REGENEX Part 1

CHAPTER 6 - A

CHAPTER 6 - A

May 19, 2025

Jim stepped over the threshold of his living quarters.  There was nothing truly noteable.  It was more modest than he thought it would be, especially compared to the grandeur that was the rest of the shelter.  There was a simple couch in the living area with a tv and a small coffee table.  There was a bookshelf against the wall filled with books that he had no recollection of.  The books on subjects that he knew next to nothing about.  To his left was a little kitchenette with a tiny island separating the kitchen from the living room.  Next to the kitchen was a small bathroom with a tub shower combination, toilet and sink with mirror.  Last was his bedroom, there was a full size bed and two makeshift windows. Upon closer inspection he would note these windows as computer screens that could project any image he wanted.  Jim also noticed the tablet that Simon was referring to on the wall between the bathroom and the bedroom.

Having seen the bathroom, it occurred to Jim just how badly he needed to use it.  Here's my contribution! He thought sarcastically.  After using the bathroom he could almost smell himself, he needed a shower.

Inspecting his body suit, he started feeling around.  Surely there was a way to remove it.  So he did what he felt would be obvious and used his finger to trace the stripe from his chest to his torso.  Almost like magic, his suit briefly glowed green and the nano-particles retracted, they began to separate from his body and swirled from collar to foot back into a vent over head.  Where do they go, where do they come from? He thought to himself.  He then stood in the same hospital type outfit he woke up in.  He further disrobed manually and tossed the clothes on the sink. He'd figure the laundry situation out later.

He looked at the shower and there was a touch screen against the same wall as the shower head.  He stepped in and navigated through the few various menus until he found what he figured would be temperature control.  There was an adjustable Five minute timer.  Smirking at the thought of only five minutes, he found his way to disabling the timer.  He wasn't sure where the soap was, but knew hot water alone was better than nothing.  He pressed the start button on the screen and water began to pour from the shower head.  The sensation was like no other.  He felt as though this was his first time experiencing hot water in a long time, if ever.  He had no real way of knowing yet.  He was enjoying the hot water and scrubbing himself.  The water stopped, he looked up at the shower head then at the screen.  He had no clue what was wrong.  Five seconds later, the shower head began to dispense what smelled like liquid soap.  He quickly put his head and the rest of his body under the stream of liquid soap. Still being sprayed with it, he scrubbed every last square inch of himself.  Thirty seconds later, the hot water resumed.  He rinsed himself off.  He stood there for another couple of minutes before using the screen to turn the water off.  Looking around through wet hair dripping in his face, he realized there was no towel present.  He looked back at the screen and navigated through the menus again.  He found a drying option and pressed it.  The panels on the walls of the shower rotated and warm air began to blow from all of them.  He spun around and mostly dried himself.  He turned this feature off and stepped from the shower.  He had no comb so he used his fingers and fixed his hair.  He decided to check his bedroom to see if there was anything clean to put on.

He found a wardrobe in the bedroom.  In the wardrobe he found additional clothes much like he had to begin with.  After reclothing himself he approached the mounted wall tablet.  Feeling around the edges of the tablet it appeared he could remove it and did so.  It was apparently mounted on a charging device.  Jim carried the tablet over to the couch and sat down.  He wasn't sure how much energy he had left in him, but he knew he at least had to see what the tablet offered.

Jim turned the tablet on with a button he found on the side. The Regenex logo appeared on screen.  Jim tapped the screen a couple of times and nothing happened, he then swiped up and the screen changed.  He really didn't know what he was looking at or what any of it meant.  Of the many options available, he found system information.  He clicked into it.  Before him were more options that he didn't know or understand, he backed out feeling a little defeated, but at this point, he was too tired to care.  He pressed the sleep button again and the tablet turned off.  He put the tablet back on the wall.  He sat down on the couch again and found a remote to the TV.

Navigating through the menus, it appeared there was a massive collection of all things TV and cinema related.  He didn't really have much interest in entertainment considering the questions he still had about what happened to everything.  Finding a menu with related news stories, he found himself skimming through most of it, looking at the thumbnails and titles.  Curiosity had him and he skimmed through searching for anything that seemed like the beginning of when everything started to take a turn for the worst.  The only thing he could find were ominous sounding titles.  "World leaders seek resolutions, find none."  "Streets in chaos as the threat of martial law looms."  "End of humanity as we know it?"  He didn't need to watch more than a minute of any of them to understand what was happening.  He witnessed brief glimpses of government entities fighting over the smallest of things, unable to reach agreements over the simplest of things.  He saw street interviews of everyday people becoming more and more agitated by the complete lack of empathy by the very people they elected to lead them.  Some were crying, some were angry, some seemed to be emotionally numb to it all.  Just about every interview all had a similar theme amongst all the disagreements, a strong desire for peace.

The videos were all about similar topics, there was the occasional news blip about important milestones for local businesses.  He saw stories about local communities coming together in spite of it all, just trying to create their own form of hope.  There were even a couple of people who labeled themselves "Doomsday Preppers".  They gave a brief tour of all the supplies they were stocked up on, different tools they had, rudimentary backup power supplies.  He thought to himself about the shelter he found himself in, and couldn't help but wonder if anybody else out there had been as intelligent, engineering, or invented as Simon claimed to be.

He then saw videos with very ominous sounding titles.  These titles very much suggested that the arguing between governments had come to a head.  Various leaders proclaiming their nuclear power, and their complete lack of fear in using them, even if it meant harming a percentage of their own population.  A very common thing heard by all officials of all countries was a very troubling phrase, "Collateral damage".  Is that really all the governments ever cared about their own citizens?

Jim found some of the more recent news clips.  Announcements of world leaders barricading themselves in the private shelters with mass protesting at every doorstep.  People all chanting in unison to end the conflicts.  Some people were praying, some people were picketing.  The protests one by one began to turn violent.  Pepper spray and billy clubs turned into riot shields and rubber bullets.  The protest carried on.  The rubber bullets weren't stopping the protest and more lethal measures were implemented.  Bullets began to ring out from both sides.  People were collapsing on the ground in puddles of blood.  The national guards of all countries were involved in quelling the protests with no sign of an end.  The bodies began to stack up on both sides of the barricades, whatever was left of them anyway.

The videos started to show widespread devastation and all of the carnage that ensued.  Turns out that nuclear war wasn't even necessary for that so called collateral damage had begun to take its toll.  Martial law had been fully declared by that point but no one cared.  The world had devolved into total chaos, the rule of law had been abandoned by everyone and everything.  People in the streets were being gunned down by military personnel for simply being in the wrong street, walking too close to a barricade, barely even a warning had been given before the civilians were gunned down in cold blood.

Then the news took a turn for the worse.  Nuclear missiles had been launched.  Ghost missiles.  They weren't even detectable until the possibility of identifying the source was impossible as they were already on a trajectory.  More missiles appeared on the radar or news stations.  Every major power on earth had launched seemingly every missile they had.  News reporters in their offices were watching the missiles traveling, horrified at the realization that they would most likely soon be dead.  news reporters had pulled out their phones and began calling loved ones.  People on the street were holding each other, sobbing uncontrollably, the fear and reality of what was coming began to set in.  There was footage of mass crime being committed, unspeakable acts of horrors that humans with a soul shouldn't even be capable of.  All of the world's religious leaders guiding their respective flocks in mass gatherings to prepare for the end.  There was footage of people taking their own lives with a variety of justifications.

One last video was available to watch.  The title was intense.

"The End is Here. Footage of live streamed nuclear strike."  Jim went through a brief moment of not wanting to see it.  He knew he had to though.  Jim played the final news clip.

The stream opened to a view of some hilly region in a desert.  The host of the stream was narrating

"Here we are, my guys and girls." He was a combination of excited and guarded.
