“I had never expected that you came from a military background.”
“You hate it?” he said, gripping tightly on the steering wheel.
“Not what I mean. At some point, I did assumed your background must be complicated. By looking at your physical appearance, that is. Just, not what I anticipated.” I thought you were from underworld. Mafia, perhaps. Or assassin. Or mercenary.
“You hate army? Seem that way. You face churned in disdain looking at the one wearing uniform.”
“Not hate. Dislike, I would preferred to word it. But, I don’t look down on the profession itself. Just… sometimes, did wondered whether they knew what was the meaning behind the position they took.”
“…”
His raised his eyebrow. Confused. That sure brought a chuckle out of my lips. “They meant to protect, yet they also blindly kill. Even if those were innocent, once they received the order, they did not hesitate at all. Some even proud of themselves for what they had done. Although life was supposed to be precious. In the end, it’s all just politic disguised as sacred war.”
“That’s how the world is. Either you kill or be killed.”
“But, I hated it. Some children I knew lost their family to those cruel ideology. What so honorable about killing innocent people? That was pure bullshit.”
“If that’s how you look at armies, then you must hated the government even more.”
“That goes without saying.”
Sneering as he geared down, he said, “arrived.”
Half day was all it took for us to settle down. Mostly Taylor who did the work around the house. He didn’t let me do any heavy work. Was there any man like him? I could think of only one.
There was community meet in the city every Monday. Everyone had to partake in various social activities and was given task in accordance to their capabilities. Superhuman specialized in combat like Taylor, John, and Sir Hugh were entrusted with rescue mission.Meanwhile, those specialized in defense like Claire and those with medical expertise like Michelle were assigned in specific research institution.
Ordinary human with no superhuman abilities also had their own duty corresponding to their calling or previous career. That was the case for Grandpa Losier, William, Ashley and Henry. Additionally, there’s also an educational institution for young talent, which Horace end up went to. For Ben, I haven’t heard the news from him since we part way on the day of our arrival.
Reaching our home as the meet end, I dragged him into our room. “Let me go with you.”
“No.”
“I’m grateful you did that for my sake. But… If you go for those missions, we had less time with each other. Won’t you miss me?”
Nothing beats the tear of a maiden. I knew more than anyone. He choose to do what he did because he care about me and wished for me only easy and happy life. But… in expense of his life? No. What he had done? Something really touching but also infuriating.
Everyone had a duty on their hand. Even I could not escape. However, in public, in front of everyone else, he demanded that I was to be exempted. Which brought to people’s fury. As a solution, he took on the most mission by himself and even took dangerous task. One that most would avoided like plague.
How could I stay touched when he put himself in danger? I got no choice but to use honey trap. In order for me to stay by his side. He need to take me with him. The very least I could do if we encountered unavoidable risk, was bringing him into the space. Plus, the water in my space had healing properties.
His eyebrow twitched. Seem to be deep in thought. He said, “I will miss you.”
“Me too! I won’t stop you if you still want to go for the mission, but! Bring me with you.”
“Danger—”
“I’ll be fine! You know I had my space, right? If I sense something went wrong, I’ll quickly hide in my space! Just… Just… I just want to be by your side.”
“Eve…”
As he held me tightly in his embrace, I knew it worked. Having a terrific confidence in himself, he must be thinking he could protect me so nothing will happened. But, seriously. His heartbeat was so melodious it made me sleepy. His body warmth was so comforting. Slowly, I was pulled into my dream.
Two days later, when we were preparing to depart for our first mission ever, he said, “Eve, no matter what happen, I want you to prioritize your safety. Don’t give a damn about other.”
“How about you?”
“No worries, I just have to kill them all.”
I’m terribly worried. He really have no qualm about his own safety at all. Actually, I’m also worry he might inflicted harm on the rest of members of the group. How can I not worry after what happen the day before.
For every mission, the authority would assigned a group of different individual with the most compatible strength. A group consisted of 8 members. The day before our departure, our group had met up for the first time. To get to know about each other.
However, while some of them do not care about the extra baggage which was myself, the others had an entirely different idea. Because of the opposition, the group was split into three faction.
Three of them was neutral party. They don’t give any attention to anything outside of the mission itself. The other four was those who opposed my participation. Stating I am a burden as I had no supernatural power, and I took up their food supplies and space in transportation.
That one person in the third faction was Taylor himself. The one who brought me along. I do felt bad for creating a crack in the group. However, I care more about Taylor. To lessen my guilt, I asked Taylor to ride our own car. One that we got from his uncle. Thankfully, he doesn’t have to worry about food supplies because I have my space. Got a lot of fresh food!
“Well, at least we don’t have to be so secretive in our own car. Lest they might unearthed what we’re hiding,” I uttered, feeling reassured with the final outcome.
“You don’t have to worry. I will kill anyone who know.”
“No, no. There’s no need to un-alive anyone. Let’s avoid that. We still have to live as one community for who knows how long.”
“I’ll cover it up as an accident. No one is more important than you, Eve,” he said, squeezing my hand tenderly.
“I’ll just avoid being detected.” I swear I had to take precaution at all time! Not really a good feeling to have when innocent people would be un-alive because of myself.
