Yoshida Says It All

Meeting May's Rents

Meeting May's Rents

May 28, 2025

September has finally arrived. The leaves were falling, the weather was getting a little cooler.

Yoshida and May were walking to her parents' house. She thought to herself, 'What if Mom and Dad don't approve of him?'

Yoshida said, "I finally have the job. I don't start till Monday; I work at Walmart. Did I mention I also get a 50% discount on anything in the store?"

"No," she replied. "I wanna work at Saku-Neko, the place that sells sakura creme-filled desserts. I was told if you work there, you get a 75% discount."

"Lucky," Yoshida said. "Ah, well. 50% is better than 0%, except our discount involves everything in the store. I'm gonna get me some Kinder chocolate bars after my first paycheck."

"Are they good?"

"They are, especially if you freeze them." They saw 100 yen on the ground; Yoshida picked it up. "I'm gonna get you and me a Slurpee." They stopped at 7-Eleven. "Two green apple Slurpees please."

An Indian guy who was working there (Ankit) gave the two each a large Slurpee. Yoshida gave him the money in return; Ankit gave him some change. "I'll see you guys later," he said to the two teens.

Yoshida sipped his frozen drink. "So, tell me about your dad."

"He used to be a boxer. He retired with a 23-1 record. His first loss was against this tall Russian guy; he went back to fight him again, winning via decision. His other wins were by knockout."

"Oh, okay. I was wondering... How hard does he hit?" he asked.

"Fairly hard, almost like Francis Ngannou," the purple-haired maiden replied. "Most of his fights did end in knockout or TKO. Now, he just works as a construction worker, eating PayDay bars. He likes the chocolate PayDay bars."

"Now about your mom?"

"She inspired me to sing; I wanna be like LieandLie! Side note: She makes the best pork dumplings! That's what we're having tonight."

"You think they'll let me eat with them?" Yoshida asked.

"I don't know. They haven't liked my ex-boyfriend, so I wonder if they'll like you." May drank the last of her large Slurpee. "It's a shot in the dark."

Yoshida took another sip of his icy beverage. "They might like me. It just takes some getting used to."

"You don't understand; Dad's old-fashioned."

"I see." Yoshida took another sip. "So, what music does your mom sing?"

"She does Japanese music and Korean music," May answered. "She also does blues, soul, and rock."

She and Yoshida arrived at a yellow house, which was her parents'. "They're in here," she said, opening the door. "Good evening, Mom and Dad! My boyfriend's coming."

Her dad said, "Hopefully, he's not a dud like your ex. Couldn't stand that guy!"

Yoshida wiped his feet before walking in. "Hullo, May's parents. I'm Yoshida Akamura, your daughter's boyfriend."

Her dad shook his hand. "I have a good feeling about this guy. Do you work anywhere, Yoshida?"

"I started working at Walmart two weeks ago. I smell pork."

"Her mom is fixing dumplings," her dad replied. "And call me Yonatan."

"So, Yonatan, what's your ethnicity?"

"Hungarian and English. My father's Hungarian; my mother's English." Yonatan took out a chocolate PayDay. "I should probably find another candy bar to eat. Want a PayDay?"

"Yes sir. Thanks for the candy. Also, thanks for having me for dinner." Yoshida set said snack to the side.

"It's no trouble," Yonatan replied. "My last name is Szilveszter; my wife's name is Himiko."

"Good to hear. Anways, I have a question or two about your boxing career. Who was your toughest opponent?"

"This guy named Zhdan Idanovsky. He's a Russian boxer, and he was tall! He beat me via knockout. I went against him again and won by decision. I retired after that, with a 23-1 record. I tried MMA, but I couldn't keep up with the young cats there."

"I wanna be an MMA fighter," Yoshida said to Yonatan. "And a freelance handyman."

"There's a promotion that's looking for fighters; I believe it's called Rizin." Yonatan went to go get a bottle of water. "As soon as you get 18, you should sign."

"I might," Yoshida replied. "We should have a fight to test each other's strengths."

"Sure. Right after dinner," her father agreed.

May was setting the table. "He and my dad are gonna fight?! Dad has a bad back." She put the soy sauce and hoisin sauce in the middle of the table. "I should probably intervene."

Himiko replied, "He's not gonna say no to a fight. Best to leave it alone." She set the plates of dumplings on the table, with Yoshida's plate being piled up. "Dinnertime!"

Yoshida and Yonatan got to the table. Yonatan sighed in relief. "I should probably retire from my job -- I do have a lotta money."

Yoshida ate one of his dumplings. "Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow! So good! What's your secret?"

"If I told you, it wouldn't be a secret, but I'm gonna tell it anyway. The secret is love."

"Hmm. Kinda reminds me of my mom's cooking." Yoshida ate another one. "Have any chili...? Oh, there it is." He added some chili oil to his meaty pockets of dough. He ate two more at once.

"How long have you two known each other?" Himiko asked while scratching her purple hair.

"A month," Yoshida replied. "We met at Walmart, then we had Starbucks. She had the banana milk; I had the Americano. We both had pumpkin bread as well. How'd you guys meet?"

"We met at Skyline Chili in Ohio. He had the smoothest voice."

Yoshida ate the last of his dumplings. "So, we still having that fight?"

"The doctor said no," Yonatan replied. "He wants me to relax." He had a disappointed tone in his voice... "I was wanting to test my strengths too..."

"It's fine."

Himiko poured some sakura lemonade for the fam and her daughter's boyfriend. "Sakura lemonade, Yoshida? It's pretty good."

"Yes, ma'am." He took a glass and started drinking. "This is good!"

"Thank you," Himiko replied. "It's a family recipe."

Yoshida got up and put his cup in the dishwasher. "Well, thanks again for having me for dinner. I gotta go; I have homework to do."

"See you later," Himiko replied. "Thanks for coming!"

Yonatan said, "He's alright with me. He's better than that Chad guy you dated behind my back."

"How'd you know?" May chuckled nervously.

"I know everything. Glad you stopped dating him. He couldn't hold a job, he cheated on you..." Yonatan got up and fixed himself another plate of dumplings as Yoshida walked on into the night.
