When the assailant awakens, he sees the fire has already been put out. He worries for a moment before seeing that Debra and Dean are already awake. He packs everything up, with the help of them both. “Let’s keep moving,” he announces to them both. It has been 2 weeks and 2 days of traveling since they lost their last home. Dean was able to estimate that they would reach the border within that time if they didn’t stop moving. So the assailant made sure they didn’t. Dean asks to stop for just a moment. The assailant initially refuses, but Dean tells him it will not harshly affect the time they arrive at the border. The assailant nods and obiliges. Dean makes a stupefied face. “I want to speak with you.” With some annoyance, the assailant obliges again. He tells Debra they will be right back and she nods. Once they are alone, Dean says what he needs to. “I want to talk about that day.” The assailant immediately knows what day he is referring to. The day he always wants to forget about but his mind won’t let him. “What about it?” he dreadingly asks. Dean breathes heavily, like a sigh of relief that he actually is allowing him to speak. “I need you to know I didn’t truly want to do what I did that day.” Dean starts to tear up but continues, “I knew you weren’t making it back if you went after her. I didn’t want me nor Debra to have to go on without both of you.” Though the assailant isn’t enjoying the conversation, he is happy with the clarity he is getting from it. “Then why did you turn on us?” he asks for further explanation. “Because I got that position to benefit all 3 of us, but I got wrapped up in it and it all got to my head more than it should have.” The assailant is satisfied. This is the only good thing he could have gotten out of Dean’s company. He hugs Dean, who is surprised by this. “Thank you for your forgiveness.” He pats Dean on the back. They return to Debra. She notices the smiles on their face and the tears and Dean’s eyes and feels joy. From a far distance, the hired man is watching them through his sniper scope. The 3 approach a sandy hill. From the top of it, they can see the border.. The hired man takes aim, and before the 3 fully descend the hill, fires a shot. His target falls.
The assailant lives a life stained by violence, working as a hired killer for a shadowy organization known as The Huntsman. His only solace is Debra, his wife, with whom he shares a quiet but strained existence, the ghost of their lost daughter a constant presence. When a chance encounter with a young girl triggers a buried conscience, he breaks his oath and becomes the hunted. Forced to flee, they seek refuge in a seemingly peaceful village, only to find that the long reach of The Huntsman extends even to this remote haven. A relentless and brutal tracker is on their trail, turning their desperate flight into a deadly game of cat and mouse.
