"To demand a Halfborn to remove their mask, or attempt to forcefully remove it yourself, is one of the most severe offences another species can perform to us. A Halfborn will only remove their mask in front of you if they trust you, or if it is an urgent matter."
"Attempted removal of my mask gives me every reason to deny you any access to the information of this case." Aelfrun concluded its storytime with a decisive slamming of its book, and the replacement of their mask upon their face. The purple light vanished, and the Detective was allowed up from the floor. She was speechless. Eventually, she got her voice back and sputtered out quietly:
"Damn demonic bastard." Before turning on her heels and striding out of the building, her Officer friend followed quickly behind.
"Lovely to see you too, Aelfrun. We've been receiving ... recommendations from the public that they would feel more comfortable working with you if you had a human on your team. This is Aubrey. I would like for him to join you all." Aelfrun scrutinised the male behind him. He was wearing an ill fitting police uniform, and looked like he had just got out of the academy. Glasses were awkwardly perched on the end of his nose, and over his shoulder, the strap of his backpack appeared frayed and stained. He was awkwardly wringing his hands together, his eyes nervously flitting around, from Aelfrun, to the floor, to the Chief, and then back to Aelfrun again. Aelfrun had absolutely nothing against having a human member join the team, in fact they had been looking for one for a while, but a police officer who was little more than a kid?
"You're joking, right Sir?" they asked incredulously.
"I’m not, I’m afraid. I know you were looking for someone, but the requests and complaints have just got too much to ignore. From today onwards he is a part of your team. You may train him however you see fit." the Chief nodded at the other human, patting him on the shoulder. "Good luck. You’ll need it." The last part was whispered conspiratorially into Aubrey’s ear. Aelfrun smiled slightly behind the mask. The Chief wasn’t wrong about that. But maybe it wouldn’t be the kind of luck Aubrey thought. He headed towards the door and let himself out. Aelfrun sighed, attention turning towards the human standing awkwardly in the entranceway.
