1 month later. The winds have almost completely stopped. The sun is always blaring as there are no clouds to count in the sky. There is no coolness to oppose or subside the heat. The assailant and Debra are cleaning up after their last meal. The assailant is tending to the garden Pearl had started while Debra is cleaning up around the house. It has been a calm month since they arrived. Pearl had still been helping as much as he could. Though they are wanted, life has only gotten easier for her since they arrived. The assailant and Debra have been trying all month to get her to only focus on Crystal. Though she likes staying busy and the extra company. She tells them about her husband who had been killed by The Huntsman shortly before they arrived. “He was a businessman at heart, even when real business is long gone. I don’t know why they would want him dead.” She tells them that The Huntsman leaving her a widow was the reason why she helped them. The assailant is shocked and horrified. But he keeps it to himself. What she doesn’t know won’t hurt her or them. They thought they wouldn’t be smiling for a while because of the situation. They were wrong. Pearl was the best kind of person for them to end up with. The assailant and Debra lay in bed. Pearl thanks them for another night of help before wishing them goodnight and heading to bed. Debra has had something on her mind for the last 2 weeks that she decides as best to bring up now. “We have to keep moving soon,” she says to the assailant. He lays staring blankly in the dimmed bedroom. He wants to ignore what she just said and act like it isn’t the truth. But he knows he can’t. He responds with a simple okay. They shut off the last of the lights and go to sleep. They awaken and, as they are making breakfast, Debra continues last night’s conversation like it never ended. “We can still make it to Southern Canada. They won’t follow us all the way passed the border. They would be shot on sight. It’s been like that ever since the treaty.” The assailant silently considers this option. She is unhappy with his silence. While breakfast is being made, they hear gunshots coming from outside. Pearl quickly runs back inside, making sure to shut and lock the door behind her. “There’s a man firing all around out there,” Pearl urgently tells them, “stay inside.” The assailant takes a peak outside to see who it is and he makes a realization. Debra notices his realization. “Who is it?” Debra concerningly asks him. “It’s THE Huntsman. It’s the person they send after anyone who betrays us.” Debra and Pearl notice the worry in his voice. Pearl goes and quickly grabs Crystal. When she returns, she tells the 2 they need to leave quickly. Debra thinks they are more likely to die if they leave. The assailant tells them both to stay put and grabs his mantle and his gun. He exits out the back door. There, he is shocked to see a man. A different man than the one he saw outside. Dean.
