Chapter 2: Just a Game, Right?

Chapter 2: Just a Game, Right?

May 19, 2025

Stevie’s P.O.V.

I looked around my room. My eyes laid on my phone charger but my phone was no longer being plugged in. I slapped my forehead in annoyance. That's right, I left it downstairs after convincing myself to get off of the phone. I sighed and looked for a weapon. That means I have a dead phone downstairs.

I do have a house phone downstairs but I have to get to it first. My hands grabbed an empty glass vase. I know I should have had some type of better protection but it never really crossed my mind until now. I got out of my bed and began to tiptoe to my door. Lola looked at me with fear and worry. “I will be right back,” I mouthed to her.

I slowly cracked open my door and looked through. So far I had not seen anyone but my lights looked to be on downstairs. I closed the door and gripped the vase tightly in anger. Whoever is downstairs is acting like they pay the light bill in this house. I took a deep breath.

Okay, so I have better weapons downstairs and know the layout more than anyone here. So I have an advantage. I will need to get downstairs and grab a weapon without anyone seeing me. I also have to grab the house phone.

Good

I quietly left my room and quietly closed the door behind me. I slowly walked down the hallway andI tip-toed my way down the stairs, praying that the olive green carpet on them made my footsteps less noticeable to someone's ears.

So far, I do not see or hear anyone. My eyes laid on my kitchen. On the counter in its block was my knife set and beside it, my house phone.

Okay, you can do this

I slowly walked to the kitchen and towards the counter. The moment I made it to the counter, my hands grabbed the biggest knife and the house phone. As I heard footsteps I quickly tiptoed towards the pantry. Hoping that no one could hear me.

I slowly opened the door. The moment the door creeped, my eyes widened.

Fuck

In seconds I found a hand grab my wrist   and bend it back causing me to drop my knife. Before I could scream a voice spoke out. “You are going to get yourself killed.” My eyes looked ahead at its owner of the raspy voice only to widen once more this night. The one and only, Luan. “Now, tell me where I am? How come the streets are frozen in time? No screaming, no zombies, just everything, normal.”

He killed a lot of people in his game. Even his own family members. Who is to say that I would be no different? I have to play it safe.“You are at my house,” I said. He let me go.

“Are you twisted?” I shook my head.

“I am not a zombie if that's what you think and no one here is a zombie either..”

“No one here? Is this some type of safe zone?”

“We are in my world. A much different world than yours.” His brows furrowed.

“You're playing with me right? Something one of those twisted mother fuckers would do to make sure I didn't kill them.”

I'm screwed!!!

“Look, I can show you the game.”

“Fuck this. How about I kill you and find someone else who can tell me the truth? There should be more people in this safezone right?”

“But I'm serious-”

“You’re about to die.” My eyes looked down at the floor and found the knife I dropped before looking back at him. “Now tell me the truth.” I quickly reached for the knife but he got to it first. He swung the knife towards me causing me to dodge. To my luck, he missed, which was rare.

I ran out of the kitchen and up the stairs. He probably is more pissed off than before. Especially now that he has to go up stairs, one of his weaknesses because of his right knee. I ran to my room and locked the door. I located the fearful Lola before looking at the window. Would it be smart to go through the window and walk on the roof or should we hide? Before I could figure out what to do my door burst open, nearly breaking off the hinges. My mouth dropped open.

MY DOOR!

CHARACTER OR NOT, HE HAS GONE TOO FAR! My brows furrowed. “Mother fucker, I just bought this house a month ago and you are already breaking shit!” I made my way towards him. He did the same. Before he could swing his knife I kicked him in his balls. His eyes widened as he dropped to his knees and held his crotch in pain. He groaned while I took the knife and placed my lips near his ear. “Welcome to the real world Luan. Now, next time you break something I am breaking your ass.”

Thirty Minutes Later, Stevie's Living room

Luan and I sat across from each other on opposite couches. His glare stayed while I sat with my legs crossed and a granola bar in my hand. I took a bite of it. “Are you going-” Luan started but I put a finger up. I swallowed the granola bar before speaking.

“On the tv is your game. There you can find out what I am talking about.” He turned his head and looked at the screen.

“My game?” He mocked.

“Yes, your game.”

“It's just a title screen-"

“Press A”

“Really?”

“Yes”. He picked up the controller and pressed A. In seconds the story menu popped up. His eyes widened in shock. One of the options you could select had been Luan and his sister, Eliana. He looked at me.

“Everything I experienced was some fucked up game?” His eyes no longer seemed angry, nor did they seem to be in surprise, if anything it was hurt and fear. “The twisted, the ones I loved, they all died and I killed them. All of that sick shit was some type of game?” His eyes began to glosson. “All of this shit-” he shook his head and stood up. “How can I even make sense of this?” I stood up.

“It may have been a game, Luan but those were your real life experiences,” I said.

“Real or not, I was written to have that shitty life and lose the people I love. How can I just get over that?!”

“It's not the fact that you have to get over it. It's the fact that you will have to learn how to move on from it.” His brows furrowed. “What I am saying is that you are here now. Not in that world. You no longer have to suffer-”

“But my sister-”

“Ends up meeting some new people and being safe. Apparently that is found out in another character's story. For now you need to breathe.”

“I'm happy she is safe but-”

“She’s living her own story now. It's time you live yours.”

“You are talking to me as if I am a child.” My eyes widened.

Was I really?

“I am sorry. I guess I am used to talking to children five days a week.”

“This world we are in, how do we get my sister here?” I sighed. “What?”

“Luan, I don't even know how you got here. How am I supposed to figure out how to bring her here?” He didn't say anything. Instead he stared at me with a blank expression. I shook my head.

“Luan, I have work in a few hours. For now just take a shower and sleep in the guest room. I have some clothes my boy cousin left here. You two look to be the same size.”

“I am a random man in your house and you do not seem to have a problem with that.”

“Look, I'm tired and have to deal with enough already. I might as well accept your existence now instead of later on. Now are you resting or what-” my eyes widened as I saw what seemed to be blood seeping from the bottom of Luan’s shirt. I looked at him to see him staring at his shirt as well. “That cut your sister made-”

Stevie Lee has an amazing job, a ride-or-die group of friends, a judgmental cat, and the world's worst dating history. So when one of her friends convinces her to spend $200 on a video game system to play a game because "the characters are hot," she expects eye candy, not heartbreak.

But in five hours, one emotional breakdown, and a melted ice cream sundae later, Stevie wakes up to a crashing sound in her apartment and a strange, very real man who doesn't belong here. Did Stevie just cry her way into another reality? Or is the hot, fictional, tragic man now in her living room?
