From Over The Horizon

Chapter 14

Chapter 14

May 14, 2025

The 3 are back to moving across the dystopian desert. The assailant and Debra have the same goal they had a month ago. Debra is untrusting of Dean being with them. She feels betrayed by someone she hardly even knew. They keep moving until nightfall. The soft blowing winds are all that can be heard in the silence. It reminds the assailant of the very first night he and Debra had run away together. And the very first night after the bomb. He separates from her and Dean. Debra leaves Dean to check on him. She walks up to him and he turns away. She notices that he is being emotional. She had not seen that from him in nearly a decade. He is blind in his tears. Debra worries more seeing this. “Please. You haven’t said anything about how you are feeling in years. Please talk to me. Tell me what’s wrong,” she begs him. He mentions the question that she had asked almost 2 months ago. What is he going to be? What does he do for himself? He had come to realize he had always worked for others. Before and after. And he had never found enjoyment in it since he lost Ava. She doesn’t know what to say. She hadn’t had to talk to him about this in a long time. She hardly ever had to talk about it. “I feel like I don’t know what it’s like to be a person.” He is yearning for an answer. So Debra gives him the best one she can. “You are my husband.  You are a great and thoughtful man. You are brave. And you were and always will be a great father.” The heartfelt response gives him something to smile about. Something to be authentically joyous about rather than just wearing a masking smile. They embrace each other. “Thank you,” he tearfully says. “There is not a single thing you need to thank me for,” she responds. They return to Dean. Dean gestures a thumbs up to Debra with an uncertain look on his face, and she gestures one back. They return to silence and sleep. They dream as heavy as their minds let them.

The assailant lives a life stained by violence, working as a hired killer for a shadowy organization known as The Huntsman. His only solace is Debra, his wife, with whom he shares a quiet but strained existence, the ghost of their lost daughter a constant presence. When a chance encounter with a young girl triggers a buried conscience, he breaks his oath and becomes the hunted. Forced to flee, they seek refuge in a seemingly peaceful village, only to find that the long reach of The Huntsman extends even to this remote haven.
