The principal took them to his office. “I can’t believe you started a food fight in the lunchroom. You could have spread salmonella,”
“But Karen-” Adam started.
“-Is my daughter and therefore excused from scorn,”
“They were so mean to me, Daddy! When I stopped by to wish her a happy birthday, she attacked me! She strangled me and I couldn’t breathe. So you see I had no choice but to freak out,”
Tabs rolled her eyes at the absurd story.
“Well that’s all I need to hear. Monday detention for all of you and you’ll have to clean the school afterwards,”
“That’s it? No suspension? Daddy!” Karen stomped her foot.
“Now now pumpkin, I think that’ll be enough to make sure they never bother you again,” the Principal said softly.
“Fine,”
“Good now all of you get out of here,”
The three of them leave and go home for the day.
…
Meanwhile…
Rat King is chasing a few kids stealing their backpacks and the stuff in it.
“Your contributions will be noted,” Rat King snarled.
One kid threw a rock at Rat King, making him drop the boy he was holding.
“Hey you can’t take all our stuff!”
Rat King growled. “What did you just say to me you little pest,”
The boy looked terrified. “I-”
“Just for that you cost yourself and your kind all the things. Give me that!” Rat King grabbed his backpack.
“Wait no! It’s mine!” the kid yelled.
“Not anymore! You don’t deserve it anyway,” Rat King ripped it out of the boy’s hands.
“Waaah! Someone call my mom!” the boy cried and ran off.
“Selfish brat! This is too good for children!”
…
Meanwhile…
Fiona is sitting in Tabs’s room looking around at her decorations. “Wow you’re really into animals,”
Tabs came out of the bathroom in her party clothes. “Yeah, love em. What do you think?”
“Awww! Oh my God! You look adorable!”
“Thanks! You sure you don’t want to stay?”
“I’d love to but Danielle’s going out tonight and someone has to watch Flynn,”
Tabs deflated a bit. “Yeah, how’s he doing anyway?”
“He’s not getting worse,”
“Well that’s good,”
“Yeah I should probably get going before Danielle decides to leave him alone,”
“Yeah I’ll see you tomorrow,”
“Yeah! Happy Birthday Tabs!”
“Thanks Fee!”
Fiona walked downstairs and out of the house as Ben and Lil watched her go. “Took you long enough. Can we get this over with now?
Ben glared at her. “Stop it,”
“No,”
“Phew! Finally got enough food ready for five kids,” Jan said, wiping the sweat off her forehead.
“Let’s just be glad Fiona couldn’t stay,” Don froze. “Wait, that came out wrong! I mean of course we would love for her to stay if Tabs wanted her to stay but-”
“Don… Darling. Just grab the cake,”
Jan and Don walk into the living room with the cake.
“Here we go kids!”
They start to sing the Happy Birthday song when there’s a knock at the door.
“Huh that’s weird. Did you invite someone else, Tabs?” Jan asked.
“No?” Tabs answered confused.
“It’s probably just one of the neighbors. I’ll be right back,” Don put the cake down and walked over to the door.
Just before Don reached the door, Tabs’s 6th sense went off again. “Oh no,”
The Rat King busts the door open and Don went flying back to the floor.
“Don!”
“Give me that cake! I want it!” Rat King Roared.
“Kids. To your rooms. Now. Adam. Mac. Go with Tabs,” Jan ordered.
The kids all ran upstairs to their rooms.
“Give me that cake humans!”
“Should we go out the window and hide for a week?” Mac asked.
“Through the window?! Are you crazy?! We’re on the second floor!” Adam yelled.
“Well I don’t see you coming up with any better ideas!”
“You also don’t see me coming up with worse ideas! Cause that’s literally not possible!” Adam snapped.
“Guys! Not now!” Tabs yelled.
Rat King had knocked Tabs’s parents out and threw them to the floor.
“That’s it!” Tabs snapped and transformed into her bat form.
“You made a big mistake coming here!” Tabs flew towards Rat King and got smacked into her friends and through the floor into a pile of paper in the basement.
Adam noticed the papers. “Hey what’s this stuff?”
“It’s my dad’s research… Guess there was more of it,”
“The rat… king or queen… isn’t that what they guy said he was?” Mac asked as she started reading one of the papers.
“The Rat King? You can read this?!”
“The printer is running out of ink but binary is still binary,”
“Binary?”
“Yeah, that’s what it’s written in,”
Rat King jumped into the basement with them and grabbed Mac.
“Put her down!” Tabs tackled Rat King.
“Mac! Figure out what to do about that thing!” Adam yelled.
“Okay I got it! Tabs!”
Tabs flew over to her.
“It says Rat royalty are very insecure without their crown. If you can grab it you can lure him into that electronet over there!” Mac pointed to the Crossbreed weapon in the corner of the room.
“Got it!”
Tabs flew over to the Rat King and grabbed his crown.
“Ah! Give me that back!” Rat King screeched.
The Rat King chased Tabs into the net and got zapped into unconsciousness.
“What do we do with him now?” Adam asked.
The three kids put Rat King into a wagon and wheel him to the Crossbreed Control building. They rolled the wagon down the hill and the Rat King went flying through the window.
“You’re welcome,” Adam called out as the three left.
Tabs helped Adam and Mac back into her bedroom, looking exhausted.
“Jeez Tabs, you must be exhausted,”
“Uh no no! What makes you say-” Tabs fainted.
…
Ben and Lil were walking down the hallway.
“Tabs? Tabs? Tabitha you ok?” Ben called out.
“Ben, the Rat ate them. Let it go,” Lil said deadpanned.
Ben opened Tabs’s door and saw Adam and Mac holding Tabs’s unconscious body.
“Oh my God! What happened? Is she hurt?”
“W-What?! No no no no no! She just uh-” Adam tried to come up with a good explanation.
“Fell out the window silly!” Adam glared at her like she was insane.
“She’s fine. The bushes broke her fall. We’re just gonna stay with her as she sleeps it off with no supervision whatsoever,”
Ben closed the door to give her some privacy.
“I wanted to see her get eaten,” Lil pouted.
“Lil,” Ben warned.
“What? It’s not like anyone would notice,”
…
Sometime later…
Tabs started regaining consciousness.
“She’s awake!” Mac exclaimed.
“What… what happened?” Tabs asked groggily, sitting up in her bed.
“You beat the Rat Guy. It took a lot out of you. You’ve been lying here for four months,”
“Four months!?” Tabs tried to shoot up in her bed and Adam held her down.
Mac laughed. “Just kidding, it’s only been like 40 minutes,”
“Mac,” Adam growled.
…
Sometime later…
Don was pacing back and forth in front of the kids. “Ok so run it by me again. What exactly did you see happen to the Crossbreed?”
“One of your rays bounced off the walls and hit him. He ran away,” Tabs lied.
“Looked like the Rat King if I ever heard him. Why that little-” Jan pushed Don out of the room before he could freak out.
“You ok Tabs?” Adam asked when they had privacy.
“Yeah, I think I finally know what I want to use my powers for. Crossbreeds are always coming around here hurting humans. Maybe I can use my powers to help humans. Fighting Rat King made me feel as good as I felt in over a month,” Tabs smirked.
“Oh yeah! Oh you’re gonna need a superhero name!” Mac exclaimed.
“Do I? No one’s gonna be seeing me,”
“How about Batty! No… Uh… Spooky eyes? No, that's not right. Uh… Bat- Um…” Mac brainstormed.
“What about something spooky? Like Halloween themed?” Adam suggested.
“Oh that’s good. What about Hauntful?” Tabs pitched.
“Hauntful?”
“Why not? It’s fitting,”
“You know what, I like it!” Mac exclaimed.
