Once they dropped off Ferris, Jonathan asked more personal questions. He started with asking about the song, specifically asking if they actually worked. Wynona scolded Jonathan about using her nickname in front of Ferris. She had a very strong feeling that Ferris would never let that go. After Wynona spent a major portion of the ride assuring him that they worked, Jonathon shifted to another topic.
"So, is Ferris the kid you like?" He was staring straight ahead, but she could see the smug look on his face.
Wynona's ears became hot and she quickly turned to the window. "Excuse me?"
Jonathon snickered. "What? I'm not dumb. Besides, he seems like a good kid, better than the last one."
"Please stop talking." Wynona covered her face with her hand. "Ferris and I are just friends."
"I see," He glanced at her. "So there's another Ferris you and June have been talking about?"
Wynona's head snapped to him, heat rising in her cheeks. "You've been eavesdropping?"
Jonathan laughed. "It's not eavesdropping if I heard it while I was walking by."
"I can't believe you," She looked out the window and quickly turned back. "You didn't tell Andrea, did you?"
Jonathan chuckled awkwardly. "Well…"
Wynona covered her face again, the car getting extremely warm. "Oh my God…"
"What? She won't say anything," He assured.
"Good, I really don't want to deal with it." They pulled into the driveway and Wynona was the first out of the car, trying to avoid any more embarrassing questions.
She quickly opened the door and as she entered the house Andrea was in the kitchen looking at her. "Hey, Wynnie Bear, how was your date?"
Wynona stopped at the door and turned to the couch where June was. She was on her phone unphased. Wynona's ears were on fire at this point and she quickly escaped to her room.
As if this could not get any worse, her phone started ringing. Wynona answered, "Hello?"
"Hey!" It was Ferris. "I was thinking, maybe I could come over to your house? To work on the song of course."
Wynona sat down on her bed and grinned uncontrollably. "Y–Yeah, that'd be great. How about this weekend?"
"Perfect. We're still going to the diner tomorrow right?" Ferris asked.
"Yeah." Wynona laid down on her bed. Although they were only talking about the project, she did not want the conversation to end. She wished they could talk all night. However, the chances of that happening were slim. Wynona was not someone people chose to spend their free time with.
"Actually," Ferris started to sound nervous. "I was really enjoying the talk we had at the park. Maybe we could just hang out? No working on the project, just talking, like friends."
Wynona was quiet. She could not believe what she was hearing. Ferris wanted to hangout? "Just talking?" She mumbled. She wanted to be happy, but in the back of her mind was a small voice. He just wants something from you…
Ferris laughed awkwardly. "I–I mean, unless you wanted to work on the song."
"No! No, we can hang out. Let's hang out." Wynona sat up. "I want to hang out."
"Awesome! I can't wait, I'll see you tomorrow, Wynnie Bear."
A grin was growing on her face and her ears were as hot as fire. "Gosh, you suck…bye."
Ferris laughed. "Bye bye."
She hung up and practically fell off her bed. Wynona ran out of her room and stopped in the center of the room. She turned to her parents who were both setting the table.
Andrea waved. "Hey Bear, what's wrong?"
"Ferris wants to come over this weekend and I'm going out with him tomorrow after school." Wynona darted between her parents. "What does that mean?"
"Like a date?" Andrea asked, a large grin on her face.
Wynona held up her finger and laughed awkwardly. "No. We're just talking. Ferris would never date someone like me!"
"Oh, come on, Wyn," Jonathan crossed his arms over his chest. "I'm sure–"
"No!" She shook her head adamantly. "He'd never. So what does that make this?"
June sat up from the couch. "So it's like a date, but not a date?"
"Yes!" She pointed at her sister while looking at her parents. "What she said."
Andrea turned to Jonathan who shrugged. She looked back at Wynona and slowly nodded. "Um, o–okay. Just let us know if you want us to pick you up tomorrow."
Wynona nodded and ran back to her room. As she did, the conversation she had with her family finally computed. Date? She stopped in the hallway. "It's like a date? No…" She was frozen. "A date…" It could not be a date, because Ferris could never see her like that. Even if he did, it would not last long, it could not last long because feelings for Wynona never lasted long.
