Embryonic Understanding

Embryonic Understanding

Jun 02, 2025

After the discussion, they had left the room and gone back to where they originally were.

Haori headed back to the library, on her way meeting Ryo who'd been leaving and going back to his own room.

Raphael had gone back to Xianye's office. After two hours, he finished all the work he had and went to the library.

At 2PM, they gathered again in the kitchen, Raphael, Xianye, Haori, Yoru, and Ryo all of them sat where they'd originally sat in the morning.

After finishing their lunch, Raphael, Haori, and Yoru went into the training room. Ryo insisted that they should at least let him watch, however they'd denied so he went back to his room and laid on his bed in boredom. Xianye went back and kept on monitoring to look out for more missing items cases.

In the evening, Haori, Raphael, and Yoru went back into their rooms and showered. After that, Yoru went back to watching television, Raphael sat inside the library and read books. Haori slept for almost around three hours.

After which, she woke up and went into the kitchen. Sometime after, Yoru went into the kitchen, joining Haori in making their dinner.

Finally, at around 11PM at night, Ryo was called downstairs by Raphael as they sat back and had their dinner.

Only this time however, Xianye did not join them. He had told Raphael to bring him the dinner where he was.

After their dinner, Raphael went out on a stroll while Yoru, Ryo, and Haori set their respective beds.

---

The next day, Thursday, April, Year 350, The Third's Frame.

Yawn~

Yoru quietly sat upright sluggishly.

He could barely even keep his eyes open as his pure-white eyes appeared and disappeared, covered by his eye lids, each passing decisecond.

The silk blue sheets were disheveled. The wide, 40 inch television directly in front of his bed reflected his appearance.

He ruffled his hair and walked up to the desk attached to the left of his bed.

Yawning, he picked up phone.

[07:32 AM] In its lock screen, it only displayed the time on a plain white wallpaper.

He unlocked and ignored all notifications, except one. It was from Xianye.

"I'll be busy with the missing items case. There has been another missing items case, I'll be going there to investigate. In the meantime, I want you to take care of the other lodged issues. I've attached the list of new cases."

"As for Ryo, I've already notified Raphael. He'll be the one teaching him today."

Yoru indifferently kept his phone back and walked out of his room through the door the right of the television.

The rays of sun shone brightly through the roof. As he came out of his room, he felt a sudden wave of heat and humidity.

He rotated his neck clockwise and walked downstairs, heading towards the kitchen.

Growing closer to it, he could hear faint, rapid chopping sounds. Then, a cool breeze shot past him instantly drying some of his sweat, as it dissipated, the scent of the breeze lingered.

"Haori, mornin'!" He enthusiastically greeted and walked up to her.

She didn't turn around, continuing to rapidly chopped the potatoes into small blocks. After a few seconds, she finally stopped and wiped her sweat with her wrist. "Morning, Yoru. I've already cut the potatoes, so would you please start cutting the bacons from inside the fridge?"

"While I roast these blocks!" She said as she walked to a large, black box with a one side door, a steel pull handle and a window in the front to view inside.

She opened the door, sliding in the tray holding the potatoes.

Beep!

After clicking a few buttons, the machine beeped and displayed a red hologram.

[ Cooking Method: Roast
  Temperature: 200°C
  Time Left Till Finished: 00:30:00]

The two quietly cooked, occasionally speaking, asking for ingredients, utensils, etc.

At around 8 AM, Raphael, Xianye, and Ryo were called downstairs. However, much like the previous night, Xianye ordered Raphael to directly deliver the food to him, where he was.

---

The lid slowly lift up, unveiling the food hidden underneath.

It was, crisp and tender bacon along with roasted potatoes and seasoned with scallions.

A rich, toasty and smoking scent hung heavy in the air.

Everyone began taking in the aroma and chewing down the food.

Chew~ Chew~ Chew~ Ryo slowly dug into his food, his bites  still slightly uneven, although slightly less than before.

'Xianye's not here... Is it because of the missing items case? It didn't sound that important at all though.'

'Maybe it's some other work...' He stole a glance at Raphael, Yoru, and Haori who sat the at the opposite side of him, before going back to focusing on his food.

After finishing their food, they walked back to their own rooms, however, as Ryo was about to leave, a soft and elegant voice called and held him back.

"From today onwards, your studies will be beginning. Xianye and I have decided that it is better, if you take only a singular class each day. For you and for us as well, so we can deal with other work."

"Today, I'll be the one teaching you. So, let's go into Xianye's office, yes?" He explained with an indiscernible smile as he made his way towards Xianye's office.

Shortly after, Ryo nodded and followed him.

Clack!

Raphael quietly strolled and sat, hunched back, on Xianye's chair. He waved his arm and gestured at Ryo to sit on the single seating sofa to the left of Xianye's desk.

Thud.

As he made himself comfortable, Raphael quickly begun with a question. "How much do you know and remember about the Resistance Laws?"

'The Resistance Laws...'

'I only remember a few... The ones which Mori mentioned I'd need to learn for the Simulation Selection Examinations...' He laughed self-deprecatingly and replied, "I remember the Resistances Treatment Act and the Protection Laws."

"It seems that your understanding is very... embryonic." He indifferently said, and added before Ryo could say anything, "Regardless, settle down please. We'll begin with the very basics."

'Embryonic...? What does that even mean...' He smiled bitterly and nodded as he more-or-less realized that whatever the word meant, it was probably did not mean anything good.

"Yes." He said as Raphael begun his lesson.
