Moonbound: The Blood of Ashwood

Chapter Seven: The Shadowfen

Chapter Seven: The Shadowfen

Jul 01, 2025

The Shadowfen was a place of perpetual twilight, a swamp where the sun never dared to shine. Twisted trees clawed at the sky, their branches draped with moss that dripped with a strange, phosphorescent glow. The air hung heavy with the scent of decay and the whispers of unseen things.

Elias moved through the swamp with caution, his senses on high alert. He'd hunted in these woods since he was a boy, but the Shadowfen was different. The very air vibrated with a dark magic that made his skin crawl.

He knew the dangers of this place. Illusions that could drive a man mad. Creatures that lurked beneath the murky water, waiting to drag the unwary to their doom. And the whispers... the constant, insidious whispers that promised power and hinted at long-forgotten secrets.

He pushed the whispers aside, focusing on his task. He had to find the wolfsbane. Eva's life depended on it.

He followed the faintest of trails, an overgrown path that wound its way deeper into the swamp. The ground was soft and treacherous beneath his feet, sucking at his boots with every step. He could feel the eyes of unseen creatures watching him, their gaze cold and calculating.

He reached a stagnant pool, its surface covered in a thick layer of algae. Bubbles rose from the depths, releasing a foul-smelling gas. And that is when he heard it: a voice, soft and seductive, whispering his name.

"Elias... Elias Greyback..."

He stopped, his hand instinctively reaching for the knife at his hip. "Who's there?" he demanded, his voice echoing through the swamp.

The voice chuckled, a low, throaty sound that sent shivers down his spine. "Don't be afraid, Elias. I'm a friend. I know what you're looking for."

A figure emerged from the shadows, a woman with long, flowing hair and eyes that glowed with an unnatural light. She was beautiful, almost ethereal, but there was something unsettling about her beauty, something cold and predatory.

"Who are you?" Elias asked, suspicion lacing his voice.

"Call me Nyx," she purred, her voice like velvet. "I am the spirit of this place. I know all the secrets of the Shadowfen. I can help you find what you seek."

"I need wolfsbane," Elias said, cutting to the chase.

Nyx smiled, a slow, knowing smile that made Elias's skin crawl. "Wolfsbane is a dangerous plant. It's not meant for mortal hands."

"I need it to heal someone," Elias replied. "Someone who's been hurt by magic."

Nyx's eyes narrowed slightly. "Magic is a dangerous thing, Elias. Once you dabble in it, it never lets you go."

"I don't care about magic," Elias said. "I just want to save her life."

Nyx tilted her head, considering him. "You care for this human, don't you? More than you should."

Elias hesitated. He knew he was walking a dangerous line, revealing his feelings to a creature like Nyx. But he couldn't deny the truth. He did care for Eva. More than he had ever cared for anyone.

"What does it matter to you?" he asked, trying to deflect her gaze.

"It matters because you are a werewolf, Elias Greyback. You are bound by honor and tradition. You are meant to protect your Pack, not to endanger it for the sake of a human."

"This human is different," Elias protested. "She has power. Power that could save us all."

"Power comes with a price," Nyx said, her voice hardening. "And the price is often higher than you think."

She stepped closer to him, her hand reaching out to touch his cheek. "I can give you what you need, Elias. I can help you heal this human. But you must promise me something in return."

"What do you want?" Elias asked, his suspicion growing.

Nyx smiled, a slow, seductive smile. "I want you to embrace your true nature, Elias. To cast aside the shackles of Pack law and tradition. I want you to become the werewolf you were always meant to be."

Elias stared at her, his mind reeling. He knew what she was asking. She wanted him to abandon his Pack, to embrace the wild, untamed side of his nature. She wanted him to become a rogue.

He clenched his fists, his internal conflict raging. He had always struggled with the rigid rules of the Pack, the constant pressure to conform. He yearned for freedom, for the chance to live life on his own terms.

But he also knew that the Pack was all that stood between order and chaos. Without the Pack, the werewolves would descend into savagery, preying on humans and each other.

He couldn't abandon his Pack, not even for Eva.

"I can't," he said, his voice firm.

Nyx's eyes flashed with anger. "You disappoint me, Elias. I thought you were stronger than this."

"I am strong," Elias retorted. "Strong enough to resist your temptations."

Nyx laughed, a harsh, grating sound. "Very well. Have it your way. But don't say I didn't warn you."

She stepped aside, revealing a patch of wolfsbane growing in the shadow of a twisted tree. The plant was dark and ominous, its leaves covered in a fine layer of thorns.

"Take it," Nyx said. "But be warned. This plant is as dangerous as it is potent. Use it wisely."

Elias approached the wolfsbane with caution, his hand protected by a thick leather glove. He carefully harvested the plant, placing it in a pouch he had brought with him.

"Thank you," he said, turning to leave.

"Don't thank me yet, Elias Greyback," Nyx called after him. "The path ahead is filled with peril. And you will face choices that will test you to your very core."

Elias didn't reply. He simply turned and ran, the wolfsbane clutched tight in his hand. He had a promise to keep. He had to save Eva.

As he hurried back through the Shadowfen, the whispers grew louder, more insistent. They promised him power, freedom, and the chance to shape his own destiny. But they also warned him of betrayal, of loss, and of the darkness that lay hidden within his own heart.

Elias pushed the whispers aside, focusing on his goal. He had to reach Maggie's mill. He had to save Eva.

But as he ran, he couldn't help but wonder if he was already too late. If the darkness had already taken hold.
