Tropical Sunrise - A Pokémon Sun Moon fanfiction story

Chapter 2: The Pokémon School (part 2)

Chapter 2: The Pokémon School (part 2)

Jun 16, 2025

The next day, both the professor and Selene got ready quite early in the morning. Kukui prepared sandwiches for both of them, packing Selene’s in a brown backpack that he found somewhere in his house that the girl could use for her daily life. Now fully prepared, and after saying goodbye to Rockruff, they walked the trail next to the coast. The sun had barely risen, and the warm rays of sunlight made the trip more enjoyable. It barely took them ten minutes to arrive to a huge white building. The central part was big and round, with three floors and a bell tower crowning it. Around the central part, several towers were connected to it with corridors, and the open parts gave Selene the impression those could be classrooms. The grounds surrounding the building were occupied by some sports areas, a sort of swimming pool and a garden. Even if it was still early, there were already some children along with their Pokémon in the area. Selene was impressed by the image of the building, and though she hesitated at first, she was then sure that was the Pokémon School. She needed Professor Kukui to pat her in her shoulder to bring her back to reality and walk inside the building, with the professor greeting some students that he knew.

Their first stop was the principal’s Office. The school was run by someone called Samson Oak, and old man, quite tanned and with a long gray mane, wearing a flower shirt. According to Kukui’s description, he was the cousin of a highly renowned researcher in another region. For the girl, however, that seemed to be a strange person, as his first words were:

“Hi, Selene! Nice to ‘Pichu’! I hope you have a great ‘Tyme-pole’ in our school. That would make ‘Me-owth’ very happy!”

Selene left a small giggle out for mere education and consideration, but even if she understood the jokes, she wouldn’t have found them funny. They spent little time talking to the principal, as he was already informed about the girl’s circumstances, and Kukui and Selene walked together to the classroom, which was located in one of the towers she had previously seen from the outside. The silent corridor was suddenly filled with laughter and voices coming from inside the room. Realizing those were the voices of other children, she got nervous and stopped walking. The professor turned around, looking at her worried, but the girl shook her head. She just needed an extra minute to prepare her mind. It was then that something came to her mind, making her ask to Kukui:

“Professor… Do you think I should tell them about… my amnesia?”, asked Selene with a doubtful voice. The professor hummed for a moment.

“Well, that’s not on me to decide. However, they will ask questions about your life, so you’re gonna be in trouble if you decide to lie. I’d say it’s better to let them know, they won’t think bad of you. As long as you’re yourself, they will welcome you, promise! You don’t hafta do it right in your introduction, wait until you’re all chilling”, explained Professor Kukui.

The girl felt reassured thanks to the professor’s words. Without anything else to say, they walked inside the classroom.

“Good morning everybody! It’s been a long time!”, greeted Kukui cheerfully.

As Selene had suspected, the classroom had no walls, as a big terrace showed some great views of the schoolyard and the forests in the distance. Surprisingly though, there was a big tree on the right side of the room with a ladder on it that led to an upper floor. In the middle of the class, several desks and chairs were organized in two rows, and among them, several children talked to each other.

“Professor, long time no see you! What happened?”

Who asked that question was a cheerful tall girl with green hair and long thin ponytails wearing jean overalls and a pink shirt. She was mildly tanned and her surprised face was full of freckles. She had a flower on her head. The professor smiled.

“Don’t worry, Mallow, I’ll explain later! Now sit down you all”, said Kukui jokingly.

There were other children surrounding the girl called Mallow: two girls and two boys. One of the girls was shorter, with blue hair, white t-shirt, wide blue pants and sandals, her eyes blue and deep as the ocean. The other girl had a long blonde mane, wearing a beautiful white dress and a wide white hat on her head, her face showing more of a serene expression. Regarding the boys, one was tall, displaying his dark skin through his shirtless chest. With spiky hair and red shorts, he seemed to be one of strong emotions. The other one was quite short, with a rounder body and short orange hair. He wore a grey t-shirt and brown shorts, and seemed to have some kind of electronic device on his belt. All the children sat down in their respective desks, following their teacher’s instructions.

“Well, as you can see, we have a new classmate from now on!”, exclaimed Professor Kukui to the class. Then, looking at Selene: “Go ahead and introduce yourself!”

So far, the kids had been so focused on the professor’s return that they didn’t noticed Selene until the professor mentioned her to them. Selene could see their surprised expressions and that made her nervous, but then, her eyes met the blonde girl’s. Her green eyes seemed to sparkle joyfully, reminding Selene of all the vast nature of the island and making her blush unconsciously. Contrary to her serene outlook, Selene thought that girl had to be nice. It took a moment for her to focus again on the class and, after writing her name on the blackboard, she looked at all the kids again and said:

“H… Hi! My name is… Selene. I… I recently got to Alola and well, I still don’t know a lot of people here so... I hope we can get along… and be friends!”

Selene decided for that simple introduction, although there was not much to say about her, at least not at that moment. But that was enough for all the kids to clap happily, which calmed her down. The professor told Selene to sit down in the free desk, which was on the front line between Mallow and the blonde girl. Selene greeted the two girls briefly before the professor called their attention again to begin the lesson.

The first hour was mostly focused on reviewing the type compatibility of different Pokémon, something Selene was still learning. Although she was scared at first about being too behind in her studies, she was surprised to find out that some of them still had problems remembering all the compatibilities as well. Among all of them, the blonde girl and the short boy seemed to be the ones that put more effort into their studies, as they gave most of the correct answers. Still, Selene was able to remember some things she checked the previous day, receiving congratulations from Mallow. And so, one hour passed by quickly, the bell ringing to announce the end of the lesson.

“Okay, just a short break before going on, got it? I’ll come back faster than a Quick Attack”, said Professor Kukui before leaving the room.

Selene was checking her notes again, just to make sure that she didn’t make any typos, when she heard a loud roar behind her. Scared, she looked at her back, noticing for the first time the group of Pokémon that had remained on the back that whole time: a small blue seal, a round shiny rodent, something that looked like a round walking radish and a big red tortoise. The girl muttered a brief “Woaaah”, amazed at having such peculiar Pokémon so close.

“They surprised you?”

The girl turned around again, finding out all the kids in front of her desk. She was so focused on the Pokémon that she didn’t notice them walking around, and less Mallow talking to her. Having them so close, Selene got a bit nervous.

“Oh, yeah!”, exclaimed Selene. “They seem nice…”

“Of course they are! Sorry, we haven’t introduced ourselves yet! My name is Mallow, and my partner Pokémon is Bounsweet, the one that looks like a fruit”, introduced Mallow herself.

“I’m Kiawe”, said the shirtless boy with a kinda serious tone. “And my partner is Turtonator, the biggest one. You better not underestimate us.”

“Quite a mood, Kiawe”, complained the blue-haired girl. Then, looking at Selene, she said: “Hi, my name’s Lana. The blue one over there is my friend Popplio.”

“I’m Sophocles. You won’t find any other expert in technology than me!”, bragged the short boy during his introduction. “My partner Togedemaru is the grey one.”

“And I’m Lillie. Right now I don’t have any Pokémon. Still, it’s nice to meet you”, said the blonde girl.

“Oh, well, nice to meet you all!”, said Selene nervously as she tried to memorize all those name's.

“Say, say, do you have a partner Pokémon?”, asked Mallow with enthusiasm.

“Oh! No, sorry. I don’t have any Pokémon right now”, answered Selene with a sad tone.

“Maybe you can’t touch Pokémon? You wouldn’t be the only one, Lillie here has the same problem”, said Lana while looking at Lillie with a sly smile.

“It’s… it’s not that! It’s just… I prefer to study them from a safe distance before doing that!”, complained Lillie while blushing, causing a light laugh among the group. Selene giggled shyly while negating with her head.

“Say, where do you come from?”, asked Mallow, continuing the conversation.

There it was. Just like the professor said, such a personal question would occur sooner or later. Why wouldn’t it? It’s normal to be curious about that kind of thing when you meet someone new. Still, Selene got nervous and looked down a bit. The other kids noticed and looked at her worried, not understanding what was wrong about that question. The girl took a deep breath and said:

“Sorry, Mallow, but… I can’t answer your question… You see, I… I don’t remember anything about my past.”

A strange silence filled the room. Mallow and the others were confused and didn’t know what to say. The only one who reacted differently was Kiawe, looking at Selene suspiciously.

“Hey, if you don’t wanna say it, just be honest, but don’t come up with that lame excuse. Not even Lana makes that kind of lies”, accused Kiawe.

“It’s not a lie, really!”, exclaimed Selene, a bit scared. “I was found on the beach and I don’t remember anything before…”

“Wait a sec... it’s you! You are the mysterious girl!”, exclaimed Mallow surprised.

Everybody looked at Mallow with confusion, including Selene. Lana was the only one who dared to ask:

“What do you mean?”

“Well, she’s been the conversation topic in the restaurant for the last week!”, explained Mallow. “A mysterious girl appeared unconscious on a beach, not even the police knows where she came from! And they say she had no memories… Is that really you? I thought those were just rumors!”

“Yeah, that’s me”, said Selene, now more relaxed, but sad. “Professor Kukui found me over a week ago and I’ve been living with him since then. And yeah, I don’t remember anything and… I’m not sure when my memories will come back. Sorry.”

Silence came back again, although this time, the kids felt bad for the poor girl in front of them. Especially Kiawe, who looked concerned and scratched his head.

“Hey, sorry about earlier. What you said sounded so weird”, said Kiawe awkwardly.

“Yeah, don’t take it personally, he’s like that with people at first”, explained Sophocles as he approached Selene. “Hey, if you let me analyze your brain waves, I may create a device to help you!”

“Sophocles, stop!”, nagged Lillie. Then, she looked at Selene worried. “But what are you doing in our school?”

“Nobody came for me and there’s no information about me. Since I’ll be in Alola for a while, the professor thought it could be good to come here. I can study a bit more and spend time with other kids”, explained Selene. Realizing her own words, she blushed and exclaimed nervously: “That doesn’t mean you have to play with me! I understand you don’t want to after all this…”

“Hey, what are you saying?”, asked Mallow a bit angrily, but her face changed to show happiness. “Sure, you have it rough, but you are part of the class now and we are all happy to have you here! I’m sure we’ll get along, am I right?”

Mallow asked that to the rest of her friends, who smiled and nodded in unison. Even though it seemed to go wrong at first, everything ended up. Selene felt happy and relaxed, letting out a shy “Thanks” while blushing. Outside the room, Professor Kukui was hiding behind the door frame, happy seeing they all ended up on good terms, then going back inside to continue the lessons.

The rest of the day went by rather quickly. After a few lessons, the professor let the other kids to show Selene around the school. The girl found the place had far more features than she initially believed. Not only were there other playgrounds around the school, but there was also a whole circuit in the back of the main building where they held Tauros races! Selene had fun seeing all that, but what she enjoyed the most was spending that time with the other kids. Even after their initial problem, they were really kind and made it easy for her to relax and open up. Soon, the school day ended and it was time to leave.

“I’m sorry!”, exclaimed Mallow in a worried tone. “I have to help today at the restaurant! But I promise we’ll prepare something big to welcome you!”

Actually, all the other kids already had their own plans for the day, but Mallow was the only one who seemed that worried. Selene tried to comfort her. Of course she understood they had things to do! Kiawe, who quickly left flying on his Charizard, had to help his family as well, and Lana had to take care of her sisters. Sophocles, according to his own words, had some important research he couldn’t delay, although nobody seemed to take that seriously. Sophocles and Mallow left the place, leaving only Lillie, Selene and Lana, the latter getting ready to leave, when suddenly, a long black limo appeared on the road and stopped in front of Lillie. The blond girl approached the window and talked to the driver in low voice. Selene was surprised to see a limo in such a place, so she approached Lana and asked:

“Hey, what’s going on?”

“Oh, didn’t you know?”, said Lana casually. “Lillie is the princess of a far region.”

When hearing the word ‘princess’, Selene blushed like a tomato and got nervous. “P-princess?”, asked Selene stuttering. Then, Lana sticked out her tongue and said:

“Just joking!”

Still in shock, but somehow relieved, Selene contemplated Lana as she left running down the road. The girl felt her new friend didn’t have ill intentions with that joke, but that still caught her off-guard. She looked at Lillie again, in time to see the limo leaving without her. Selene looked at Lillie with confused eyes as she saw the blonde girl getting close to her.

“Weren’t you leaving?”, asked Selene
