "You can take your books with you or leave them here if you wish."

I blink and look down at the work in front of me. Thoughts race through my mind, knowing that I'll be spending the night with the girls. Knowing my friends as soon as they see that I'm researching something they'll try and figure out what it is that I am doing. And as much as I love Rosemarie… the girl is nosy and will try and help. When this what ever it is with me and Devlin, our connection or not, is not something that she needs to get involved with. With a sigh I start cleaning up the desk and straightening things.

"The supplies for the ritual to double check that you have been chosen should be here by Wednesday at the latest." Doris says, still standing in the doorway.

She is looking at the books with a look of curiosity but doesn't make any moves to learn more.

I nod and continue packing stuff up.

"That is good to hear. Do we need to wait for a special time or event to perform the ritual?" I ask, as I am closing my bag.

Doloris appears beside her, and answers, "No, we can perform it as soon as we have the required components."

"Good," I say, "I believe soon I'll have someone joining me. To look over something here at the archive. They'll be bringing some ritual components and information. Will they be allowed to come back here?"

The sisters tilt their heads to the side, turn and look at each other. After a few moments, it is clear to me that they are communicating in some way with each other.

Suddenly they both nod.

"Depending on the person, you may bring them back here to this office, or we can set you up in the study room in the front Archive area." Deloris says.

"If you come back here, you will have to be with them the entire time, if they leave this room." Doris finishes for her sister.

Nodding I smile at them and fling my bag strap over my shoulder, and head out of the office area.

I thank both of the sisters, before leaving the archive. They are locking the door behind me, but I notice they are still standing there watching until I am safely in my car, with the car started.

It only takes a few minutes for me to pull into the driveway, of the Yarwood house.

I'm laying on the couch with a full stomach and thinking over the last 24 hours.

When I had walked into the house, Mr. Yarwood had quickly deposited a plate full of food on the table and made me sit down and eat. While Mrs. Yarwood, had Lillith and Rosemarie take my bags and help her. The three of them arranging the couch so that it was ready for me to sleep. Meanwhile Mr. Yarwood was making sure I had enough food and was asking me if I want ice cream or cookies, as he'd made a few batches for the bake sale and had extra. Apparently the little adventurers group was raising money for new supplies. The youngest Yarwood, James, was six and in his first year of joining 'Little Adventurers".

They'd sort of always been like that, but I have a sneaking suspicion that the girls told some of what was going on to their parents. Probably not everything, but enough that they'd make sure to know that I'm is cared for. Which I've never doubted when I've been in this house. Which is ironic because in the house I was raised I have questioned if I am loved, but here is the home of two of my best friends. I have never questioned if I am loved.

But since I died and was brought back, that questioning feeling about my own family is much stronger. Made that much stronger by how how uncle hadn't even hesitated, at least from what I'd seen. I know it hasn't technically happened, in this time line. The fact that it happened in the other timeline and brought me here, is what pisses me off. Because yeah, I'm not quite sad or upset, maybe a little upset. What I am is pissed off. Which if there is anything to be pissed off about, it is someone killing me, or not doing anything to stop me dying like locking my powers.

I shake my head and roll onto my side, looking out the living room window.

Sleep, I need to sleep, can't change the past. Okay can't change it more than I already am.

Through the window I can see fireflies, but I can also see some fairy lights. While the fireflies are more of a yellow light, the fairy's have a variety of lights or actually glows. They are glowing.

One Fairy, two fairy…
