Denial

Denial

May 07, 2025

The world around Ryo began to warp like it had previously. He was suddenly standing upright now. The coarse, uneven ground became smooth, and glistening.

The bright sun disappeared entirely, instead the ceiling clad in golden colors appeared.

The girl who was sitting near, was gone, as though she never existed. So did the man.

The crashing object disappeared, and thousands of people, around the same age as him appeared.

[Last Place: Ryo]

Ryo had attained the very last place in the Final Scenario Test, while it did not have much affect in a broader sense. He would still receive a good offer from Squads, and, he would still be the best candidate in the Squad Selection Examination, with only a singular 'Last Place.' However, it was confusing to him.

'Why? Why... did this happen?!' He was confused, his eyes contracted, a chill running down his spine.

---

"WHAT?!" Mori shouted, his voice reverberating inside the room.

In the heat of the moment, he had entirely forgotten that The Third, Lux, was also present inside the room.

Lux turned to look at Mori with an annoyed frown. He said, in an assertive manner, "Why are you shouting? This place isn't your home, and these perspectives are not television shows. Do this at your home, here you're only the Head Overseer of The Examinations."

"But, this doesn't make any sense! How?!"

Seeing this, Lux couldn't help but let out a pained sigh. "It's because he was an idiot, like you are right now."

"There was no Hidden Test. Not in the Final Scenario Test, Neither in the First, or the Third Selection Test. Just because they had 'special conditions,' it doesn't mean that they were Hidden Tests. The Second Scenario Test is the only one with a Hidden Test." He explained.

"Although, I suppose it was, in a way, there was a Hidden Test in the Final Scenario Test. However, Ryo failed."

"There were multiple ways to protect the girl, all while staying inside the Safe Zone. There was no need to find the father. The test was for them to realize their worth."

"The value of a Resistance Soldier."

"Sure, in a way, he really did realize his worth, however, it wasn't the way he was supposed to. Not in this test, which already had a predetermined way towards victory, an already predetermined 'correct' answer." Lux quietly stood up, avoiding Mori's baffled, confused, and rageful expression.

'Now that the exams are over, I guess it's time to announce the results...' He glanced at his phone, looking at the dozens of offers sent for the students.

"I'll be going now." He informed Mori, before walking out the door.

---

Ryo's overthinking, and over-assuming nature had resulted in him placing at the very last in the Final Scenario Test. He had done a good act, under the assumption of it being a 'Hidden Test.' However, nobody cared.

But, he did not realize this. He instantly began blaming the entirety of Resistance for a such an outcome. 'I don't get it? What else did they want me to do?! I cleared the Hidden Test didn't I?! Was it my time? Did the first place have an Impulse, a speed Impulse? But I'm the only one in the candidates list with an Impulse... maybe they were hiding it? Otherwise... how could such a thing...' Every fiber of Ryo's body had tried to deny the results. He could barely keep himself rational.

He looked up and saw that almost everyone present had been staring at him. Some had gazes of amusement, some saw him a strange extra-terrestrial being,  while the others were admiring him.

At that moment he came to realize that the people were... painting as heroic?

Such a thing baffled him. Although it made perfect sense why one would think that. However to Ryo, just saving one life didn't make him some 'hero.'

He had ultimately done that solely because he believed that it was the Hidden Test of the Fourth, and Final Scenario.

While his gaze was downcast, he heard loud claps, the sound came from somewhere around the stage at front.

Following this, he heard a coarse, and hardened voice.

He looked up and immediately identified who it was.

"Hello candidates. I am Lux, The Commander Of The Army." He looked at the large crowd in front. Everyone stared at him with curious, and knowing eyes. Seeing this, he let out a chuckle, before continuing. "It seems everyone here already knows me."

"Well. Now that the Final Test is over, marking the conclusion of the Squad Selection Test. All of you will be placed in Squads."

"Some might go into the normal-general army which every Squad has while some have received offers from Division Squads, these offers, making them a new core member of the Squad. And, a lot of have received one! Since it is quite impossible for me to call upon everyone, I'll just call the very few who got selected into prestigious Squads."

"And, lastly, those who are upset because they had performed poorly, do not worry. You all will be able to raise in ranks." He concluded his speech.

'What... a joke. They'll put them in a normal army, launch them off to another Planetary Sector, and they'll never been seen again. Nobody will care if they die, of live.' He criticized.

Looking around, he saw the expressions of other candidates. It seemed that a few of them also knew this.

Lux's heavy voice bought all attention back to him, as he began announcing the names of those who had been chosen by the Division Squads.

"Firstly, Jia Shangfeng, who has received an offer from First Division Squad Six."

A thunderous sound of clapping roared instantly. Many stared at the ones who had been picked with keen eyes.

"The next one is, Lisa Kang, receiving an offer from, Main Division Squad Two."

Another, even more energetic clap thundered.

Being selected into a Main Division was an honor only a few gain.

Ryo however, not being in a good state mentally, criticized, 'How can people be so stupid?! It's a fucking war. Why? Why're th- they all running after something like 'fame' or 'glory' why does it matter how much fame one has?! What good will it do if even your very life isn't safe?!'

What he did not realize was that he was acting as a hypocrite. His current swirling thoughts had contradicted his actions.

"Li Fei, has received an offer from Main Division Squad Seven."

Clap! Clap! Clap!

"And, lastly. Ryo, from Main Division Squad Eight!"

Thunderous clapping ensued.

However, this occasion was not on Ryo's mind. It was the least of his worries, in his current state.
