Chapter 9: So Formal

Chapter 9: So Formal

Aug 02, 2025

Kieran had been slamming the rolling chair into the wall over and over, trying to make a dent, when Tobias opened his door two days later.

"Come with me, " Tobias said before walking at his usual, urgent pace towards the elevator.

It seemed the older man was warming up to him after all, Kirian thought to himself with a smile.

He half jogged to catch up with Tobias and got into the elevator silently.

Trying for a conversation, Kirian said, "So do you live here too, or...?"

Tobias didn't respond.

They stopped on the 39th floor, Sebastian's office. Again, they walked past the guard and secretary without exchanging pleasantries and entered the room with 'Mr. Radashawn' embossed on the door.

Sebastian looked up from his laptop and paper files when they walked in and gestured for him to sit. He didn't smile but he wasn't inhospitable.

"Good afternoon, assassin, " Sebastian said, nodding at the man across from him.

"Are you always so formal?" Kirian replied with an easy smile, ignoring the greeting.

Sebastian gave him a stern look before replying, "Yes. We are at work and we have a formal relationship."

Kirian's eyes gleamed with mischief as he shot back, "I didn't know we had a relationship."

"Your immaturity is grating. I have ten minutes until my next meeting and I need to brief you." Sebastian says.

"Ooh, what kind of meeting?" Kirian asked, leaning forward in interest, "I still don't know exactly what you do here, besides babysit me while I kill people."

"That is none of you business, assassin."

"Fine, what did you want to tell me?" Kirian asked, sensing the other man's growing frustration.

"Can you handle 10 targets?" Sebastian asked bluntly.

Kirian's playful smirk turned sinister. "Oh I can do more than handle them."

Sebastian laid out the basics of the plan, handing Kirian a file with the details.

"- I'll be in the car the entire time to supervise," Sebastian finished.

Kirian had once again zoned out, but catching the last part, asked, "Why do you have to come personally every time? Not that I'm complaining."

Sebastian looked at him for a moment before quickly responding, "I still don't trust you, assassin. I can't risk delegating and having you slip away."

"Aww, you're still worried I'll leave," Kirian taunted. His grin was playful once again.

"I don't want to have to warn you again. There is no leaving until you've completed all your missions," Sebastian cautioned. His voice commanding.

Kirian leaned closer, on the edge of in his seat and put his elbows on the desk. He murmured in a lower tone, "You're not getting rid of me yet, handsome."

Sebastian's face revealed nothing. When he opened his mouth to speak, Tobias interrupted.

"It's time for your next meeting, Mr. Radashawn."

Sebastian flickered up at him before look back at Kirian's impish expression. "Read over the file carefully. Tonight will be dangerous, " He said.

He walked out of the room without warning, leaving Kirian with Tobias. Kirian stood and looked to Tobias, whose eyes held a low pressure flurry of distaste and displeasure. The older man turned swiftly and Kirian had to jog to keep up with him as he made his way to Kirian's room.

Tobias looked at Kirian as if he had something to say, but pressed him lips together tightly and closed the door firmly. Kirian heard thunder in his receding steps.

—-------------------------

Kirian and Sebastian had arrived at a parking lot for a bowling alley next to a dilapidated, seemingly abandoned warehouse.

Kirian was wearing an all black outfit with a ski-mask rolled up so his face was visible. He wore black gloves and non-slip sneakers.

"You have three hours. You will have to be very quiet, and no matter what you see, don't get distracted," Sebastian commanded.

Kirian's face was stoic, his eyes held nothing but determination. He nodded once before getting out of the car and walking directly towards the bowling alley before turning into the side alley between the two buildings.

The smell was rank. Years of beer-piss and discarded cigarette buts mixed with the greasy, rotten garbage smell coming from the bowling alley dumpster.

He ducked behind the dumpster as the back entrance to the bowling alley opened and blaring 70's music spilled out along with an employee carrying a large black trash bag.

The employee looked around cautiously before pulling out a key and opening the chained door to the warehouse. The chains jangled ominously, but came off easily and he slipped inside.

Kirian waited exactly one minute before opening the door for himself. He slipped in soundlessly and looked around for any signs of life. The room was entirely empty, save for a single dead rat. Another door stood on the opposite side of the room and Kirian slunk towards it.

He heard voices on the other side of the door and rolled down his ski mask. He pulled a chloroformed handkerchief out of his pocket.

Soon enough, the voices quietened and the bowling alley employee walked back out. Kirian pressed himself against the wall but the man didn't look anywhere other than straight ahead as he went out the other door and slammed it shut.

Kirian took a deep breath. He slipped through the interior doorway and let the door close silently behind him, his steps feather soft.

In front of him were two security guards sitting lazily in fold out chairs. In front of them were multiple monitors with security cameras. They both had walkie talkies on the desk.

Trusting his strength, Kirian gently pulled a second chloroformed handkerchief. He would have to do both at the same time.

He stayed crouched for a few seconds, planning his trajectory and trying to determine how he would keep both security guards in his arms until the chloroform kicked in. Then, he lunged.

He pressed a hand to each security guard's face and pulled them back, away from the walkies. These weren't easily domineered men. They thrashed instantly and their yelps of surprise were still heard through his hand. He hoped it was quiet enough for no one to hear. One managed to bite his hand but he didn't relent.

Soon, they had both collapsed and Kirian made quick work of duct taping their legs and arms together. He stuffed clean handkerchiefs into their mouths and slammed both of their heads with the hilt of his knife for good measure. This would have to do for now.

Finally, Kirian stood with his flash drive in hand and looked at the monitors. He froze, eyes not believing what he was seeing. Multiple private dining rooms with important looking men sitting around a table. Some already had food on their plates while others were carving out a portion for themselves.

On the tables were platters of raw, seasoned human torsos, limbs and heads.

Kirian is lost. Not literally, but in a more hippy-dippy, metaphorical sense. He has no family, no real home, and no purpose. He lives his life as a ghost, hoping his painful past doesn't come back to finish him off. But, when he's captured by a man with scars as deep as his, he's forced to stop running. Will his past come to finish him off, or will he finally find his place in the world?
