Bavoom! Thunder stroked. I held my hands over my ears for every bolt of lighting flashed through the sky. Boom!
The blazing fire flooding the corpse all around the ground. Blocks of sharp pyramid shaped ice pierced through bodies of the living dead. Vines strangling and pulling the bodies off.
I wonder how humanity would changed with these new existence. Human that transcended the limit of ordinary.
Their face flushed euphoric. Like taking a drug and being on high. The more they released the power within them, the bigger was the quake on earth.
Will they be drowned in power?
I could not help but to worry. Not all human were able to maintain their standing as they keep going to the top.
However, all my worry vanished instantly as I met his gaze. Right. I almost forgot. My purpose here were solely for him.
Even if humanity were to change, I’m sure they will found their way back. As long as they keep living, someone will come and lead them to a better world. Perhaps, in this world, people like Michelle and John would be the best example as they keep their head down despite the unimaginable power they had.
[Congratulations, host.]
“Oh, system. I almost forgot about you. Been a while since I heard from you.”
[All your attention was on Taylor. How could you had the time to talk with this lowly me.]
“I didn’t knew you could sulk… I’m sorry. I’ll stop neglecting you, okay?”
[…]
“Oh! Why did you congrats me just now?”
[Because you choose to reveal the information ahead of time, many lives were saved. Not only that, there are another three key person in this group, which strength was almost on par with Taylor and John. Your decision will caused them to grow even more in the future, and increased the chance for humanity to gain its freedom.]
“Seriously. How many key person were there in this world?”
[Bit more than you have met. This world was full of unspeakable threat, and human could do nothing by depending on one individual. What makes human strong was their unity with each other. Their uniqueness when combined would bring the world to another stage of development.]
“I see your point there. So, why was Taylor was the one chosen for the mission?”
[Host, I cannot disclosed too much information. However, I could tell one thing. The mission target in each world was one with the most affinity and compatibility with you.]
“That… almost sound like fate.”
Hm… Hm?! Wait! Fate! That was the key word! The forced fate between two key person. Su Qing Ran and Michelle had their own fated person but was forcefully cut by the deviant. They were then pushed into the forced fate.
“System, does that mean, Zi Qi and Taylor also had their own original fated person? One that truly meant for them? Was they the identity I took?”
[I cannot answer the question.]
“What actually happen to the original soul of this identity?”
[There was no original soul, host. These bodies had no soul. Not until you came.]
That word choice sure was playing with my mind. I still could not completely comprehended everything, but I knew one thing for sure. At least I didn’t pushed any soul out from their body just to occupy it myself.
“Eve,” Taylor trotted toward me as he called out my name.
“Good, you know how to keep your clothes clean already. Less laundry that is,” I quipped, glancing around his body to find any trace of blood. None.
He extended his arms, a sign of him asking for a hug. So that’s why he learn to keep his clothes clean. Sly fox. I like it. I wrapped my arms around his back, nuzzled my face on his chest.
“How was it?” I asked.
“Liberated. I didn’t knew I could feel so free using my power. Eve, did you watch me? Do I look cool?” he said as he squished my cheeks and tilted my head upward so our eyes met.
“I saw it. You were charming. Really, really so.”
The grin on his face widen. He peck his lips on my right cheek. He peck his lips on my left cheek. Then he bumped our forehead, giggling with satisfaction.
“Eve… My Eve… I’m so happy,” he mumbled.
“Were you that happy?”
“Yes, Eve. So, so happy.”
“Then, we have to call for celebration! Should I make strawberry crepe cake?”
“Will you?”
“Yeah.”
“No. Not now. Let’s go back first. These people keep getting on my nerve. Why were they so clingy?”
Ever since they saw what Taylor was capable of, they kept trying to flatter him around. Excluding Layla. She seem to be more interested in my knowledge, with how she kept prying for more information on zombies instead of Taylor.
“Alright, alright. But, that’s mean, we have to wait for a while. We haven’t reached the destination for the mission yet.”
He seem to only realized the fact. Quickly, he urged the other to keep moving before the sun set. The good thing was, their progression grew at a tremendous pace.
The second generation zombies became easy kill for them now. Even though they were still wavering just that morning. It’s a good thing, of course.
After coming back from the mission, news spread widely. Invitations from research center kept flooding into our mail box. For the sake of quicker development, I missed out on going to mission with Taylor twice.
He seem to be conflicted between being glad and sad. He was glad that I spared myself from dangerous exploration, but was sad to be separated.
The reason he accepted the task despite having to be away from me was the fact the mission was nearby and doesn’t took too much time to be done. When he came back, he would cuddled all day long.
“Your next mission in three days, right?” I asked, brushing his head that was rested on my lap.
“Um…” he replied, groggily. Fiddling with my fingers.
“I’ll be free by then. So, I’m going to tag along. I already asked for permission. This time, I’m not going as the extra, but part of the team.”
“Who gave the permission?” He rose up, holding my shoulders.
“Democratic vote among the authoritative figures and elders. Majority agreed with my participation, even I myself.”
His forehead wrinkled. Conflicted again, I see. “But, but… this time, the mission is much more dangerous than the previous one. Can you sit this one out?” he said, voice trembling.
“I’m aware of the risk. I knew where we’re going to. That precisely why I need to go. I can’t pulled out my weight just because I’m scared. And I trust that you will have my back.”
Slowly, I dragged my knee and took him in my embrace. I knew well that I’m breaking his heart by putting myself in danger, but I can’t leave him alone.
Moreover, this expedition was also a crucial factor that will decided the coming future. I had to prevent John’s death and Taylor’s complete blackening.
Many events had changed. Even for this expedition. Michelle was not supposed to participate in the mission, but there she was. Layla was supposed to die, but she well alive.
The mission itself was supposed to be divided into two team, but instead, they assigned one big team. Taylor hated John. Well, he still dislike him but not to the point of hate.
