"Come on," Phoebe yelled, "You got this! You can fly!"
Up in that tree, May held tight to the thick trunk. The ground below—while not far—was still looming, waiting for her to tumble. "No thanks!" Her arms and legs both seemed to tremble at the same time.
"Hm, maybe I overestimated your abilities."
"Yes, I'd say you did!" Her heart thundered along, in a way that she would eventually compare it to some Katy Perry song on Instagram.
"Just trust yourself!"
"That's been my problem so far!"
"Nu-huh!" Phoebe corrected. "That was trusting me!"
May gulped; she wasn't sure if she was more frightened by the idea of the fall, or the possibility that she actually could lapse through a portal into a totally different world.
"Just believe in yourself!" Phoebe shouted. She had her hands up on either side of her mouth.
"What does that even mean?"
"I'm not sure! If that doesn't work, believe in someone who acts like less of a pussy! That or Jesus, I guess!"
That was when she remembered her dream.
Slowly leaning outward, May recited the lyrics to that Flo Rida song in her head that she would one day post, claiming that they gave her strength in hard times. Trying to believe in something, she took a literal leap. Screaming all the way down, May found that she did not fall. Rather, she glided a much longer length. She might have easily cascaded to her feet had it not been for silly self-doubt and godforsaken gravity. Rather, she had a rather harsh ass-first landing, instead.
Rushing to her, Phoebe hardly looked like she was trying to contain her excitement. "I can't believe it!" she said. "You're a files!"
"Um, I don't think that word was meant to be used in that way. . ."
"English is my language so I can bastard it up however I please." Following a theatrical bow, Phoebe extended a hand to pull May up.
Then? They tried again.
This time, May actually glided to a graceful landing. That confidence—and the photo Phoebe took and promptly showed her which looked godawful—was enough to inspire May to try a third time. On the fourth try, she glided twice as far before landing. Attempt number seven was where once landing, she did so in a run. On nine, that run resulted in her taking a leap, continuing her glide into the air for several more feet.
Filled to the brim with exhilirated adrenaline, May was only living for each subsequent time that Phoebe would command, "Again, again!"
On attempt number twenty-one, May realized that she had been gliding through the air paralell to the tree for the longest time. It was pretty damn close to flying. In fact, she didn't land for about two whole minutes. Once she did, she excitedly asked Phoebe, "Did you see that!"
"You were flying, I saw it!"
The two friends shared a hug for no reason other than to hug.
However, Phoebe was the one to burst their bubble when she remarked, "Still no portal, though."
"Shit. . ."
Returning to their tent for her papers, Phoebe came back and said, "All I can gather is that they leaped out of a tree and right into the damn portal!"
"And you're sure there weren't any other factors?" May asked.
"Positive!" Phoebe examined the papers she had that were once part of many books. Then, she remarked, "Okay, actually I have no clue."
