On the bed, Ingrid's fingers twitch as her body awakens anew. Behind her still closed eyelids, her eyes shift.
Suddenly she jerks up, eyes flying open. Glancing around rapidly darting brown eyes. Her chest rises and falls quickly, newly revived, heart racing.
"Shoosh, it's okay," Dynah whispers.
Ingrid gasps as arms gently wrap around her, a hand caressing her head, moving hair from her eyes.
"I...I..." Ingrid stutters, as tears start to fall from her eyes.
Memories of the night before flashing through her mind. She remembers finishing up her last exam and she wanted to celebrate. She went out for tacos. There had been a food truck a couple of blocks from her apartment. Taco's...She'd gone out for tacos and then the memories get a little blurry.
"What happened?" Ingrid whispers threw her tears.
"I'm so sorry," Dynah says, "You called to me, and I felt the pull to turn you...I couldn't let you die."
"Die..." Ingrid whispers, as memories flash in her mind.
The taco truck, and a man talking to her. Then she was at a party. She wasn't even sure how she had ended up at the party, just that she had. Then the pain as her neck was torn into, a scream of pain and begging for help. She did have memory of the slightest glimpse as Dynah locked eyes onto her before she went unconscious.
"I...I went out for tacos, and the man and the party." Ingrid whispers, looking at her hands.
"I'm so sorry," Dynah whispers, while hugging her slightly tighter to her. "We didn't exactly get to introduce ourselves. I'm Dynah."
After sniffling a few times, Ingrid responds in a whisper, "Ingrid."
"Ingrid, that is a beautiful name." Dynah says, carefully wiping away some of Ingrid's tears.
She nods, as she tries to even out her breathing. Ingrid leans further into the comfort that Dynah is offering her, as she lets tears fall from her eyes.
Ingrid starts to twitch as the noises start to filter into her ears, and smells meet her nose. Glancing around she tries to find the source of the sounds and smells. The noises start to rise in volume , and she tries to cover her ears with her hands.
"Why's it so loud?" Ingrid asks, hands pressed to her ears as she shakes her head slightly.
Dynah takes a breath and shifts to sit in front of Ingrid. Placing her hands on either side of her head and making the blonde look at her.
"Focus on me, listen to my voice. Try and focus on me. The sound of my voice, the slow beat of my heart, the blood shifting through my Viens." Dynah whispers, "Close you eyes."
Ingrid looks at Dynah, trying to focus on the hands holding her head still, and the voice speaking to her. It takes a few moments but slowly she is able to hear the slow beating of Dynah's heart, and the slow but steady movement of blood inside of her. Her eyelids drop as she tries to force herself to concentrate on the older vampire. Over several minutes she starts to be blocking out some of the other noises, that she still can't tell where they are coming from.
"Is that better?" Dynah asks, slowly removing her hands from Ingrid.
"Yes," Ingrid says, "Thank you."
"Of course," Dynah says.
Ingrid continues to keep her eyes closed for a few more minutes, focusing on Dynah. She notices that Dynah's heart beats very slowly, as in a beat every 5 seconds, the heart pumps just fast enough that blood continues to flow. Her head slowly tilts, to the side as she tries to figure out the slow heartbeat.
As she is focusing on Dynah's heart, another similar slow beat comes into focus. This second beat is slightly faster, not by much though. It is much closer than the woman's heart in front of her. Ingrid looks down at her own chest and realizes her own heart is the second heartbeat.
Ingrid blinks twice before looking up at Dynah's face and asks, "What are we?"
"We are vampires," Dynah says, voice gentle to Ingrids ears.
"Vampire?" Ingrid says, eyes going wide.
The images in her memory start blaring through her mind at a rapid rate, showing her on repeat; Finishing her finals, the taco truck, the man or vampire, the bloody party, Dynah's eyes. The images of her memory stop flying as the word 'vampire' clicks into place in her mind. The word vampire now sits next to the man from the party, Dynah, and a slightly blurry mental picture of herself.
"You turned me?" Ingrid asks for clarification.
Dynah gives a small smile. "Yes, you called to me, and I couldn't just let you die."
"Vampires are real. I've been turned into one." Ingrid mutters to herself.
"You are doing great, Ingrid," Dynah says. The smile is mostly reassuring.
Ingrid nods and takes in a steadying breath, focusing back on Dynah's heart to calm herself.
"If you are ready, I can call in Elisabeth to bring you something to eat. It will be in a cup." Dynah asks.
At that moment, Ingrid felt a slight burning in her throat and a deep hunger. So she nods, trying to focus on Dynah, and not the sudden hunger burning inside her.
Ingrid feels a tickle. She isn't sure where from, but her instincts are telling her that the feeling is in her blood. A few moments later the door to the room is opening and in steps Elisabeth, with a paper coffee cup in hand. She quickly hands the cup to Dynah and offers Ingrid a smile before making a quick exit from the room, shutting the door behind her.
The smell coming from the cup hits Ingrid's nose and causes her to moan slightly, and her eyes lock onto the cup. Her mouth starts to water.
"Ingrid," Dynah's voice demands, causing Ingrid to look at her instead of the cup.
"Yes?" Ingrid bites out.
"I need you to try to drink as slowly as you can." Dynah says, "I'll hand you the cup once you tell me that you will do that."
Ingrid takes a slow, almost steadying, breathe and nods before carefully saying, "I will try and drink as slowly as I can."
Dynah smiles and offers the cup to Ingrid. Ingrid's eyes immediately shift from Dynah's face to the cup at the movement. She bites her lip trying to stop herself from lunging for the cup. With a gasp she opens her mouth quickly and reaches up.
Her lower set of canines have sharpened, and her upper set has lengthened as well as sharpened along with her upper lateral incisors.
Her fangs have extended in the anticipation of feeding.
"Don't worry, they won't stay like that, and you'll learn to control them." Dynah says, laughter lacing her voice.
Ingrid slowly pulls her hand away from her quick inspection of her teeth. She'll have more time to check them out later, after she's had blood and the burning deep inside her stops. She accepts the cup from Dynah and raises it to take a drink.
