Jim opened his eyes before the sound of the eight in the morning wake-up call. He looked over at Veronica who was still sound asleep, he couldn't help but acknowledge her beauty. Her red hair cascaded over her eyes, her lip quiver slightly from some dream she must be having. Jim soaked in this perfect moment.
The overhead alarm began to sound and Veronica slowly opened her green eyes. She looked up at Jim very groggy, there was a small, sleepy smile on her face. Those captivating green eyes peered at him lovingly through streaks of red hair.
"Good morning." Veronica said continuing to smile
"Good morning, sunshine." Jim replied, also smiling. "How did you sleep?"
"I had you next to me, it was the best sleep I've had in a long time." Veronica began to yawn and stretch. She smoothly used her need to stretch as an excuse to hold Jim.
"Do we tell anyone about our re-kindling?" Jim asked. Veronica took the question seriously and responded.
"Well..." She sat up more in bed, her white night shirt slipping up a little bit against her chest. "I don't have a problem with people knowing, however..." Veronica paused again. "There's a very real reason why I didn't fully let on how much I remembered."
Jim looked at her, acknowledging her truth.
"I don't have a problem with Connor and Lydia knowing, but Simon, that's a different story." She looked at Jim with mild concern. "How do we all have some degree of amnesia, but he doesn't seem to have any, at least, nothing noticeable." Veronica looked down at her shirt and adjusted it, then looked back up at Jim. I can't put my finger on it, but something just feels off about Simon. Especially after what we saw and heard last night. It was just too weird."
All Jim could do was nod in agreement, she spoke only truth, and she spoke everything that Jim already had in his own mind.
"I don't want Simon to know how much we remember yet. If there is some kind of ulterior motive that we are all unaware of yet, I don't want him to know anything more than he does. Not until I've talked to Lydia about this." Veronica looked Jim right in the eyes. "I think you should talk to Connor about this as well. You need to find out everything he remembers. The four of us need to be on the same page until we know for sure, whether or not we can trust Simon. He just knows so much and we know so little. There must be a reason for it, I just know there is. Maybe the reason is completely innocent, perhaps not. It's too early to know anything yet. We all just need to somehow coordinate an observation of Simon. He just can't know."
Veronica finished talking and took a breath.
"I agree with everything you just said. I completely agree with you." Jim replied. "I don't know exactly how I'm gonna get Connor alone, to talk to him about everything. I also have no clue how you'll talk to Lydia, but I'll leave that up to you. For now, you just need to make sure Lydia knows that we saw them last night, and we have their backs."
Veronica nodded in agreement. She leaned over and gave Jim a big kiss. Jim kissed back.
"Let's get dressed." Veronica announced as she disappeared from the room.
Jim could only assume she went to the bathroom. Jim stretched and heard Veronica from the bathroom.
"Your turn!"
Jim got up from bed and started making his way to the bathroom. Veronica stood in the kitchen in her sleek, perfectly form fitting uniform. Jim went into the bathroom and assembled his own uniform before meeting back up with Veronica.
"So, how do you wanna do this? Do we leave together, or one after another." asked Jim
"Let's just walk out together. I'm sure everyone is in the food hall by now." Veronica paused and met Jim's eyes. "I almost don't care if Simon knows that we have re-kindled ourselves. For all he knows, we just naturally fell for each other again. That doesn't mean that our memories have returned."
Jim nodded, he could only admire Veronica's intelligence.
"Then we walk out together." Jim said, smiling.
They both kissed and left Jim's room.
Jim and Veronica emerged from his room and found an empty bannister, still overlooking a radiation meter against the far wall. The radiation was still at a very high level. They both went down the stairs and approached the door to the food hall.
"Let's do this." Veronica exclaimed.
They both walked into the food hall and only found Simon sitting at the table. His hands were folded, and his head was down. They both gave each other a brief look and continued approaching the table. Simon eventually raised his head as they got closer.
"Ah, Jim, Veronica. Good to see you. I trust you both slept well." Simon was very pleasant in his greeting.
"Like a baby." Jim remarked.
Simon smiled.
"How about you Veronica, did you sleep well?" Simon asked
Veronica simply nodded.
"Where are Connor and Lydia?" Veronica asked.
"I'm sure they'll be down soon." Simon seemed unfazed by their lack of presence. "Caffeine, anyone?"
Jim and Veronica sat down quickly. This physical cue spoke louder to Simon than words.
"Which will it be today Jim, coffee or tea?" asked Simon casually.
"I'll go with coffee this morning." responded Jim.
Simon obliged and procured two coffees and a single tea for himself. Jim and Veronica both picked up their coffees and prepared them.
The door opened behind them and in walked Connor and Lydia. They both strolled inside casually. Jim detected the slightest hint of secrecy about them, he knew Veronica had to have picked up on it as well. Simon didn't seem to notice, he was already sipping at his tea.
"Sorry we're late." Connor spoke quickly.
"It's my fault..." Lydia said. "I had him show me how to do something in my room."
"No problem at all." Simon said pleasantly and unfazed. "There really isn't much of a sense of 'late' in this place, is there? All we have in the world here is time." Simon spoke, matter-of-factly.
Connor and Lydia took their place at the table and two coffees popped up, they prepared their coffee and began to drink. In the center of the table, a very large batch of Pancakes, eggs, and bacon appeared with all of the condiments they needed. Everyone grabbed a plate and began eating.
"So what's on the agenda for today, Simon?" Connor spoke up.
"Actually, there really isn't much on the agenda. I would say some basic upkeep, and monitoring." Simon spoke after eating a fork of eggs. "If anything I would say that all of you should be present in different areas to further learn how things work. As for me, I'll probably be by the main computer keeping an eye on things.
"Fair enough." Connor replied. He turned and looked at Jim. "Jim, did you have any interest in coming with me to the power room? I wanted to show you something important."
Jim was a little caught off guard by this. He and Veronica talked about doing this very thing, but he hadn't expected it so soon.
"Yeah, just lemme finish breakfast first, huh?" Jim responded coolly and casually.
Veronica turned to Lydia.
"I was also wondering if you would accompany me to the plant area. I could use your medical expertise in checking on plant health." Veronica spoke quickly.
Lydia, looking at her nodded her head, Lydia did, however, have just a tinge of suspicion in her face. Nothing too noticeable, at least not to Simon who was still busy eating.
"Great, after breakfast then?" Veronica confirmed.
Lydia again, nodded her head.
Breakfast continued on. Connor, Lydia, Veronica, and Jim were all making small talk. Talking, laughing, smiling, and simply getting lost in conversation. Simon sat to himself, not really saying much. Simon would occasionally acknowledge the conversation with a chuckle, but he was obviously lost in his own thoughts, this was apparent to everyone else.
Breakfast concluded, and everyone began to head toward the door. Upon entering the main area, Simon walked over to the main computer. The radiation readings had Simon's undivided attention. Nothing had changed. Connor reminded Jim about the power room and Veronica started leading Lydia to the agriculture room. Just before entering, Jim and Veronica both looked at each other. This was their opportunity to bring Connor and Lydia up to speed, and they both knew it. With a final look, the four of them disappeared behind both doors with Simon at the main computer.
