Chapter 11 – Preparations

Chapter 11 – Preparations

May 17, 2025

“Here take it.” David was holding a smartphone in his hand. “I also got you a number. I don’t think I need to explain how to use it, am I right?”

“Do I really need one?”

“Yes. You do. We don’t know what the limit of our link is. Even if you don’t get much away from me, you can still use it for other things. Like surfing the net, using other apps, or checking documents. Since we share the same memory pool, we can learn 2 different things at the same time. That would speed up the process twofold.”

Luci took the phone and put it in his pocket. “It sounded reasonable when you say it like that. So did you get that sword, huh?” He pointed the sword at David’s belt.

“Oh yeah. It’s a B-rank sword. The seller said that it’s heavier than normal swords and offered a huge discount. Since I have S-class skill, it didn’t mattered to me. I still don’t know how to use it, tho.” David took out his phone. “I will look for locations of nearby blacksmiths... Oh, I found one; they are apparently in this mall.” He showed his phone to Luci.

“Then, let’s go and show this S-rank dagger to them.”

“Yeah. I don’t think that we have enough money to buy fancy accessories anyway. Let’s go.”

...

When the duo arrived on the 1st floor, they saw various blacksmiths around.

“How could we decide on one?” David let out a deep sigh.

“We can check the items they own. I think?”

“Just because they are repairing the high-rank items doesn’t mean they are good at their jobs.”

“Valid point.”

<Activating skill: The Engineer’s Sight>

“Help me decide.”

<Please point out the wanted features>

“I dunno. Someone who is experienced? You know... Just find me a creepy, grumpy old man with no passion.”

“What? Why would we look out for..? Oh yeah… The comics, the old grumpy guys are always the answer.” Luci let out a deep sigh.

“I like the way you find out the answers just by yourself.”

<Target found. Distance: 22 meters.>

“Let’s go and check. In the worst-case scenario, he would chase us out with a broom.”

...

When they arrived at the location, they saw an old man who’s working on a sword. David approached him and asked: “Hello, sir. Are you taking commissions?”

The old man lifted his head up and checked the young man standing before him. “I’m not interested in low-rank items.”

Luci took out the dagger and showed him.

The man showed interest in it. He lifted his hand to hold the item. Luci handed out the dagger.

“I will fix it.”

“Thanks, sir.” David replied happily.

“I’m not finished. I will fix it, but I need a lava rock. My current rock is almost faded away. So it can’t reach the heat I need. I can’t fix it until my rock arrives.”

David thought for a second and answered. “Can S-class fire skill replace lava rock?”

“I suppose. It can.”

Luci stepped up first and activated his ability. “I will be the fire source.”

“Then let’s get to work. Follow me to the back.” Old man guided Luci to the back.

I guess I’m not needed. “I will be around Luci. Call me when you're done.” David showed his phone.

Luci nodded his head and followed the old man.

...

David started walking without a destination. Decided to move to the upper floors since he has nothing to do here. He got to the upper first floor and walked around.

His mind was blank. Normally, his head would be full of thoughts. Ever since he’s awakened, all of the voices have been silenced. Instead, he's been hearing a soothing melody back of his mind. It was so familiar, yet too foreign.

The melody was the one that brought him back to his senses. If he hadn’t heard it, he would’ve killed that man. “I guess I’m really losing it.” David mumbled.

Then he felt a static pulse around his wrist. The mark was glowing. “Weird, this didn’t happen before. Wait!” David checked Luci’s status in a hurry, but he was fine. Luci's pulse and other vital stats were normal. “Then what is it?”

<Activating skill: Summoner’s Mark>

<Activating skill: The Engineer’s Sight>

“Find me the source.”

<Sleep more #[{![ It is too early.>

<It’s never early. But it is always late.>

<I’m gonna break this on your head if you don’t let me sleep more.>

<Come on &;#&-:. Get up!>

David came back to his senses with a voice of something shattering. “What was that? I heard unfamiliar voices? No, it was my voice. I was talking with someone. Someone I forgot.” David felt deep sorrow, he was missing that person. How can he miss someone he doesn’t even remember?

<Activating skill: Summoner’s Mark>

“Hide this memory from Luci. I don’t want him to be involved in this.” But why do I? Why do I want to keep Luci away from this? Then he got startled by a notification.

<Target found>

He decided to go and check. While he was walking, he thought about the voices. It was a natural conversation between two people who knew each other well. Who was he talking to? A friend or maybe a relative? When he arrived at the location, he saw a large store full of magical stones. Even without the skill, he could tell they are high rank items. He entered the store and searched around, checking the various jewelry pieces around him.

Then he saw it. On the very bottom shelf, in the furthest corner, lay a blood-red stone. Unlike the others around it, this one had hard, sharp edges... unprocessed and raw. A chain and a pair of small bells were attached to it. It was a keychain. David took the stone from the shelf. As he stood up, he came eye to eye with the store’s owner.

“Did you find what you were looking for?”

David looked at him with a confused look.

“I have been watching you ever since you entered my store. People came here to look at my stones without anything particular on their minds. But you were searching for something.” He looked at the stone David was holding. “I guess you found it.”

Come on David, make up a lie or he’s gonna think that you are crazy. David thought. “Oh yeah. My mother used to have a stone just like this. I’ve been searching for a long time, but I couldn’t find it anywhere.”

“The stone you’ve been holding is, despite its low ranking, super hard to grind. We couldn’t be able to give it a pretty shape. So, we decided to leave it the way it is.”

“That’s weird.”

“Yes, it is. Do you want to buy it?”

“Yes. I do.”

“Follow me; I will help you with the price.”

...

David left the store after buying it. He shook it to hear the sound of the bells. “It's just a random stone. Why did my skill lead me to it? Let’s see…”

<Activating skill: The Reader>

<Unknown-Rank>

“Unknown rank? That’s weird. Reader skill, Luci’s Wrath skill, and my Blessing skill are all unknown ranks. Those skills have more powerful effects than S-rank skills. If that’s the case, this stone is not a low rank. Maybe the stone’s rank is so high that ranking machines can’t measure it correctly? I wish I had some investigator-type skill, which could tell me what it does or where it came from.”

<Summon Lucid is nearby>

David turned his head and saw Luci from afar. When he walked up to him, he saw Luci. He wrote down a number and called.

“I guess I forgot to save my number to the phone.” David walked to the Luci while holding his vibrating phone.

Luci closed the phone when he saw David walking closer. “I’m lucky you know your own number. Or else I would get lost.” Luci replied with a sarcastic tone.

“So that man really fixed it.” David pointed out.

“Yeah. Apparently, this weapon also has a passive skill. Check it out.”

<Activating skill: The Reader>

<S-Rank>

<Dagger of Life Stealer>

<Blood collector: Each time this blade cuts through the skin and makes it bleed gives the user a 0.5% attack boost. Max boost that can be obtained by skill is 25%>

 “This sounds horrible.”

“And good at the same time. Boost doesn’t have an extra rule like needing to kill the target. So I can cut through the same thing multiple times until I reach the cap.”

“This sounds even more horrible.” David left out a deep sigh and looked at Luci for a little while. “Are you sure that you can double wield?”

“I don’t know. I can’t tell until I try. Also…” Luci showed his phone screen, “I’ve done some research. Apparently, we need to create an account to join the crack hunts. This website shows available cracks. Also, you can filter them by their ranks, types, and even extra stuff like being starter-friendly. Long story short, I've already found one for tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow? Isn’t it too early? You know, we can hang out a little while and discover stuff about our skills.”

“You are not giving up, aren’t you? You said that you will be lifting my curse? Also, what’s that?” Luci was looking at the stone David had been holding.

“Oh, this? I found it cool and bought it. It wasn’t even expensive. It can also be used as a keychain.”

“That’s weird. I have no memories of you buying it.”

“Oh… I tried my skill’s 'hide memory' part. It wasn’t an important memory, so I just tried to use it.”

Luci looked at him like he didn’t buy it. Still, he didn’t ask more questions.

“So, we're going to the crack tomorrow. Yeah…”

David had an uneasy feeling inside, but didn’t let it take him over. This time, it was different. Luci was on his side. “Let’s find a restaurant first, we can create the account while we're eating.”

“I want pizza.”

“Deal.”
