Shadows in the light (WIP)

Obsidian scales

Obsidian scales

Jun 19, 2025

A roar shattered the treeline. Two massive wings beat the air, hurling debris across a field. As the great beast landed, its obsidian-black scales caught the moonlight, glinting like polished armor. Fire rolls from the back of its throat, sweeping over the battlefield. The forest is left desolate, its remains charred and ablaze. Two human silhouettes step forward, unfazed by the smoke biting at their lungs.

“Theah, remember what we did with the giant?” Eamon grinned, “The same plan–just cripple the wings.”

“Well, that would make things a bit more grounded,” Theah noted while cocking her head to the side to size up the mighty dragon ahead of them.

“Alright, you go–”

But Eamon was already sprinting through the flames.

Theah exhaled sharply. “...Typical”

She stepped forward, calm amidst the chaos. Frost coiled around her boots while a vine of ice spiraled down her arm, solidifying her grip. From her left palm, an elegant bow of sculpted ice formed. The vine in her hand hardened into an arrow. She drew it back, studying the movements of the dragon down to the smallest twitch. She let out her breath, leaving the smallest trail of vapor in the air. She aimed her bow just between the wings and body of the dragon and released. The arrow twisted in the air, following its direct path to the wing of the dragon.

The dragon swiped at the arrow, but it shattered midair, showering its wings with icy shards that tore through. The dragon stepped back, digging its large talons into the ground. In retaliation, it launched another breath attack towards Eamon. Eamon ducked under a tree branch just moments before its incineration. Once the flames were at bay, there was no sign of Eamon. Theah, unfazed, felt the bloodlust of the dragon shift onto her. At first, the dragon threw its wings around, trying to create some form of lift. Its legs left a shockwave in the ground, causing Theah to stumble. The dragon then flapped its wings with one large flap to guide itself closer to its assailant. Theah raised her arms, drawing moisture from the air and freezing it solid. A pane of ice created the only barrier between her and the dragon's embrace. The dragon's claws dug deep into the wall of ice. Thea's eyes widened as her breath became shallow.

Behind the dragon, there was a flicker of darkness. A blade was embedded in its shoulder. Then another and another. Eamon appeared mid-air, and he reached out his hand. In his hand, a black liquid-like substance formed, then shaped into a sword.

“Get Away From Her!” Eamon roared.

He landed hard on the dragon's back, jamming the sword into the dragon's neck. The smell of metal filled the air as blood began covering the exposed bone. The dragon thrashed, shrieking in pain, trying to shake him off. Eamon held fast, forming a dagger in his offhand and hurling it high into the sky. In a flash, he vanished.

Wind howled in his ears, masking the sound of his heartbeat. He reappeared above the dragon, descending like an arrow about to hit its target. The dagger expanded into a broadsword mid-fall, its blackened edge reflecting the glare in the dragon's eyes. With a shout, he drove the sword into the beast's skull.

The dragon let out one final, choked roar before collapsing, its body leaving shockwaves in the ground. Eamon tumbled down after it, hitting the cold soil like a bead of water falling leaf to leaf.

“I... did it,” Eamon mumbled, barely able to make words.

She saved him from his past. Now he’ll burn the world to save her.

Eamon was a reckless boy with nothing—until Theah took him in and trained him to use his aura, a rare power born from the bond between strength and emotion. But when Theah is kidnapped by a mysterious assassin faction, Eamon is left broken, furious, and alone.

Masked and desperate, he takes on a new identity: Shadow.

What starts as a rescue mission unravels into a dark journey of grief, rage, and truths too painful to face. As he follows the trail, Eamon begins to question everything—his powers, his past, and the person Theah used to be.

This story is a work in progress and each chapter is a early draft.
