The first rays of dawn crept through the cracks in the mill's aged walls, painting the room in a soft, ethereal glow. Eva's eyes fluttered open, and she blinked against the light, her mind still hazy with sleep. She was lying on the same rough wooden table, the thin blanket pulled up to her chin.
She glanced to her side and saw Elias asleep on the stool, his head resting on his arms, his dark hair tousled. He looked younger, more vulnerable in sleep, the worries and responsibilities of his world temporarily lifted from his shoulders. In the calm and quiet he looked even more handsome. A calmness grew through her as she thought about not just her own pack, but Elias's safety as well.
A surge of protectiveness washed over her, a fierce determination to keep him safe from the dangers that lurked in the shadows. She reached out and gently brushed a few strands of hair from his face, her fingers lingering on his cheek. His skin was warm and smooth beneath her touch, a jolt of electricity coursing through her veins.
She quickly brushed her hand away, remembering what Maggie had said about a "gift that she did not ask for" as she did not want the power she got to eventually drag Elias in the problems and complications she would need to deal with.
She sat up slowly, wincing as a dull ache flared in her muscles. She was still weak, but the burning sensation that had consumed her body the night before was gone, replaced by a lingering exhaustion. She swung her legs over the side of the table and stood, her head spinning for a moment before she steadied herself.
She reached out and shook Elias awake, and told him it was his time finally wake up.
"Elias," she whispered, gently shaking his shoulder once before continuing and getting a little ruthless, "Elias Wake up!"
He stirred, groaning softly, and then his eyes fluttered open, focusing on her with a mixture of surprise and relief. He reached out this time, wrapping his fingers with hers.
"Eva," he said softly and looking concerned, "How do you feel? Do you need anything to take?"
She smiled, and gently stroked him on the cheek, teasing him back, "I'm fine, you should be the one resting" She quickly sat up again and added, "Anyhow, I'm going to ask you to watch over me while I go out and walk."
Elias's eyes widened in slight panic, and his voice increased. "No, it is far too dangerous for you."
Eva shook her head, and reassured, "I have been indoors for far too long, and I feel I need to step outside so I can familiarize myself with the magic that has been provided for me. I want to know more about it, but I'm not asking for a magic class here, I just want to explore around."
She understood his concerns, but both needed to understand her hidden strength and powers so they could understand why Aric's powers were showing up now, and why she was still alive. There were questions far too much to discuss.
"I only ask that you protect me, I will not go out from this land so you will know I will be inside your range." and with those final words spoken, there was no stopping Eva, she truly wanted to know her own power.
Elias watched as she quickly left, and could only sigh at her stubbornness, she reminded him of himself.
Eva took her footsteps to walk around the forests. The birds danced around her and the plants that had been there her entire life gave her calmness. She reached out a hand to feel the leaves of a large tree that sheltered her with cool and calm air.
The world felt connected to her now, the trees she had known her whole life had more detail than she could feel. "Magic huh?" she whispered to herself.
Eva chuckled and looked at her palms, she knew that nothing would happen if she just stared at her hands. "I just feel so normal, there is no change to me, how could this power suddenly boost in me?" She continued to walk and think.
She remembered what the elder wolf from the Rogue Pack had said: I did not kill you, because your blood made my magic work to its finest ever."
Eva could not help, but stop walking and just look up to the skies.
As the winds flew, through her subconscious, she imagined a warm and safe room were winds did not exist. She imagined people huddling, she imagined the food, she imagined stories.
She opened her eyes and realized how strong her imagination was, now stronger than it used to be. "Imagination!" Eva yelled out "Magic needs imagination. Now that I know my blood is being powered by some ancestral ancient magic imagination must be my trigger."
Eva smiled, and concentrated on imagining the impossible, she tried to lift even the tiniest pebble without touching. Time went by, but nothing was lifting, as her frustrations grew and as she was about to give up she looked down and noticed that a leaf was slowly curling and slowly lifting, and she had focused on the leaf.
"It works?"
That was all it took, the leaf was now levitating and as new winds would come in to blow away the leaf, it would quickly catch up and try to lift up again.
"So everything around needs me to know what I want and what is possible to focus"
Just as she was testing out her new power, a memory struck her, one of the faces she was not able to remember. She was at a party, lots of noble-ish looking people with wealth, she heard a name. "Lillith BloodMoon"
That struck her, her vision went blank and as she came back to reality all she could feel was a surge of frustration and anger. She looked at the skies and her eyes grew wide "This magic cannot exist!"
She thought about levitating the leaf, and she pictured throwing it super hard as a blade, and as she waved her magic to launch the leaf it went swerving through the air at a speed that would knock a normal human unconscious.
"I see. The magic enhances what I see as possible using my memories and imagination to calculate reality.... This could be unstoppable"
As she tried concentrating on other possible memories the headaches returned, her power right now was not strong enough to explore her own past.
She snapped back from her day dreaming and knew it was her time to go. She had promised Elias that she would stay indoors and close but she was running out of breath being chased by all these different thoughts.
She met Elias back again from where she had been staying these past nights, Elias quickly came to hug her, it was a warm embrace that helped her calm down.
"Did everything go well?"
Eva nodded, "It all went successfully. The memories returned, the feelings felt again everything felt clear but I will not explore my memories until I know I am strong enough to prevent brain damage."
"Brain damage?"
"Yes" Eva quickly said "With my new powers, it also means I can harm myself, the memories can be very damaging to me, so I must prioritize my strength before exploring but for now rest is important."
Eva went back into the room and took Elias with her, she wanted to sleep and heal more so that the headache could go away and that she could think about what the face she had finally remembered meant.
