Briars Hollow

Briars Hollow and the Archive Part 10

Briars Hollow and the Archive Part 10

May 05, 2025

"Mo...Mo..." is whispered into my ear, and along with it I feel a tiny hand pat me on my head.

I groan and blink my eyes, trying to clear some of the sleep from them. Looking to my side I see James sitting beside the couch. As soon as the boy noticed I'm waking up a grin spreads across his face, showing off his several missing front teeth. Which explains why he isn't saying my full name.

"Jamie, what time is it?" I whisper to him.

I turn on my side to get a better look at him, still blinking sleep from my eyes.

James holds up one hand showing five fingers and then his other hand raises showing two more fingers.

I yawn before speaking, voice still whispering, "Its seven? Why are you up so early?"

James giggles a little. "Bake sale is today!"

Moving slowly, I stretch my body out and then sit up, nodding my head at the six-year-old. Sitting up I'm able to see that Mr. Yarwood is puttering around the kitchen, tiptoeing and getting everything together for the bake sale.

"Why don't you go help your dad? I'm going to try and get a shower before Lillith wakes and uses all the hot water." I whisper, making a face.

James giggles and nods, jumping up from the floor and running to help his father.

I smile between my yawns, grabbing some clothes and toiletries before heading to take a quick shower.

The bathroom is small but not cramped, as only Lillith and Rosemarie share this one. It sits between their bedrooms. The hot water helps wake me up the rest of the way, the scent of the citrus soap fills the air. The soap that they keep on hand for me when I spend the night. Neither Lillith nor Rosemarie use citrus soaps, they prefer floral scents. They also make most of their own at The Summoning Scroll, as well as like ninety percent of the tea they drink.

Once out of the shower, I make quick work to dry off and get dressed. Making sure to go through my dental routine, and then brush my hair. The twins don't have a hair dryer, they use magic to dry their hair. And to tame Rosemarie's hair. Her wild hair requires taming; I wouldn't be surprised if it proves sentient.

Maybe one of them can teach me how to dry my hair with magic? Though it sounds simple to do, I have a sinking feeling, it isn't actually that easy to do.

"Put the necklace on," Death's voice says into my ear.

I jump and barely hold in the shriek I want to let out in surprise, doesn't stop me from stumbling backwards into the wall though. Because standing beside me in all of their pastel glory is Death.

It takes several seconds for me to settle my breathing and my heart rate. The entire time, Death is standing there with a smile on their face, like I amuse them.

"How? Why? What?" I stutter out once I'm able to speak, my hand is gripping my chest.

Death tilts their head before saying, "The necklace that was with the journal, wear it."

I blink a few times in confusion, "Wait, I thought it was a charm on the journal?"

Death tilts their head the other way, eyes glazing over for a second before they come back into focus. "I knew I forgot something!"

Death waves their hand and then I feel a lightweight settle against my chest. Glancing down, there is now a delicate chain around my neck and dangling from it are two charms; one is a raven and the other a little chibi skull. Both charms are a delicate silver, though the Raven has tiny black stones for its eyes, and the Skull small diamonds.

"You seemed more like a silver than a gold person," Death says, fiddling with their own golden necklace.

From the quick glance I get of the necklace, Death has several charms, but I can't quite make out what they are.

"Thank you," I say, glancing back down at the charms.

"You are my blessed, and a chosen of mine. That little ritual at the Archive means little, with that around your neck." Death smiles, "Only you may take it off, and if you take it off no one can touch it. It will be as if they go right through it, well, you and your soulmate."

I look at the necklace charms and then back up at Death, smiling at them. Nodding.

"Thank you," I say, "Question, how are you here? I didn't die in the shower, did I?"

My eyes dart to take a quick glance at the shower. It would really suck to have died in the shower of all embarrassing places.

Death giggles a little, shaking their head.

"No, you're not dead. That would be an awful place to die, and yet so many of my reapers collect people there." Death says, "I can make myself known. It would really stink if I could only chat with people when they die. Though I must be careful, or I end up with fanatics and cults trying to find me."

Guessing from the tone of voice, she isn't too pleased with some cults and groups that follow the entity Death. Which fair, one of the few semi good ones is the "Temple of the Raven" which actually worships both entities of Life and Death.

"Were you here..." I start to ask but stop myself.

"When you were in the shower? No." Death states before continuing, "I was outside the door, as I arrived when you woke up."

"Um...Death that sounds a little creepy. " I say, whispering in the end.

Death blinks at me a few times, and tilts their head.

"Creepy?" Death asks, a slight lilt of confusion.

I nod, "Yes, appearing as soon as I wake up is considered a little creepy."

"Fleshy ones are so strange, I'll have to talk to Life about this!" Death says, just before they disappear.
