Early in the morning, it was still quite pleasantly cold. People were most likely just waking up, but Vincent Nyeste was about to go home. He was a young though not quite energetic man with messy long black hair that slightly covered his yellowish-green eyes.
His train just arrived, so without hesitation, he jumped up and sat down at the first available free space. Though it did not require any sort of fighting, as in the cart there were four other people only.
The moment his butt hit the seat, he closed his eyes and dozed off. He felt a light tung as the train left the station and started moving.
"Finally... I will have some free time for myself... The first thing I will do when I get home is take a hot, relaxing shower, and then I will sleep."
He thought as he slowly lowered his head. Though he was not yet sleeping, he was in a completely dozed-off state. He could still feel the acceleration of the train, and then he was expecting to feel how they reached the maximum speed, and they would stop acceleration.
However, instead of that, he felt as if the train was bouncing slightly, and started hearing a strange loud noise, as if he was sitting behind some sort of engine. Vincent quickly shook his head and opened his eyes.
"You are finally awake!"
Much to his shock, he was not on the train he had boarded moments ago, instead, it seemed like he was sitting in some sort of military vehicle surrounded by four other men who were wearing military uniforms. The one sitting in front of him was the one who spoke up.
As Vincent quickly looked around, trying to understand the situation, he noticed that the soldiers seemed calm. Then finally, he looked down at his body. He thought that he would be bound and transported away, however, much to his surprise, he also wore the exact same outfit as the other soldiers, a slightly muddy green coat, and trousers, along with a boot.
What surprised him most, was the fact that he had a hoister on his side, and he felt that it had a small pistol in it. Just like everyone else in the truck.
"To be honest, I am envious of you, Vincent... You can have such a relaxed nap while being on the way to our new assignment!"
The man sitting in front of him added with a light chuckle, however, Vincent did not react at all. He was just bluntly staring at his knees, trying to understand the situation.
He just dozed off on the train, and moments later, when he woke up he was in some sort of military vehicle, as a soldier travelling somewhere. And if it wasn't enough when he was about to finally calm down, something else happened.
Before his eyes, a floating blue rectangle appeared. For the first few seconds it was just blue and had no extra, however then, as if someone was typing, characters appeared, which gradually formed words and then sentences.
"Welcome, chosen soldier! Your statistics are being analysed, please stand by. In the meantime, you can choose your first skill! Chose wisely!"
Vincent rubbed his eyes, believing it was just some sort of illusion, though he was not yet certain that whatever he was currently experiencing was even real.
The strange text slowly vanished, and in its place, three cards appeared. Each had a picture at the top, while had some text below it. The very first one on the left side was an eye.
"Sharp-Eyed: Greatly enhances accuracy with any firearm! In addition, increases the ability to detect enemy or friendly units! (Skill gradually scales with each level)"
The second one, located in the middle, was a running stick figure.
"Nimble-Limbs: Greatly enhances speed, as well as increases reaction time! In addition, slightly increases stamina. (Skill gradually scales with each level)"
The third and final one was a shield with a plus sign in the middle.
"Chonky: Greatly increases endurance, increases overall strength, but slightly reduces speed. In addition, it provides a very low chance for low-velocity bullets to bounce off of the body, causing minimal damage. (Skill gradually scales with each level)"
The three cards hovered before Vincent's eyes, and even as he slightly turned his head, the cards kept floating before his eyes, obstructing his vision, though they were slightly see-through.
Vincent could only sigh. He really hoped that this was only a dream, and he would wake up back on the train soon, however, deep down, for some unknown reason, he felt that this was real.
"Hey, you alright?"
The soldier sitting in front of him spoke again, finally bringing him back to reality.
"Y-yeah... I was just thinking"
He replied and tried to look into the man's eyes, though the three cards were in the way. They were really annoying him, as a result, he finally gave in, and properly read their description.
"What the... If I am going to the front... I am neither fit nor strong... but above all else, I most likely have a terrible aim... I have never shot a gun before..."
Vincent debated in his head and eventually settled on the first one. He believed that with that he might have some chance of shooting someone, with the other he wouldn't be able to defend himself at all.
He slowly raised his hand from his knee, wanting to press his chosen skill, though he wanted to move as if he were stretching to not seem like an idiot, however at that very moment, all the other two cards vanished, and Sharp-Eyed was the only one remaining, though it also vanished a few moments later.
"Notice, a new skill acquired: Sharp-Eyed"
Another text popped up, though it was unlike the first one. It appeared as a whole, without the text being typed out. And then finally it too had vanished, letting Vincent finally see properly.
"Boys! We will be there in a few minutes!"
The furthest soldier shouted as he cracked his knuckles, as if he was ready for everything.
