Destined Ties

Luna

Luna

Jul 12, 2025

I piped icing onto a batch of cupcakes, my hands moving with precision as I gazed out the window at the picturesque market square. The aroma of freshly baked bread wafted through the streets of Ely, Cambridgeshire, enticing passersby to step into our cozy bakery. My family's bakery. My heart swelled with pride as I worked alongside my parents.

"Dad asked me to help with the afternoon orders," I said, nodding as I moved to assist my mother.

As we worked, my mind wandered to my dreams – dreams of attending Queen Mary University of London, of becoming a lawyer, and making a difference in my community. I felt a surge of excitement mixed with a dash of nervousness. Could I really do this?
Just then, the bell above the bakery door jingled, signaling the arrival of customers. My friends, Fin, Charlotte, and Aria, walked in, their bright smiles and chatter infusing the bakery with warmth.

"Hey, Lu! We brought your favorite coffee," Aria said, holding out a cup. "We're here to help with the afternoon rush."
I grinned, feeling grateful for my friends. "Thanks, guys! I need a break. Fin, can you help me with these cupcakes?"

Fin, tall and charming, grinned back at me. "Of course, Lu. I'm your man for all things sweet."

Charlotte, practical and organized, began helping my mother with the orders. "I'll take care of the customers,  You can focus on baking."

Aria, free-spirited and artistic, wandered around the bakery, admiring the decorations. "Your bakery is so cozy, Lu. I love the vibe."

As we worked and chatted, my thoughts turned to the challenges ahead. Could I secure a spot at Queen Mary? Would I be able to balance my studies with my family's bakery?

"Guys, have you thought about our futures?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

Fin, Charlotte, and Aria exchanged glances. "We've been discussing our options," Fin said. "I'm thinking of applying to Cambridge. Charlotte's looking at universities in London."

Aria nodded. "I'm considering art schools. But Lu, you're the one with the big dreams. Queen Mary is a great opportunity. You deserve it."

I smiled, feeling a surge of determination. "Thanks, guys. I won't let you down."

As the afternoon wore on, the bakery filled with customers, and my friends helped my family manage the rush. Despite the chaos, I felt a sense of peace, knowing I had friends who supported my dreams. As the sun began to set, my friends said their goodbyes, promising to meet up soon. I watched them leave, feeling grateful for their friendship and the memories we'd shared.

"Luna, love, you're lost in thought," my mother said, smiling. "What's on your mind?"

I hesitated, then shared my concerns about Queen Mary and my future. My parents listened attentively, offering words of encouragement and support.

"We believe in you, Luna," my father said. "You'll make it happen. You worked hard ."

I nodded, feeling a renewed sense of determination. I knew that with my family's support and my friends' encouragement, I could overcome any obstacle and achieve my dream .

As I navigated my college life, I juggled multiple responsibilities. My part-time job at the library became a sanctuary, a place where I could escape the chaos of academic pressures. Working at the front desk, I'd check out books for students, answer queries, and sometimes even help with research projects. The library's quiet atmosphere and the smell of old books were comforting. However, my grades began to suffer due to the demanding schedule.

Despite the challenges, I cherished my time at the library. I'd often sneak in a quick study session during breaks or between assisting patrons. My colleagues were friendly, and we'd chat about our lives, sharing stories and laughter. It was during these moments that I realized the importance of time management.

On weekends, I'd return to my family's bakery, helping my parents with the afternoon rush. The aroma of freshly baked bread and pastries filled the air, transporting me back to a simpler time. My college friends, Fin, Charlotte, and Aria, would often join me, lending a helping hand and providing moral support. We'd work together seamlessly, our banter and laughter infusing the bakery with warmth.

As the weeks went by, I struggled to balance my academic and personal life. My grades continued to slip, and I faced pressure from my parents to perform better. I knew I needed to find a better balance, but it seemed like an insurmountable task.

One day, as I was working at the library, I received an email from my parents. They expressed their concerns about my grades and encouraged me to focus on my studies. I felt a pang of guilt and determination. I knew I had to do better.

With renewed resolve, I began to prioritize my studies. I'd spend more time reviewing notes, attending study groups, and seeking help from my professors. The library became an even more crucial part of my academic life, providing a quiet and resource-rich environment for me to focus.

As I worked towards improving my grades, my friends and family remained supportive. Fin, Charlotte, and Aria would study with me, offering guidance and encouragement. My parents continued to work hard at the bakery, proud of my determination to succeed.

I realized that achieving my dreams wouldn't be easy, but with the right mindset and support, I could overcome any obstacle. Queen Mary University of London still loomed on the horizon, a reminder of my aspirations. I was determined to make it happen, no matter what challenges lay ahead.

I sat nervously in front of the laptop, surrounded by my family and friends, my heart racing with anticipation. We were all waiting for one thing - the scholarship results for Queen Mary University of London. My parents, Fin, Charlotte, and Aria were all trying to reassure me, but I could sense their own anxiety.

"You're going to get it, Lu," Fin said, placing a reassuring hand on my shoulder. "You've worked so hard for this."

"I know, but what if I don't?" I replied, my voice barely above a whisper. "What if I'm not good enough?"

Charlotte shook her head. "You're more than good enough, Lu. You're amazing. Queen Mary University of London would be lucky to have you."

Aria nodded in agreement. "And you've got a great shot at that scholarship. You've got the grades, the talent, and the determination. What more could they ask for?"

My parents smiled, trying to reassure me, but I could see the worry in their eyes. They'd sacrificed so much for my education, and I knew they'd do anything to support me. But I also knew that I couldn't rely solely on them. I had to find a way to make it work.

As we waited, the tension in the room grew thicker. We'd applied for the scholarship online, and now all we could do was wait. I checked the laptop screen for what felt like the hundredth time, my eyes scanning the webpage for any sign of the results.

Suddenly, the webpage refreshed, and a link appeared. My heart skipped a beat as I clicked on it. We all leaned in, holding our collective breath as the page loaded.
And then, the results appeared. My heart sank as I scanned the page, my eyes searching for the words I'd been hoping to see. And then, I saw them - "Congratulations, you have been awarded a 50% scholarship to Queen Mary University of London."

We all erupted into cheers, hugging each other tightly. I'd done it. I'd gotten the scholarship. But as the excitement died down, reality set in. A 50% scholarship meant I'd still have to cover half of the tuition fees, living expenses, and other costs on my own. The amount was daunting, and I knew my family couldn't afford it.

My parents looked at me with determination in their eyes. "We'll find a way, Lu " my mother said . "We'll work hard and make it happen."

I smiled, feeling a surge of gratitude and love for my family. I knew that with their support and my determination, I could overcome any obstacle and achieve my dreams.

We decided to host a small congratulations party at the same spot where we'd waited for the scholarship results. My family and friends were overjoyed, and we wanted to celebrate this milestone together.

As we sat around the table, surrounded by balloons and a "Congratulations Lu" banner, my mother brought out a tray of delicious snacks and drinks. We cheered and clapped, still grinning from ear to ear.

"To Lu, our brilliant scholar!" Fin exclaimed, raising his glass in a toast. "May this be just the beginning of your amazing journey!"

We all cheered and clinked our glasses together. I felt overwhelmed with gratitude and happiness.

"Thanks, guys," I said, my voice trembling with emotion. "I couldn't have done it without your support and encouragement. This means the world to me."
Charlotte smiled. "We're so proud of you, Lu. You're going to do great things at Queen Mary University of London."

Aria nodded. "And with a 50% scholarship, you're one step closer to achieving your dreams."

My parents beamed with pride, hugging me tightly. "We're so proud of you " my mother said. "You've worked hard for this, and it's all paying off."

As we celebrated, I felt a sense of joy and contentment. This was just the beginning of my journey, and I knew that with my family and friends by my side, I could overcome any obstacle. We laughed, joked, and shared stories, enjoying each other's company. It was a moment I'd never forget, a celebration of my achievement and the start of a new chapter in my life.

As we finished our snacks and drinks, Fin stood up and said, "Let's take a group photo to commemorate this moment!"

We all gathered around, smiling and laughing, as Fin took a photo of us with my scholarship acceptance letter in the background.

"Cheese!" Aria shouted, and we all grinned, capturing the moment forever.

I looked around at my loved ones, feeling grateful for their support and love. This was just the beginning .
Two months will flow by in a whirlwind of activity. I will be leaving for London soon, and my friends and I were all busy with our respective plans. Fin was preparing for his Cambridge interview, Charlotte was finalizing her university applications, and Aria was getting ready to showcase her art portfolio.

As for me, I spent most of my time at the family bakery, cherishing every moment with my parents. We'd spend hours talking about my future, and they'd offer words of wisdom and encouragement. I knew they'd miss me dearly, but they were also proud of the person I was becoming. I began to think about how I'd manage the remaining 50% of my university fees. I considered getting a part-time job at the bakery in London , but I quickly realized that it wouldn't be enough. I'd still need some more money to cover all the expenses.

"Maybe I could take out a small loan?" I thought to myself. "Or perhaps there are other scholarships or grants that I could apply for?"

My parents and I sat down to discuss the financials, and we came up with a plan. We'd work together to manage the expenses, and I'd look into part-time job opportunities in London that wouldn't interfere with my studies.

As the days went by, I grew more excited about my upcoming adventure. I knew it wouldn't be easy, but I was determined to make the most of this opportunity. I'd work hard, study diligently, and make new friends.

The bakery became a place of comfort and nostalgia for me. I'd help my parents with the daily tasks, and we'd chat about my plans for the future. They'd offer advice and support, and I knew that they'd always be there for me.

As the countdown to my departure began, I felt a mix of emotions. I was excited to start this new chapter of my life, but I was also sad to leave my family and friends behind. I knew that I'd stay in touch with them, but it wouldn't be the same as being there in person.

I took a deep breath, knowing that I had to be strong and focused. I'd make the most of this opportunity, and I'd make my family proud. The thought of London, Queen Mary University, and the adventures that awaited me filled me with anticipation and excitement.

"Two months will fly by," my mother said, smiling. "Before you know it, you'll be settled in London, making new friends, and pursuing your dreams."

I nodded, feeling a sense of determination wash over me. I was ready for this new chapter, and I knew that I'd make the most of it.
