Following Harry and his son heading towards the cemetery, Ree is thinking about the topic of why it’s necessary for him to be at the recent conversation on the summarising.
He has been pulled into this conversation already habitually abruptly and unexpectedly. Listening to the discussion of choosing Urs's abilities and making their priority for the calculations he can’t understand why he needs this knowledge.
Harry and Alrus communicate not with the cub but with its businesslike part. At first, it has turned out that Urs can't block the fear of his emotional part for more than two hours a day. Secondly, Ur’s development at the level of a five-year-old child prevents them from discussing such serious topics.
The completion of the book’s translation made by the Ur’s businesslike part in a record time has given the opportunity to develop in greater details plans for the book for the near future until Alrus and Harry will be preoccupied with their problems.
From everything heard by Ree during a conversation he has been interested by the Alrus’s idea to replace drones with animated artifacts dressed as different kinds of fauna, from small animals to different kinds of insects. And the substitute of hands for Sirius will be small monkeys with a variety of instrumentation.
To Harry's question, exuding unconcealed sarcasm.
«And where will they be? Will they be swarming near Urs? Or to sit on him?»
Alrus only shrugs his shoulders and answers calmly.
«In a pocket dimension that I'll create immediately and tie to Urs as soon as we put it on.»
This statement makes Harry choke, and he freezes like a monument to himself. The idea is so wonderful that after Harry has come out of a stupor, a sincere stilted gratitude is expressed to Alrus.
Ree is brought out of his recollection by Harry's loud exclamation and a slap of his hand on his forehead.
«Well…» and he replies to his son’s raised eye-brow, «I forgot! I should first tell you how I got a secret and only then show it.»
This statement makes Alrus slightly smile; he calmly takes two doll’s arm-chairs out of the dimension pocket that he immediately enlarges.
Meanwhile Ree looks around. They’re in a room familiar from his past memories, just behind the secret entrance.
With a wave of his hand Alrus offers his father to sit down. With a nod of thanks, Harry sits down, and, having gathered his thoughts, he begins his narrative.
«As I said during Sirius's creation, I had a new idea. To implement it, I needed a new free space again. And that’s when I realised that at this rate, I would soon have projects scattered all over my basement. Only the thought that I ran along the basement from one project to another made me feel sick. And that's without taking into account the fact that I want to keep them secret until I decide whether or not to present them to the public.
I shared these thoughts and ideas with Sirius, not really hoping for anything, but later it turned out that I made a reasonable decision. In the books that you presented to me, Sirius found and showed me a wizard’s work on creating multiple rooms that could be accessed through a single door, opening them with the help of an artifact switch specially created for this purpose.
After reviewing the materials submitted to me for consideration, I rejoiced. This was exactly what I needed; that’s why I gave Sirius a task to calculate a bundle of five rooms. Also, we decided that he would make his room the second one—well, what I’m telling you, you've seen it all yourself,» and he waved his hand. «After this in this room, I started a new project.
The idea, or rather, its new embodiment, was the same: to be able to watch memories with full presence in them without harming the physical body. The essence of the new idea was this time to reproduce memories with the help of artifacts embodying material illusions.»
«An interesting idea. I already want to see what you managed to do.»
«Soon you’ll see. Don’t bother about it. The biggest difficulty occurred because of a material used to make the artifact that would create the material illusions.
The preliminary calculations showed that the materials of our world didn’t give me the results I needed to realise my idea. Once again, Sirius found a way out of the situation, and once again, I was glad that it had occurred to me to animate a magethinker.
So, in the books from other worlds, Sirius found a work of one alchemist that developed the concept of growing a special base for artifact creation with the parameters needed for it.
It would be impossible to grow the material I needed in the form of crystals at all if you hadn’t, in addition to translating the book, created a table of the intersubstitutability of ingredients used in that world with those available in ours.»
«What a thing to say! When I got this book, I immediately appreciated all the advantages of this discovery. And so I put every effort into creating a table of intersubstitutability. And it took me... a very long time to determine which ingredients from that world could be replaced with ours.»
« I have only one question. When did you have time to do all this? You were gone only for a year, and when you showed up, you had this table ready.»
To this question he receives only a shrug of the shoulders. Having said ‘hmm’ Harry continues.
«Sirius and I made calculations of several crystal options that would have to serve as the basis for a material illusion artifact.
So, when I began the exploration in order to experimentally find out which of the developed variants of artifacts would suit better during the installation of one of them, everything happened…»
After a long silence, having decided that he won’t hear the continuation, Alrus asks a question, prompting him to continue.
«What happened, father? You didn't finish talking.»
«What? Ahhhh...» Harry waves his hand. «You'll see for yourself. Let's go!» he says, getting up from his chair and going near the door.
Alrus stands up, diminishes the chairs, and puts them in his dimensional pocket. He does all this while watching his father, who reveals a mage panel and begins to enter the code on it.
When the code has been entered, a niche opens in the wall, and out of it a mage book comes lying on the platform, and near it there’re a few more artifacts. Harry opens the magobook, and before turning it on, he drips a drop of his blood onto the disc, performing the function of the mouse.
Harry has connected the mage book to the mage panel, and only after that, with the help of the artifacts lying next to the mage book, begins various manipulations. At first, a full scan of the Alrus’s body is made, then the scanning of his eye’s retina. The sample of his blood is taken, the magic with the use of his wand is recorded, then the wandless magic is recorded and fingerprints are taken from both hands …Alrus only shakes his head not knowing how to deal this.
«Well, that's almost it!» Harry says as soon as he has finished the work, and then explains. «I straightaway created a continuous access for you; that's why it took so long.»
Alrus only shrugs his shoulders because he has no words of censorship and his upbringing has prevented him from using obscene words.
Harry carefully pushes the platform with the magebook and artefacts into the wall and enters the next code in the mage panel. As soon as the last key is pressed, the door begins to disappear, and in its place appears a mirrored surface, shimmering with all the colours of the rainbow.
«An interuniverse portal!» Alrus says with admiration. «Now I understand your paranoia.»
« How... oh, right...!» Harry says thoughtfully, then shakes his head, getting rid of unnecessary thoughts, «It's my first defence, which I created as soon as I found out the unusual ability of my blood. I was pretty scared that if anyone found out about it, it would cause me a lot of unnecessary problems.
Later, once the event that led to the fact that interuniverse portal had occurred instead of the passage to the third room, the decision came by itself. I understood that the best protection for the portal would be not only the protection of the portal itself but also another protection that wouldn’t allow it to be completely reached. So I created the two-levelled protection that you saw – you gave good advice for improving it.
But I didn't remove the protection directly from the portal; that’s why all these preliminary procedures were required.»
Having made a short pause, Harry hands his son a paper he has taken out of his pocket.
«Here, take. It's a code to be typed after the portal disappears. It's enchanted so that once you read it, it’ll be imprinted in your memory forever, but it'll only appear in the memory in this room, near this door, and if no one threatens you.»
«Hm. Another level of defence. Not bad; that is what motivation means.»
«I agree with you. Before, I didn’t think that I could create such complex and multi-levelled protection. What’s next? You should enter the code in fifteen, twenty minutes after I go. I need time to... put things in order,» Harry averts his eyes saying the last word. «And once more, as soon as you go from the portal attentively watch your step, there’ll be a self-moving road track on the floor. Stand on it, and it’ll take you to me.»
Having given comprehensive instructions Harry, for some time, pensively marks time until Alrus hastens him.
«Just go! I got it, father. You don’t have to worry about it; I’ll follow up your instructions to the letter.»
After that, having stood for a few more seconds, Harry nods to his son and steps into the arch of the portal. Ree is immediately dragged after him as if he’s tied to Harry with a rope.
Once on the other side of the portal, Ree’s slightly disappointed. Why? He doesn't know what he has expected to see, but not the landscape that has opened up before him. Somehow, he’s imagined the place differently.
