Truth Be Told

Chapter 7-Ferris

Chapter 7-Ferris

May 10, 2025

"She's spending the night at your place?" Cole had a hotdog in his hand as he stared at Ferris, baffled.

Ferris nodded his head, equally confused. "Yeah, why is that so shocking? I don't see anything wrong with it."

"Didn't you barely meet her like two or three weeks ago?" A girl sitting beside Cole spoke up. She was in the school's uniform and had very light brown hair and deep black eyes. On her face were thick, black blocky glasses.

Cole nodded his head in agreement. "Aimee's got a point, like she always does."

Ferris rolled his eyes. "I really don't see the problem here. We're doing this just to work on the song."

"That's it? This has nothing to do with that scheme of yours?" Cole took a large bite out of his hotdog.

"Scheme?" Ferris was lost for a moment. "Oh, oh! Y-Yeah! That's what this is for," He lied. He had actually completely forgotten about the plan when he made the suggestion to Wynona. At the moment he was only thinking about writing the song, not June.

Aimee eyed Ferris. "I really think you should just drop that little plan of yours. I mean can't you just talk to June now?"

Ferris shook his head. "No, she's still kind of avoiding me. I need Wyn to want June and I to hangout. The only way I can get that far is for her to be my friend first."

"Right…" Aimee looked down at her food. "I still think it's a dumb plan and I definitely don't think you should be helping him." She glared at Cole.

Cole chuckled nervously. "Hey, I'm just trying to help my friend out. You'd do it for me."

Aimee fell silent and turned back to her food.

"Exactly," Ferris chimed in. "Besides, I'll still be her friend after everything. What she doesn't know won't hurt her."

Cole and Aimee looked at each other briefly then turned back to Ferris with forced grins. Ferris frowned and looked down at his food. He hated how much they doubted him, but he was not going to let it get to him. He knew his plan would work and no one would get hurt.

"Well, how are things going with her?" Cole asked.

Ferris' head shot up. "Who? June?"

Cole slowly nodded his head. "Who else do you like?" He asked sarcastically.

He laughed and shook his head. "It's been…okay."

"Doesn't sound 'okay.'" Aimee glanced at him. "Plan not working out?"

Ferris briefly glared at Aimee. "It's just, she's avoiding me more since I started talking to Wyn."

"How so?" Cole took another big bite from his hotdog.

"Well, whenever I have talked to her she doesn't really take much interest in…me. And whenever I meet up with Wyn and she's there, she's quick to leave. Like this morning, she left before I even got to the table."

Aimee raised her eyebrows, almost shocked at what she was hearing. "Damn, maybe she doesn't feel the same way, Ferris."

"Hey," Cole chimed in. "No need to be mean about it."

"I'm not trying to be mean. I'm being genuine. It sounds like she doesn't like him," Aimee clarified.

Ferris frowned. "Maybe she just needs more time to warm up to me."

"I don't know, maybe." Cole shrugged his shoulders.

Aimee added, "We're not the best people to ask, Ferris. I mean, we're both single."

Cole mumbled something, but Ferris did not catch it, but he noticed Aimee glaring at him.

Ignoring whatever just happened, Ferris asked, "Well, who else can I ask?" Ferris raised an eyebrow. "I'm not going to ask Wyn."

"True." Aimee looked back down at her food. "Well, I'm sure you'll figure something out. Have fun with your plans tomorrow."

Ferris nodded his head slowly. "Yeah, we'll see."

Ferris was in his room getting ready to leave. He had his hair slicked back neatly and was wearing a black button-down and black slacks with his white shoes. He never liked dressing up, but the restaurant Nonna had chosen required him to dress up. He had let Wynona know to dress up as well, but he was not sure if Wynona had any formal clothes aside from their uniform. If not, Ferris was willing to let her borrow his clothes.

As he ran into the bathroom to put in his contacts there was a knock at the door. Ferris panicked and tried to hurry and put them in, but of all days today was the day they were irritating his eyes.

He heard the door open and tried to blink away the irritation, but his eyes continued to hurt.

"Ferris?" Nonna called. "Your friend is here."

"I'll be right there!" Ferris called. He took the contacts out and tried to splash water in his eyes, hoping it would help.

There was a knock on the door. "Hey, your grandmother told me you were in here?" It was Wynona.

Ferris was panicking more. "I–I'll be right there!" He tried to put the contacts in again, but his eyes were burning so much. He swore under his breath and took them out.

The door slowly opened. "Um, your grandmother wants to leave now."

Ferris froze, his back to Wynona. "Oh! Tell her I need a minute."

"I don't think she wants to wait any longer, Ferris…" Wynona said.

As if on cue, Nonna yelled, "Ferris! Let's go, I'm hungry!"

"Is everything okay?" Wynona asked.

Ferris had his head down. "Y–Yeah, just go, please."

"Um, okay?" Wynona gently closed the door.

Desperate, Ferris ignored the pain and put in his contacts. He left the bathroom, his eyes burning. "Hey, I'm ready to go." He glanced at Nonna, but his eyes stopped at Wynona. She was wearing a simple, slim fit checkered pinafore dress with a dark green long sleeve underneath. Her usually messy blonde hair was combed out of her face and elegantly fell down her shoulders. Ferris was completely fascinated by her new look. She cleaned up nicely.

"Ferris!" Nonna shuffled over to him and placed her hand on his cheek. She got really close and looked at his eyes very carefully. "Your eyes are red! Go take out the contacts."

His heart stopped. "N–No, I'm fine, Nonna. Let's just go."

She frowned. "Go, Ferris."

He stared at her for a while, hoping she would change her mind. She did not and he returned back to the bathroom and removed the contacts. When he came back out he had his head down and he did his best to avoid Wynona's gaze.

"Now we can go." Nonna opened the door and slowly made her way to the car.

Ferris and Wynona followed after her. He could feel Wynona's gaze on him, but he was not in the mood to explain why his eyes were a different color. It was a topic he hated to bring up, and one he did his best to avoid.

He wanted to get in the passenger seat, but Nonna was insistent on Ferris sitting in the back with Wynona. He did not see why it mattered, but he knew better than to argue with her. He sat down beside Wynona and looked out the window the entire time.

The car ride was completely silent, aside from the radio Nonna had on. Ferris was adjusting to the awkward tension when Wynona tapped his arm. "Everything okay?"

Ferris nodded his head. "Yeah."

"Then why are you avoiding me? You're the one who invited me." Wynona sounded confused and hurt.

Ferris felt bad but he did not want to look at her. "I'm not. It's got nothing to do with you."

"Then can you at least look at me?" Wynona asked.

He shook his head. "No."

"So something is wrong then."

Ferris shook his head. "I never said that."

"I don't know," Wynona shifted in her seat. "Whenever June is upset with me she doesn't look at me. Do you do the same thing?"

"No, I don't." He was becoming annoyed.

"I don't believe you," Wynona said.

Ferris clenched his fists. "Wyn, drop it please."

"Not until you look at me."

"Wyn–"

"Ferris."

Frustrated, Ferris looked at her. "See? Everything is fine."

Wynona quickly grinned. "Got you to…" She trailed off. "I thought your eyes were blue."

Ferris looked back at the window. "I don't want to talk about it."

"Oh," Wynona sounded surprised. "That's okay, too." The rest of the car ride Wynona did not say anything.

When they arrived there were large, red neon letters on the front of the building spelling Fluorescence, and starting from the steakhouse’s door there was a line that stopped at the end of the curb. Everyone in line was dressed up. Ferris had eaten here so much, but for others it could be intimidating. Ferris took a brief glimpse at Wynona and could see how curious she was. He assumed Wynona had never been to a place as fancy as this.

Ferris felt bad for snapping at her earlier and tried to lighten the mood. "Cool right?” He nudged Wynona’s shoulder and nodded his head toward the building.

Wynona gawked at the building and shook her head. "How are you going to pay?"

"Oh," Ferris shrugged his shoulders. "Usually the meals are free. Nonna owns the restaurant. She opened it years back with my grandfather. She visits it at least twice a week, but it's able to run on its own for the most part."

Wynona looked very impressed. "Wow…"

Inside, Wynona was quiet for most of the dinner. So quiet, Ferris had to order for her. The menu could have been considered almost as intimidating as the people who ate here. Wynona seemed pleased with the meal Ferris had chosen for her though.

Throughout the dinner, Nonna had asked Wynona a lot of questions. It was almost embarrassing. Ferris tried to stop her, but she was very insistent. Wynona handled it pretty well, but Ferris could tell she was uncomfortable with all of the questions.

On the way back, Wynona fell asleep in the car. It made Ferris laugh watching her head bob up and down. Ferris did his best to keep Wynona's head upright, but she always ended up with her head dangling. After a while Ferris gave up, but he did not fail to take photos to show her later.

When they made it back to Ferris' house, Nonna was quick to go to her room. Ferris woke up Wynona and brought her inside but she quickly fell onto the couch and fell back to sleep. Ferris chuckled and went into the hallway to grab the extra blankets and pillows. He tossed the blankets beside Wynona and sat down on the other side of her.

Ferris gently shook Wynona. "Hey, you should change."

Wynona grumbled under her breath, but she sat up. She rubbed the sleep from her eyes and stared at Ferris for a while. "We were supposed to work on the song…"

"Oh," Ferris laughed. "We'll work on it tomorrow." He stood up and pulled Wynona to her feet. "Come on, did you bring any clothes?"

Wynona nodded her head and grabbed a small backpack that was lying by the door. "I'll change in the bathroom."

"I'll be in my room." Ferris smiled and quickly went into his room. He changed out of his clothes and into a purple shirt and black shorts. He waited in his room for a while until he heard the bathroom door close. He listened to Wynona walk down the hall and into the family room again. Ferris would have stayed in his room and gone to bed, but he wanted to talk to Wynona. He waited a while longer before going back into the family room.

Ferris walked back into the room to see Wynona setting up the blankets on the couch. She looked up and smiled smally. "Hey, do you need something?"

"Nah," Ferris sat down on the blankets Wynona had just set down. "Just wanted to talk."

Wynona looked surprised, but she sat down next to Ferris. "Sure, about what?"

"Anything." Ferris grinned.

She was quiet a while before she said in a very quiet tone, "I like your brown eyes better than blue."

Ferris froze, his gaze stuck on Wynona. He did not agree, but hearing it from someone else felt different. Of course, Nonna told him she liked his eyes, but hearing it from someone like Wynona, someone he barely knew, felt nicer. He almost believed her, but in the back of his mind he knew it was a lie. There was no way eyes like his could ever be anything but disgusting and monstrous. No amount of pretty words and sweet nothings could change his mind.
