Elias ran as fast as he could, Eva cradled in his arms. The forest whipped past in a blur, the branches scraping against his skin. He ignored the pain, his focus solely on reaching Maggie Abernathy's mill. Every breath was a prayer, every step a desperate plea for Eva to hold on.
He broke through the tree line and saw the mill in the distance, its crumbling silhouette stark against the overcast sky. Smoke curled from the chimney, and a faint light flickered from within. He pushed himself harder, his muscles burning with exertion.
He reached the gate and staggered through, his legs threatening to give way beneath him. He stumbled up the path to the mill's front door and pounded on it with his fist.
"Maggie! Open up! It's Elias!" he shouted, his voice hoarse.
The door creaked open, revealing Maggie Abernathy, her face etched with concern. Her gaze fell on Eva, and her eyes widened in alarm.
"Bring her inside," she said, stepping aside.
Elias carried Eva into the mill, his heart sinking at the sight of the interior. It was even more dilapidated than he remembered. Dust motes danced in the faint light, illuminating cobwebs and decaying furniture. The air was thick with the scent of herbs and something else, something musty and ancient.
Maggie led him to a small room in the back of the mill, a space filled with shelves of jars and bottles containing strange and unsettling ingredients. A cauldron bubbled over a low fire, emitting a pungent aroma.
"Lay her down on the table," Maggie instructed, gesturing to a worn wooden surface.
Elias gently placed Eva on the table, his hand lingering on her cheek. Her skin was pale and clammy, her breathing shallow. He felt a surge of guilt, knowing that he was responsible for putting her in this danger.
Maggie began to examine Eva, her touch surprisingly gentle. She ran her hands over her body, muttering incantations under her breath.
"She's been hit with raw magic," Maggie said, her voice grim. "Powerful magic. It's burning her from the inside out."
Elias clenched his fists, his rage simmering beneath the surface. "Can you heal her?"
Maggie hesitated. "I can try. But it will be difficult. The magic is strong, and it's intertwined with her own blood. I'll need time, and I'll need ingredients."
"I'll get you whatever you need," Elias said, his voice urgent. "Just tell me what to do."
Maggie nodded. "First, I need wolfsbane. Fresh wolfsbane. It grows in the Shadowfen, east of here. It's a dangerous place, filled with dark magic. But it's the only thing that can counteract the energy burning through her."
Elias didn't hesitate. "I'll go," he said. "Now."
"Be careful," Maggie warned. "The Shadowfen is a place of shadows and illusions. Trust nothing you see, and listen to everything you hear. And do not linger."
Elias nodded, his mind already racing. He turned to leave, but then he hesitated, glancing back at Eva.
"Watch over her," he said, his voice soft. "Don't let anything happen to her."
Maggie gave him a knowing look. "I will," she said. "But you should know, boy. This girl... she's more than just a human. She has power, a power that could change everything."
Elias stared at her, his mind filled with questions. But he didn't have time to ask them. He had to get the wolfsbane.
He turned and ran, disappearing into the darkness.
Eva drifted in and out of consciousness, her mind filled with fragmented images and distorted sounds. She saw flashes of the fight in the clearing, the snarling faces of the rogue werewolves, the surge of energy that coursed through her veins. She heard Elias's voice, calling her name, filled with panic and desperation.
She felt pain, a searing, burning pain that consumed her body. It was as if she were being burned alive from the inside out.
Then, she saw Aric. He was standing in a field of flowers bathed in moonlight. He was smiling and beckoning her to come closer. But as she reached out to him, the flowers withered and died, and the moon turned blood red.
She jerked awake, gasping for air. Her body was drenched in sweat, her muscles trembling. She looked around, disoriented. She was lying on a hard wooden table in a dimly lit room. The air was thick with the scent of herbs and something else, something musty and ancient.
Maggie Abernathy stood beside her, stirring a cauldron over a low fire. She glanced at Eva, her expression unreadable.
"You're awake," she said, her voice flat.
"Where am I?" Eva asked, her voice weak. "What happened?"
"You're in my mill," Maggie replied. "You were hit with raw magic. It nearly killed you."
Eva struggled to sit up, but a wave of pain washed over her, forcing her back down.
"Elias," she said, her voice urgent. "Where's Elias?"
"He's gone to get something I need to heal you," Maggie replied. "He'll be back."
Eva stared at her, her mind racing. She remembered the rogue werewolves, the fight in the clearing, the surge of energy that had coursed through her veins. She remembered hitting Elias with her magic and he had been somehow protected by it. More worried now, she struggled to talk again.
"I almost hit Elias, and I'm worried now, what kind of magic do I have? what if I hurt someone on accident?
Maggie looked at her grimly, saying nothing for a bit..
"You have the power to heal, but also the power to destroy, you just need to learn to control these powers" She tells her, a somber look on her face.
Eva stared at her, completely still for a minute, then the silence was broken by a low moan that Eva let out due to her pain. Her thoughts were interrupted by her pain, the pain almost becoming unbearable.
"Just rest, you need time to recover. I applied a bandage to help with the burning" Maggie added, trying to comfort her.
Eva looks down to notice her right arm covered in a thick bandage with a strange goo dripping out of it. She looks back at Maggie, with a horrified and disgusted look on here face.
"Is that what I think it is?" Eva asked curiously.
In a monotone voice, Maggie replied "I used a strange mixture to cover your arm to stop the burn faster."
Eva nodded, not sure what to say.
They sat in silence for a few minutes, as Eva dozed off again in her dreams. All she kept thinking about was the dream land of moon lit flowers that Aric had shown her in her dreams. All she could think about, was making sure it never withers and dies.
