It wasn’t the end.
“Are you okay Ruby-May?” The boy said to me. I finally open my eyes to see it was Austin Winslow. We have biology together. Austin has short blonde hair and is fairly tall. Austin is pale, he gets told that almost everyday. He and everybody else on the island call me by my first and last name, Ruby-May.
“Can you not talk?” Austin asked with a terrible attitude.
“Oh sorry, I’m just shocked.” I get up. “Are you infected?”
He looks at me. “Do I look infected?”
“You never know.” What is he doing here? “What are you doing here Austin?”
“It’s my parent’s store, they left me in charge so they could go get groceries. The second they left they got attacked.” Austin seemed to look unbothered by the situation.
“Do you not care that your parents are dead?”
“They aren’t dead.” Austin is dumb but I never expected him to be that dumb.
“It’s apocalyptic out there and you don’t seem to think once that your parents could be dead?” Now instead of him having the attitude, it was me.
“I’m telling you, there is no way they’re dead.” Said Austin. Suddenly out of nowhere an infected bumps into the glass. Their smile was wide, it looked like their jaw had dislocated. It wasn’t only their smile though, something was off. Their neck, it looked longer. It was longer, and it was still growing! I grab Austin by the arm and take him to the back of the store, away from any windows.
“Your parents are dead Austin, and if you didn’t believe me then, you should believe me now.”
Austin stared at me in disbelief, “I believe you Ruby-May, but doesn’t that mean we have to find a way to leave the island?”
Austin looked hurt, I could see tears forming in his eyes. The only way I knew to comfort him was a hug, so I hugged him. “We do have to leave Austin.”
“When would we leave and how?” Austin said looking around for supplies.
“We would need something to protect ourselves with, food, and water.” I said, then me and Austin got up and began collecting supplies. “Does your family have a first aid kit?” I asked.
“Yeah, it should be up here.” Austin reached up in to a tiny compartment in the ceiling. As he opened it up everything fell to the ground making a loud noise. Suddenly mounds of the infected came to the glass door and windows at the front of the store.
“Austin we have to go now or they’re going to break the glass.” I said picking up our supplies. Austin wasn’t moving. He saw something.
“Austin, what is it?” He looked back at me then lifted his finger up to point at something. His parents were there.
