"I want a divorce!"
"What?"
"Jack cheated on me!"
"What? I thought he was on a business trip?"
I gave a bitter laugh. "He's on a 'business trip' with his mistress!"
Early in the morning, these three sentences left Lucy stunned.
"Hold on. Let me get this straight. You're saying Jack cheated, and his so - called business trip is actually with his mistress? How did you find out?"
I threw my phone to Lucy. There was a post on Sarah's social media that she'd just shared that morning.
Jack was dragging a suitcase with one hand and holding Sarah's hand with the other. Sarah was beaming and wrote, "Off on an elopement!"
I'd added her on a whim, not expecting her to accept. Whether she knew it was me who added her didn't matter.
I said to Lucy, "Jack's on a three - day business trip. Can I get the divorce papers in three days?"
Lucy looked serious. "I'll draft them myself."
I nodded and told her, "Don't tell Ben."
Lucy was Ben's wife. I'd heard their relationship wasn't easy, and I'd met her through Jack. Unexpectedly, we'd become good friends over time.
Fate is really strange. Some people remain strangers even after a long time, while others become close in an instant.
"I know. Don't worry. Actually..."
"What is it?"
Lucy hesitated but then shook her head. "It's nothing. We'll talk about it later. How are you? Do you need me to stay with you?"
I declined and sighed with a sad smile. "I have a ten - o'clock flight. I'm going on a business trip too."
This is the adult world. You have to squeeze in time for your sorrows.
I gave Lucy all the photos I'd taken from Jack's phone and the backup of the dash - cam recordings, along with a detailed list of our property.
The only silver lining was that we didn't have kids.
Lucy was very efficient. By the afternoon when I got back from my business trip, she'd already drafted the divorce papers.
"Even though he's the one in the wrong, it's impossible to make him leave with nothing. But I'll try my best to get you the most benefits."
I opened my mouth to say something, but Lucy interrupted me. "Don't say you don't want it. He's the one who made a mistake, and he should make amends.
Even the money he gave to the other woman can be recovered. There has to be a price for his actions!"
I smiled faintly and hugged her. "I'll take it. I didn't say I wouldn't. Lucy, thank you."
She gently patted my back. "It's not a big deal. It's just a divorce. I'll be with you."
That night, Lucy and I drank glass after glass of wine.
We talked about the past, the future, our hopes, and our regrets. We ended up drunk and passed out on the carpet.
The next morning, I was woken up by my alarm.
I took a day off work and put on a light makeup.
Even though I was in a bad state, I had to go out. I was going to meet Jack.
I'm five years older than Jack. So, when he was 28, I was already 33.
He once told me that age would never be an issue between us.
However, later he said to his childhood friend, "I don't know why, but once Lily turned 30, I just feel she's... a bit off-putting."
After that, he had an affair with a woman who vaguely resembled me.
He gave me love and gave her physical intimacy, they think I won't find out.. That was until I presented him with the divorce papers.
I smiled and told him, "Actually, there's a great advantage to dating and marrying an older woman. That is, she can take risks and handle the consequences!"
