Truth Be Told

Chapter 8-Wynona

Chapter 8-Wynona

Jun 13, 2025

Wynona waited for Ferris to say anything but he never did. But there was a very troubled look on his face for a while, like he was arguing with himself. Wynona did not say much after that. Instead she looked around, waiting for Ferris to leave so she could go to sleep. Of course she enjoyed being around Ferris, but she was extremely tired.

After a while, Ferris spoke, which was a surprise to Wynona. "Thanks…I don't really agree, but I appreciate the compliment."

Wynona smiled softly. "Of course, we're friends."

"Yeah…" He trailed off and leaned back on the couch. "You want to watch a movie or something?"

"Sure." She did not want to, she wanted to go to sleep, but she did not want to miss out on a chance to spend time with Ferris either.

As Ferris flicked through the different movies he glanced at Wynona. "So, when's your birthday?"

"Oh, um," She was embarrassed, but she wanted to be honest. "I don't know the official date."

Ferris chuckled and turned to Wynona. "Really? You don't know your own birthday?"

Wynona looked down. "It's complicated."

"Oh," Ferris' tone softened. "That's fine. Is there a reason you don't know?"

Wynona froze. She quickly shook her head. She felt bad for lying, but she did not want to answer all the questions that came along with the truth. "Can we talk about something else?"

"Sure." Ferris put on a movie. "I've never seen this one before, but I've heard it's good."

The movie started and Wynona tried to pay attention, but Ferris was distracting her. She constantly took small glances at Ferris, but he seemed lost in his own world. He was not looking at Wynona and although it looked like he was watching the movie, Wynona could tell he was thinking about something else. When the movie ended Wynona immediately looked at Ferris, smiling, waiting to hear his opinion. However, to her surprise, Ferris was asleep. He must have leaned over when Wynona was not looking and laid down and passed out.

Wynona chuckled and considered waking him up, but something stopped her. She wanted Ferris' company. Wynona tried to get comfortable with Ferris sleeping on the other end of the couch. She turned off the television, but she had a hard time falling asleep. She was lying down opposite of Ferris, but she could feel his legs beside her. It was stupid, but the mere idea of them making physical contact kept her up. It was not going to be an easy night for Wynona, but she did not mind.

It was morning but the sky was still dark, but a hint of light blue began to show in the distance. Wynona slowly opened her eyes and rubbed the sleep from her eyes. She sat up and looked around, almost forgetting she was in Ferris' house. She glanced at Ferris who was fast asleep on the couch. Wynona could not help but stare.

She broke her own gaze, feeling like an idiot staring at him. Wynona slowly got off the couch, careful not to wake him. She stretched and looked around. The entire house was quiet and Wynona would have felt bad walking around without permission. She sat down on the floor near Ferris. She knew they would work on the song, but at the moment she was happy sitting in the silence. There was no pressure to hide her feelings and she could be lost in thought without the worry of getting caught. She could not ask for a more perfect moment.

Months went by and Wynona and Ferris steadily worked on the song. With the help of having a week off from school due to Fall Break, they were able to get the chorus done. Things were going smoothly and not just for the song.

Being around Ferris had become a lot easier for Wynona. The tension between them slowly disappeared and they were able to talk to each other without multiple awkward silences in between. Of course, whenever personal topics came up neither one of them wanted to answer. If they hung out outside of campus they would usually go to the diner with Ferris' friends or Wynona's friend, but Wynona enjoyed any time she could spend with Ferris.

Both Wynona's and June's suspicions subsided as Ferris was beginning to prove that he was genuine. A part of Wynona hoped something more would come from their new friendship, but she knew better than to get her hopes up.

At school, Mr. Krona was adamant on seeing everyone's progress. Knowing about Ferris' stage fright, Wynona had no idea how to tell Ferris. She could not risk him bailing out on her, especially with the performance being in six months. Wynona was still trying to come up with a solution to get Ferris to sing and overcome his stage fright at the same time.

Wynona was in her room sitting at her keyboard. She was trying to come up with a simple melody for the song. She wanted to get as much done as she could before she left to go meet up with Ferris at the park. She actually needed to leave soon if she wanted to be on time, but she had been procrastinating on the song and she was beginning to feel bad. Ferris was very clearly working hard, and Wynona was putting it off.

She got as much done as she could, but she was beginning to run late. Wynona quickly pulled a green hoodie over her head and ran out the door. She had already told Andrea where she was going so no one stopped her on the way out.

Wynona was walking pretty fast, hoping she was not keeping Ferris waiting. She had to walk a few blocks before arriving at the park. It took her a while to find Ferris because his directions over the phone were terrible. Once she did find him though, they both sat on a small bench under a canopy.

Ferris took out his notebook and turned to Wynona. "Hey, how are you?"

"I'm good, just stressing over the whole composing part of the song." Wynona smiled bashfully and looked down at the notebook.

Ferris laughed. "Don't stress over it. You've got a lot of time to work on it."

Wynona nodded her head. She did not have the courage to tell Ferris that she had barely anything. "So," She changed the subject. "How do you want to start the next line?"

Ferris was quiet, lost in thought. "How about…" He trailed off humming the song to himself. "As new as dawn...as new as dawn...the voices...become lower?"

They both grimaced at the line. Wynona chimed in, "As new as dawn the voices...are low?"

They grimaced again.

"Um," Ferris scratched the back of his neck.

Wynona looked at the line for a while before suggesting, "The voices lower?"

Ferris thought about it for a while before shrugging his shoulders. "It's not the best line, but it'll work." Working with Ferris the past few months, Wynona had learned that Ferris is very critical when it came to his songs. She also noticed that Ferris was not used to working with other people. There were multiple times where he would get an idea and just write it down without talking to Wynona about it. It was only slightly annoying, but Wynona mostly found it to be admirable.

Ferris kept writing, singing aloud, "To listen to our tune." He put the pencil down and rubbed his eyes.

Wynona glimpsed at him and almost gasped. "Ferris! Your eyes are completely red! What happened?"

Ferris chuckled and looked down. "Let me take them out." Ferris took the contacts out and put them into a small case. He blinked a lot before rubbing his eyes. Ever since Wynona had found out about Ferris' brown eyes, Ferris had become more comfortable with not wearing the contacts around her.

Wynona frowned. "You should really get that looked at. Your eyes have been getting irritated a lot lately."

"Yeah…" Ferris was still rubbing his eyes. "I think it might be the solution."

"You should stop wearing the contacts, Ferris. Especially if it's the solution." Wynona shifted in her seat.

Ferris shook his head. "No, I–I can't do that." He rubbed his eyes again. "Can you hold this for me?" He handed Wynona the contacts case.

"Oh, sure." She took the case and put it in her pocket. "Do you want to keep working?"

Ferris nodded his head. "Yeah, I can keep working, don't worry."

Wynona was worried, but she nodded her head. She whispered the words to herself multiple times. "As new as dawn…" As she thought, her mind slipped off to when she and Ferris had their first work session together. It was raining hard…and it gave Wynona an idea. She turned to Ferris. "As new as dawn the rain beats louder." She stopped for a moment to think. "It tries to cover our beating souls."

Ferris smiled and nodded his head. He quickly jotted it down. After he looked up and mentioned, "Hey you never told me your birthday. I know you don't know the exact date, but there must be a day you celebrate."

Wynona had to think for a minute. "Um…March?" She always forgot the date, but it did not take long for her to remember it. "March fifth."

"Really? Mine's in April." Ferris smiled. "Can't believe you're older than me," He joked.

Wynona laughed. "What's the specific date?"

"The fifteenth." Ferris looked down at the notebook. "Wanna end this early? My eyes are killing me."

"Sure, I don't mind." Wynona quickly got up. "I'll walk you home."

Ferris smiled weakly. "Thanks."

They walked in silence for a while. Wynona wanted to talk, but by the time she thought of anything to say they were already at Ferris' house. Ferris was quick to go inside, barely saying goodbye.

Wynona was slightly disappointed, but she started walking home. Just as she made it to the corner she heard feet pounding on the pavement behind her.

“Wyn! Wait!” The light turned green, signaling for Wynona to cross. As she took her first step she glanced back and saw Ferris running after her. She paused and let the light turn red again.

He stopped a few inches away from Wynona, hardly tired from his run down the street. He added, “My...contacts.”

Wynona had to process the statement. Then she remembered that Ferris gave her the case. She frowned slightly and shook her head. “Tomorrow. You need to give your eyes a break. I’ll get up early and come to your house okay?”

He frowned and hesitated. Wynona saw Ferris' hand go up like he was ready to grab his hand and snatch it away. He slowly lowered his hand and hesitantly nodded his head. “As soon as you’re done getting dressed.”

Wynona nodded her head and grinned. The light flickered green again and Wynona crossed the street. Just as she made it to the other side she quickly looked back. Ferris was still there, anxious. “Go home,” She called, “I’ll be back tomorrow morning. You can wait for a few hours, can’t you?”

Ferris chuckled and looked more at ease and smiled. He waved and walked away, taking short glances back at Wynona. It probably meant nothing, but Wynona's heart could not help but skip a beat every time Ferris looked back. She smiled to herself then practically skipped home.
