Pumpkin Sisters (NV)

Doing What Siblings Do Best!

Doing What Siblings Do Best!

Jun 07, 2025

Exactly 1 month has passed since Oak, Gaia, and Winter were left in a mossy undergrowth cave by a stranger crow. Oak felt satisfied by putting her trust into a suspicious hooded crow that helped lead the way through the wilderness. It goes to show that getting thrown out was traumatic. She still has trust issues from that situation and didn't know whom to trust, alongside the other two, but she trusted her instinct to follow the crow, since she remembered it from the day before.

That's a pretty dangerous way to trust, but she was helpless and didn't know what to do after getting unexpectedly thrown out.

Ever since, she continued to ponder why they were thrown out. It just didn't make sense to her, but she also didn't let it bog her down, as she thought of doing something very special for the others.

It was their 1-month anniversary of awakening and meeting each other!

Oak was very excited and was the first to wake up out of the trio. She walked outside of the cave and looked up at the sky. It was a brand new day, the sun was rising and shining from the opposite side of the hill, and there were birds flying off in the distance. The beautiful calmness of the forest was very prevalent, especially during the morning hours.

A thought popped into Oak's mind, She wondered what kind of surprise gift she should give to Gaia and Winter. She pondered by walking a bit off into the distance from the cave, and then AH HA! An idea popped into her mind, and she went to be creative with the gift she wanted to find or make.

"I got an idea!" She shouted and ran off.

She was gone, both Gaia and Winter woke up to Oak shouting something, but they didn't know what she yelled. Gaia was a light sleeper who didn't like being woken up by loud, sudden sounds. The pattering of Oak's leg stubs could be heard as she ran off, and it got quieter over time.

Gaia groaned, sounding irritated by the loud sound of Oak's steps.

"Wha?" Winter mumbled as she slowly sat up and wondered what the loud commotion was.

Somewhere in the forest, Oak was sitting on a rock. She decided to build some kind of cute toy doll made out of tree twigs, moss, pebbles, and acorns. Ever since they left the junkyard, Oak has slowly started to learn more about both Gaia's and Winter's interests and favorite items. She found out that Winter likes cute little trinkets and toys, so this well-made doll would entice her the most.

"Hmm..."

She tried her best to make sure the doll wouldn't fall apart in her hands, but finding sticky stuff like glue or honey was difficult. It was also resources that Oak had never heard of before or used before to make something. Gaia, on the other hand, was fascinated by flora and fauna; she showed interest in beautiful flowers and trees in their environment. Almost everyday during evening, the trio would spend time looking at the sunsets on higher elevated ground. She would also try to go looking for wild plants, but Oak was often worried that they would stumble upon wild predators.

"Done! I'll give this to Winter!"

Oak got up off the rock and went searching again for something else, and now it was Gaia's surprise gift.

"Uhh, what does Gaia like again? How did I forget quickly?!" She slapped her forehead.

Both Gaia and Winter walked outside of the cave and saw that the sun was higher in the sky now. It was still morning, but Oak was missing for more than 20 minutes. She just recklessly ran off by herself, and it made the others very worried. They often stayed together as a team, as they were still vulnerable little pumpkins out in the wild.

Gaia took up the role of making sure they all stayed together, as Oak was gaining the traits of recklessness and stubbornness in her personality. Oak started to show a lot more independence out of the trio, so she often would try to sneak away or do something on her own.

"Oak?" Winter mumbled.

"Where did they go?" Gaia started rapidly looking left and right.

"I don't know, let's go find her," Winter shrugged and started walking.

While running rampantly through the forest, Oak had discovered a new location that she had never seen before. She was being reckless and too curious, as she was kinda far from the cave now. There was a garden-like area up ahead in the direction she was running. It had a variety of flowers like sunflowers, daisies, turnips, orchids, lilies, poppies, and venus flytraps. She could spot it out easily.

"Whoa!"

She could only guess that maybe this garden was free and not owned by anyone. The flowers looked rich and beautiful. She walked down the long hill, as the elevation of the ground kept descending, and she was able to get up close. Pumpkins don't have noses, but Oak tried her best to sniff out the flowers.

"She would love something from here!" She grinned. However, now she had to remember what type of flower Gaia liked, as she had her favorite specific flower.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The two started walking into the forest, It was so beautiful out today. They just hoped that no stranger or predator had attacked or eaten Oak. There were a few instances where the three had to defend themselves with their lives from wild predators out in the wild. It was more of instances when they were all separated, but were able to reach each other in time to save each other.

Gaia was able to conclude that maybe it was an important day, and that's why Oak had run off. But why did she run off, though? "I forgot! Oak may have gone out to look for a surprise gift." Gaia realized.

"A Surprise gift?"

Gaia started thinking about the time and date. Was it morning? Was it noon now? Was it afternoon? She also didn't know what today was or the exact time, but she ended up hearing Oak ramble on about something important yesterday. Oak had somewhat spoiled the surprise about a special day.

"But, how did she know-" Gaia queried.

"Maybe, she found out by the days and nights we've stayed in the cave?" Winter shrugged.

"But, we never learned how to... uhh... what is it called? Counting?" Gaia shouted in slight frustration. She just didn't understand. Maybe Oak just picked a day and didn't care about the accuracy of the time and date. But it was a special day, Oak didn't discuss the importance of the date with Gaia and Winter yet, but she will when she finishes making and finding their gifts.

"Let's split up. If she's looking for a surprise gift, we should do the same." "But, be careful!" Gaia held a thumbs-up towards Winter.

Winter nodded in agreement, but was nervous about wandering alone in the forest. Winter was dependent on the other two; she didn't have a lot of independence yet, which was ok. Because they were still vulnerable, little pumpkins wandering around and risking playing with their fate.

The wilderness was calm and nice, but it also came with dangers. They weren't exactly familiar with other animals or beings, so staying close to each other helped and benefited them in the wild.

Oak continued looking through this garden she had found, she started to examine a specific flower that stood out from the others. It was very pretty, but Oak didn't know this flower had a self-defense mechanism to it. It was one of the flowers that weren't commonly in a garden, but some humans wanted it in their garden to keep away flying bugs.

"Ah! This is..." She curiously touched the Venus Flytrap, and now it activated its self-defense mechanism. It took a bite of Oak's hand when she reached for a touch. She started to scream out of terror upon feeling what the flower was doing, and she was lucky enough to pull her hand back.

"M-Maybe that's not the right flower~" Oak was nervous at the sight of this flower.

About 15 minutes had passed, and both Gaia and Winter returned to where they had stopped earlier in the forest. They both had the gifts they created or found held right behind a stack of leaves they formed. They couldn't wait to surprise each other, but now they were worried. Oak hadn't shown up at all or found them; they at first assumed she had returned to the cave, but she didn't. Gaia's face went from happy to serious, she ended up looking around the forest feeling paranoid.

Winter frowned when she realized Oak didn't show up or come across where they were in the forest.

Gaia: "Hey, stay here, I'll go try to big sis."

Winter: "Wait! I-I don't want to be left alone..."

Gaia: "Just hide underneath a log or something, there aren't any predators around."

Winter shuddered, "Yeah, but what about the vultures, the claw things, and-"

"I'll be back! I promise! Big sister might be lost!" Gaia shouted back.

Gaia ran off into the distance, leaving behind Winter, whom she trusted would hide away if a predator did happen to come roaming by. More time had passed by, she hadn't even gotten the chance to see where Oak had gone this morning after going to sleep last night.

Oak took a step back after recklessly messing with the Venus Flytrap in this garden. She wondered if this garden had any Phalaenopsis (Moth Orchids). She trusted herself that this was Gaia's favorite flower. There were also different colors of this orchid flower, so she hoped this garden had the right color.

Gaia kept running and running, it felt like searching for Oak would take forever, as she was terrified about Oak probably getting run over by a lawn mower, run over by a car, taken by a vulture, pounded by a bear, chased by a wolf, or other worse-case scenarios. Having a map would've been easier for these three, but getting one meant they would have to visit a gas station or store. She finally found the perfect orchid that had a pinkish and purplish hue all around the petals and a healthy stem. She reached and pulled one from the grassy ground.

"Oak! Oak! Come here!" Gaia shouted as she spotted her standing in a garden field of flowers. She was relieved to see she wasn't dead. But she wandered too far, it felt like another journey to Gaia.

Just in time, Oak started to make her way out of the garden, but the rustling of a nearby bush caught her attention. She was nervous, as a wild squirrel had appeared from the bushes and started running into the garden. Oak laughed nervously, as it started to catch up to her, she didn't even decide to get a head start run. Despite having a tough hard shelled exterior to their body, this squirrel could still scratch them up to bits or bite them. It was instantly locked onto Oak as soon as it realized it wasn't alone.

"Rrahhh!" It growled, warning Oak and Gaia to back off and run away. The two may have stumbled nearby the squirrels' home, nest, or favorite area to search for nuts. Both Oak and Gaia's eyes shot big as the squirrel started to run after them.

"AHHHH!!!" Oak and Gaia screamed.

The two scrambled away, after the squirrel chased them down for who knows how long, but they successfully got away. It was time, Oak had spilled the beans as to why she woke up excited this morning. She made it quick and simple, as she couldn't wait to see Gaia and Winter's reaction to what she gifted them. The others couldn't wait as well, but Gaia was in a slightly bad mood. Oak started to feel pretty guilty for wandering off like that, as she could've gotten injured or worse. Plus, Gaia and Winter would've been left alone in the forest without her if something bad had happened.

"So, guess what today is?" Oak put on a big smile as she watched Gaia and Winter. They were all settled down in a small sitting circle. They had their piles of leaves covering up each gift neatly right behind them. "Why did you run away?! You know we're supposed to stay together!" Gaia yelled in a worried tone.

Oak frowned, now knowing what she did was pretty idiotic and very reckless. She realizes that she made a mistake by making herself more vulnerable, which was true. She ended up taking this moment to apologize before revealing the gifts.

"I-I'm sorry, I just wanted to go look for a gift for the first time we've met each other," She frowned while looking at the ground.

"Today is an important day?" Winter guessed, and she was right.

"Yes! Well, I just picked a date. It's been a while since I first saw you two, and..."

"And what?" Gaia crossed her arms.

"I want to call this day our sibling anniversary! We're like a family, aren't we?" Oak jumped with excitement.

Both Gaia and Winter had nodded their heads upon realizing what Oak meant. They never realized that they were pretty much siblings up until this point. It was such a cozy moment between the three, and Oak just confirmed their special day as something real. It made sense as they've heavily relied on each other ever since they were thrown out of their original home.

"Alright, who's going first?" Gaia broke the small silence and rubbed her hands.

"Mee!!" Oak shouted as she ran over to the leaf pile and signaled to her sisters to see if they were ready to see their gifts. She swung her arms up and around to clear the pile of leaves, and she pulled up the bouquet of pink and purplish orchids. Gaia's eyes lit up with excitement and awe at what Oak had gotten her.

"Thank you, Oak! I love Orchids!" Gaia smiled, hugging the bouquet.

"Hahaha, I was struggling to find it at first, but that scary plant almost got me," Oak laughed with a fear of Venus Flytraps now.

"My turn!" Winter shouted.

She slowly uncovered her pile of leaves. Both Winter and Oak had given each other the same kind of gift, which was a handmade toy doll. That meant they could play dolls with each other for hours on end. Winter compared her doll with Oak's, and she was the sibling who enjoyed being neat. She didn't want to rush the creative process of building a toy doll from scrap.

"Thanks, Lil Sis!" Oak hugged Winter.

The three continued showing off what they had created or gathered. This day was going perfectly, as Oak completed her goal of surprising her siblings. They were pretty much confirmed as a close-knit family, despite their rough circumstances. For the rest of the day, they made a trip to another part of the forest, where they had found the most perfect spot and view for stargazing and watching the sunset. This was their favorite activity ever since they were dropped off at the cave.

I thought of typing this when writing this, lol.

[If only the trio knew about computers and the internet, they could search this interesting website: https://www.timeanddate.com/]

It would be useful, so they could remember their actual harvesting date. Maybe they'll find out later on.
