It resembled that of the rooms from cop shows that come on TV all the way down to the metal table with bars on the side to handcuff criminals to. The only moveable furniture being the chairs in which the interrogator and criminal sat across from one another.
Cuffed to said immovable table was the same sandy brown dog that they had been discussing beforehand. Displaying all the signs of an agitated dog with no escape with his ears flat, teeth bared though he appeared to be trying to reign that in while he drummed his fingers on the table. It didn't do much however, even a calmer demeanor wouldn't make this go by faster, Amity knew this from many cases before.
'Damn government pests, leavin' me to die of boredom.' he thought.
"I'VE BEEN IN THIS GODDAMN ROOM FOREVER!! IS ANYBODY COMING BACK?!" he shouts suddenly, standing up.
Silence, just the echo of his shout and the screech of his chair being pushed back could be heard.
"I HAVE TO USE THE BATHROOM!" he adds after a second in hopes that would garner a response to his outbursts.
Nothing.
"How long has he been in there anyway?" Amity asked, turning to Scarlett.
"Since last night." she answered.
"Ah...I see." Amity replied. 'That could be an issue.'
"What?" Scarlett asked, seeing her mood shift. "Is there an issue or something?"
She nodded. "If he's been under questioning for so long, his thoughts could be clouded with the desire to leave or to hurt those not listening."
"Then can't you see further into his thoughts th-" Scarlett asked.
"Bullcrap, thugs like these don't get distracted like that. They just pretend so they can brag about not giving us information."
They turn at the interruption to see a tall dark brown deer with a muzzle covered in specks of silver and white from age. He had one partially torn ear that went well with his overall unfriendly demeanor, from how tired he is or if that's just how he was, it was u for debate for sure.
"Out loud or in their heads." he continued after taking a drink from the steaming hot cup of coffee in his hand.
"I know that, but not if they-" Amity began to argue.
However he was quick to silence. "Listen here kitty, you may be able to peek into animas' heads but I know criminals. It doesn't matter how tired they are, they're all full of themself."
She scowled at him.
"And nothing will change that." he jabbed a finger at her. "So you just do your job and get what we need and I'll do mine."
Scarlett put her hand on Amity's shoulder, seeing the pink feline fuming. 'Don't let Mr Avas get to you.'
On a normal day that would help her relax but it was obvious Scarlett agreed with the grouchy old buck, making it more agitating. She turned to say something to her friend but took pause. She remembered the file on the dog and the overall seriousness of a Syndicate threat. Amity sighed eventually and nodded, even though mentally she was ready to start a fight about this.
Mr Ava meanwhile had already decided the conversation was over and went to the door leading into the interrogation room. Amity in her agitation peaked into his thoughts, seeing them full of the same annoyance and anger that she felt. Annoyance to her, to their higher ups, and to this dumb criminal making things more difficult than it needs to be.
'We can get the information just fine without her...if we could only use more force.' he was thinking. 'We don't need a damn civilian to do my job.'
'That wouldn't align with GPAT's morals.' Amity thought. 'Besides I do it faster...ya old man.'
She smirked watching him as he vented to himself.
The deer sighed, pulling out a seat while the sandy dog watched him. Amity frowned. 'He might know that too...still too prideful though.'
"Let's just get this over with." she sighed as well.
"Agreed." Scarlett responded, feeling bad for Amity's plight.
Scarlett changed the screen on her ipad to that of a note's app, fully prepared to type out any
and all information that Amity relays to her. However how well Amity would do that was up for question as the tiredness of the feline became so much more apparent in the glow of the tablet. It was obvious she found this as a waste of time...or perhaps her restless nights were catching up to her.
Both were possible and Scarlett knew that. 'I'll have to see how things are later.' she thought, turning to the window to watch alongside Amity.
The interrogation seemed to go on forever as it was just back and forth much like before Amity showed up, however now with extra information coming from Amity there felt like an end in sight this time. Or that’s how Scarlett and Mr Avas were putting out in their thought patterns. Amity was monotone as she repeated the thoughts she was hearing just like any other day.
Complaints.
Insults.
Threats.
Annoyingly, everything she said would be there after this long of being questioned.
Amity was beginning to wonder how GPAT faired with getting information in the past, since this seemed to be leading nowhere. Even with threats of imprisonment not working on him, it's as if he didn't care what happened one way or another.
'Doesn't he have a life outside this whole mess? Why would he protect the Syndicate?' Amity wondered. 'Surely they brought that up before I got here.'
"Dammit! This isn't getting us anywhere." Mr Ava growled.
He'd returned to the room while Amity was lost in her own thoughts, thankfully during the end of the session by the looks of it. Amity was still reading the thoughts around her while focusing on her own usually, being able to articulate them was another story. Thankfully Scarlett didn't seem to bring notice to the pink feline trailing off a moment ago when she did focus on her own thoughts for once.
Amity turned to face Mr Ava, a smile creeping on her face in silent victory.
"You have anything, cat?" the deer asked, seeming to get more mad from her grin.
"Unfortunately, no...just more complaining." she said, trying to hide how happy she was to be right about this.
He shot her a hard glare that caused her to step back in fright, before he spoke. "We need him to confess or else we'll have to return him to the police force...and they'll only charge him for the crimes he had been caught doing, nothing more."
"...oh." Amity said softly.
"Yeah." Mr Ava replied dryly.
There was silence amongst the three anima as they tried to think of a solution, Amity also trying to help brainstorm a plan. She had a desire to help them in any way she can or at least lighten the mood a tad, but it was unlikely either would be very useful.
But then after a moment it hit her. "Oh! You said guys like him like to brag, right?"
"Yeah, even in there thick skulls. What of it?" he answered.
"Then why not pretend you do have to give him back!" Amity smiled, feeling clever. "I can listen while HE is feeling clever as if he'd won."
The deer visually seemed to perk up at that. "Hmm...perhaps it could work."
She stood up straighter, overjoyed at finally being listened to that day. Beside her Scarlett, whom had not said anything for most of this conversation smiled as well. This day had been a long one so seeing things seeming to go better was a nice change.
"We'll give it a shot." Mr Ava said, but his expression hardened as he added. "BUT, if this doesn't work, we'll try OTHER methods and YOU will not breathe a word of it."
Immediately the pink feline shrank back and nervously said. "O-of course."
His thoughts didn’t explain it either as he was well aware of Amity's habit of peaking into thoughts purely for curiosity’s sake. '...whatever that means. I don't want to find out.' she thought.
_ _ _
Mr Ava was the one to escort the dog to the cells with Amity and Scarlett following close behind. The cells were old and rested somewhat deep within the building, making the journey to them longer than necessary for a simple holding but just right for their original purpose - keeping truly awful anima locked up. GPAT was started and still ran as a defense against terrorists, war criminals, and any other anima that was so black hearted.
Amity knew this but didn't know the details of GPAT's history, but the older parts of the building did give some semblance of it. Such as the cells, they still very much like how they were almost a century ago with minor tweaks to modernize them.
'They just need to overhaul this entire place.' Amity thought as she looked around.
"God this place reeks, what'd you keep in here? Corpses?" he gagged.
"Shut it mutt," Mr Ava snapped. "You hated the interrogation room, so now you get a cozy little cell to wait in."
"More like dungeon." the dog's nose wrinkled in disgust.
Mr Ava rolled his eyes and shoved him into the cell. He stumbled forward with a yelp and before he could get up to protest the treatment the cell door was slammed shut with a bang. The dog paused though before saying anything.
'...wait a minute.' he thought.
"Get up, we're going to take the cuffs off." Scarlett ordered monotonously.
Amity could tell already that the plan was working as a smile spread on the sandy brown dog's face. He stepped over to the bars to get closer to the three GPAT members, he held his wrists out as requested.
"If you're using this butt ugly place, it must mean you have to give me back. Doesn't it?" he asked as Mr Ava begrudgingly removed the cuffs temporarily.
"Ha! It is!" he laughed when ignored.
The deer grit his teeth angrily. "Keep laughing, we'll get what we want from you far before you'll ever be picked up."
"I knew it." the sandy canine laughed, backing away. "Your silence said it all. Some petty criminal such as me ACTUALLY outwitted the oh so great GPAT!"
He spread his arms in triumph as he spun toward the bench. Speaking loud and joyously, this agitated both Mr Ava and Scarlett. "Thanks to you I'll be swimming in luxury and respect even IN prison. Wait 'til they hear what I have to say." he continued, dropping down onto the old bench with a shit eating grin on his face.
'This dumbass is really going to get it...I knew I was too good for him to get anything, damn deer.' the dog thought.
'If I could only get my hooves into this bastard.' Mr Ava's thoughts played out angrily as he silently fumed, watching the gloating dog in the cell.
'Man...thank goodness Ava can't read his thoughts.' Amity couldn't help but think.
"Come on, I'm having fun now." Brian said after a moment. "Try to get more info from me, one last push...be like those shitty cop shows."
"We should go," Scarlett chimed, stopping the deer from blowing a gasket. "There's paperwork that needs to be filled out."
He stood there for a moment longer before nodding. "Fine," he turned away from the cell. "This mangey canine isn't worth my time, we have to find the soldiers in town."
"Ha! Keep telling yourself that you stupid deer!" he said. However agitation still pricked at his voice and mind. ‘My name’s Brian…fuckin’ deer.’
"L-let's just go." Amity replied.
Mr Ava shrugged and without saying anything else, lead the way out of the cell block. Scarlett and Amity followed up the rear while listening to the criminal behind them continue to brag about his 'victory' over GPAT. All the while Amity listened to his thoughts which were more or less the same, only accompanied with grandeur.
Well grandeur for a criminal. It was obvious the thoughts Amity was watching were ridiculous as she unintentionally pulled a face that made her looks so done with it.
"It won't be forever, then you can return home to rest." Scarlett chimed.
Amity shook her head, returning to the moment.
"Yeah, just when you get something be sure to inform me first." Mr Ava said tired of this whole thing as well.
She nodded.
Scarlett offered the pink feline her ipad to take notes on only for it to be denied. Amity pulled out a small pocket sized notebook. "I'm a little old school."
Scarlett nodded. "Goodluck then."
Mr Ava had already walked away after making sure Amity knew to come to him first, leaving Scarlett and Amity alone. The two parted ways quietly before Amity could finally sit on a bench by the wall.
It wasn't very far from the cells but close enough to not get other thoughts mixed up with the ones Amity was required to listen in on. She reached into her purse for one of the pens she carries around and opened the notebook. Beginning the entry with what his thoughts sounded like, usually like the voice of the owner but sometimes there is more to it allowing her to distinguish it if someone else walks by and their thoughts interrupted his.
Soon enough she was just casually scribbling what she heard. Leaving out the Brian’s strange fantasies.
'...gonna make bank when I get outta here.' he thought, chuckles echoing.
'Money...nothing new for anybody honestly.' Amity thought boredly.
'...and all it took was finding a dumb rodent. HA!'
"Rodent?" she mumbled confused. "Why would the Syndicate be looking for a rodent?"
Amity wrote down this new piece of information in her notes but froze as a familiar face swept through the thoughts. A tan middle aged ferret with blotches of brown, sporting a vest and button up shirt with his familiar round glasses. Though unlike Amity, the criminal's feelings toward this mental image was that of a weak creature, someone that shouldn't be worth anybody's time.
Nothing like her opinion of a kind and caring soul that she worked with on the regular.
'How some nerdy rat is useful to them is beyond me...but who cares.'
"I'm gonna be out of here in no time." the dog cackled from the cell.
Her blood ran cold as she DID know why this particular ferret would be useful. She stood up, eyes still wide from the sudden realization that her friend was in trouble.
"They're looking for GPAT's psychologist." she breathed.
The one creature who would have information more than just missions, but the workings of GPAT and the individual soldiers. Amity started going to find Mr Ava in a brisk walk but her worry made her pick up the pace.
'We can't let them find him.' Amity thought.
