The second day I was here, I made sure that Lyle's cuts were closed and not infected. Today is the third day, Lyle has planned that Ken, I, and a couple of others will be going to a fair that came into town.
Never been, but I'm really excited, I also heard Marcus was going to be there. And that may or may not have persuaded me to join.
And I swear to god that if Lyle makes fun of me and my exs one more time, I will not hesitate to make him walk.
I put on my favorite orange t-shirt, ripped jeans, Converse, and a pair of black sunglasses. I'm the one carpooling everyone because I have an SUV, and everyone is at the same college and broke.
Well except my family, we're kinda rich. Thanks, famous realtor parents.
I pull into the parking lot and text Lyle that I'm here, he responds that he's getting everyone coffee and muffins.
I tell him that he had better get me my caramel latte and a blueberry muffin.
He lol's me and says that he knows very well what I want.
I chuckle aloud and play a game on my phone until everyone is ready to go.
5 people pile into my car, three I know of, two you could tell me were homeless and I wouldn't be able to say otherwise.
Lyle sits up front, Marcus sits in the back-back with a dude I learn is Oliver. Ken sits in the middle with someone whose name is Alex, but they told me that I can call them Al because I give off good vibes. Hell yeah, I have always believed in non-binary supremacy.
I put the address of the fairgrounds in my GPS and start driving.
"Well, let's get this party started!" Lyle exclaimed.
He pairs his phone to my car's Bluetooth, and apparently, he created a playlist for this specific occasion. The music starts off, and everyone immediately gets in a better mood than before.
We sing along to songs that remind us of our childhoods, and we drink our coffees and eat our muffins.
I warn everyone that if they hurt Martha (my car) that they will pay for her to be cleaned.
We arrive at the fair, the air is humid, and all of us are already sweating. We decided to split up into groups of two so that we could do the things that we wanted to do faster. Oliver and Al automatically chose each other. Ken and Lyle seem to begrudgingly gravitate to one another. That leaves me and Marcus together.
Nice.
We all exchange numbers and promise to keep tabs on everyone. Marcus and I wander around before he asks if we can go and play some games. I had already bought us some tickets, and Marcus was quick to use them. He chose mostly strength and gun games, he won most of them... Should I be concerned?
This short man just beat all of the games that I should have won. Damn, cute.
When it was starting to get late, Marcus had won so many things that we were giving away the ones that he didn't want. In the end, we were left with a huge pink bunny plush and a smaller koala plush.
"Hey, can we go on the Ferris wheel?" He asks.
"I don't mind," I responded.
I pay for the ride and hold the pink bunny while Marcus is struggling to hold the smaller koala. It's cute. We board our seats and wait for the ride to start. The Ferris wheel jolts to a start, and as we go up, I can see everything: the fairy lights everywhere, the games, the food trucks, everything for miles. It's breathtaking.
As I'm staring in awe at the sight, a small hand clutches my larger one. I look over and see Marcus' jaw open in wonder, I heard him muttering something in Arabic. His eyes are reflecting the festivities below. I swear, I could see stars in his eyes. His pink and back hair is wipping in the air. I swear I could read what he was thinking through his brown eyes.
He turns to me, "I am fucking scared of heights but this is perfect, this moment is perfect, wow."
Something comes over me maybe it's the magic of the night, or the way he looks right now, but I laugh, then lean in and kiss him.
Lyle Griffin changes colleges and tries to blend in while making friends. Kenneth Mendoza wants to become a lawyer and support his little sister. Marcus Foxx just wants to become successful and have his mom come to the states, but what happens if he can't do that? Oliver Grey wants to be skinny. Alex Kumar wants to be seen. Watch them and others struggle to float in their early adulthood, and how far will you go for the people you love.
