Later that night, I stepped out for air.
That’s when I saw her.
Elara stood by the courtyard fountain, talking to… no one.
Except—something flickered behind her. Runes. Ancient symbols.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered. “I’m trying not to lose control.”
The air shimmered. Her shadow changed—wings, maybe? Horns?
I blinked.
“Who's there?” she called out.
I stepped from behind the pillar. “Just me.”
Her eyes widened. “How long have you been there?”
“Long enough to ask if you’re okay.”
She looked away. “I… can’t explain. Not yet.”
“Then don’t,” I said gently. “I’m not here to force answers. Just… don’t try to carry it all alone.”
Her expression cracked—just a little.
And suddenly I wasn’t standing with a heroine.
I was standing with a girl who was scared.
And trusting me.
The villain.
