King's Gear

Chapter 2 (Team formation)

Chapter 2 (Team formation)

Aug 02, 2025

Ahmed posted numerous ads on various social media platforms searching for team members, but he couldn’t find anyone interested—especially since he didn’t offer any financial incentives, as he was looking for people genuinely passionate like himself. Everyone thought the idea was crazy; after all, how could he succeed where governments had failed? Eventually, however, he found four interested individuals.

He had intended to conduct personal interviews, but due to the small number of applicants, he skipped the process and accepted them all. The applicants were a girl named Mariam and three young men: Ali, Youssef, and Omar. Nothing about them stood out to Ahmed except Mariam’s full name, "Mariam Saeed Na'im," which he felt he had seen before. Regardless, he sent them invitations to attend their first meeting at an apartment he had rented as their headquarters.

Ahmed arrived early that day, too excited to wait for his team. He sat there, waiting for anyone to arrive, until the first person walked in and said, "Hello, I’m Ali. I received your invitation."

Ahmed smiled and replied, "Yes, I’ve been waiting for you. You can sit here until the others arrive," pointing to a large table in the middle of the room. Ali was of average height, slightly dark-skinned, and seemed kind and somewhat quiet.

Shortly after, a beautiful blonde girl entered, introduced herself, and sat at the table. Then came Omar, a man in his thirties with a light beard. They waited for an hour for Youssef, the fourth member, but he never showed up. Ahmed began introducing the team’s purpose, talking about his mother, the incident, and why he wanted to form this team.

Five minutes into his speech, Youssef entered the room and went straight to his seat at the table. He was also in his thirties, handsome, but seemed reluctant to be there. Ahmed greeted him, "You’re Youssef, right?" Youssef muttered something and sat down, clearly annoyed.

Ahmed felt both angry and embarrassed but decided to continue. However, ten minutes later, Youssef slammed the table and snapped, "Enough! How long are you going to talk about this nonsense that no one cares about? What information do you have? Don’t tell me you gathered us here just to say this." He turned to the others, "Stop humoring him. You must feel the same way."

Ahmed slammed the table too and retorted, "Screw you! You’ve only been here for ten minutes and already pushed me to my limit. No one forced you to come. If you want to leave, go ahead." Youssef was about to escalate the argument, but Ali grabbed his arm and told him to stop. They glared at each other before Youssef sat back down, still fuming.

Silence fell until Mariam broke it, "Since no one else wants to speak, I think now’s the time to talk about why we’re interested in the incident and any related information we know."

Ahmed smiled, "I’m glad you brought this up because I’m very interested in your story—or rather, your father’s story."

Mariam: "Well, it seems you didn’t choose us randomly."

Ahmed gave a sheepish smile—he would have accepted anyone, given the lack of options.

Mariam continued, "My story didn’t start on the day of the incident but earlier. My father was an archaeologist, and due to his work, he frequently visited the pyramids. But one of those visits was anything but ordinary. One day, he came home trembling and stammering, asking if we’d seen what happened at his work on TV. We hadn’t seen anything, and there was no unusual news. When we told him, he was shocked and called his colleagues, asking why and how the government had suppressed the news. But they were equally confused, saying nothing had happened and it was just a normal day."

"My father took out a small notebook and wrote furiously while my mother and I watched, confused and a little scared by his behavior. When my mother asked what he was writing, he said, 'I’m writing what happened before I forget like them.' As soon as he finished, he put the notebook in his bag and rushed out of the house. I waited for him for a long time but eventually fell asleep. The next morning, I woke up to my parents arguing."

"My mother was screaming, saying his obsession with myths had driven him insane or that he was on drugs. He swore everything he said was true. I was too scared to approach, but curiosity drove me to read his notebook. I was only nine but could read a little. What I read sounded like the stories he used to tell me before bed. He wrote that the pyramids had moved from their places, risen into the air, and revealed remnants extending underground. He also mentioned that the Sphinx had moved and that he’d seen a person flying there with large wings, wearing a mask resembling the head of a bird—something eerily similar to the Egyptian god Horus."

Ahmed interrupted, "I swear I’ve read this before in an old newspaper. A mad scientist claiming he saw Horus and that everything fixed around the pyramids was moving." He looked into her eyes, "You’re his closest family. You must know more details."

Mariam: "His insistence on this led to him losing his job and my mother leaving him. It was a tough time..."

Youssef cut in, "Get to the point. No one cares about your suffering."

Mariam: "Despite everything, my father kept returning to the pyramids until he was banned from even approaching the area. So he watched from a nearby building. He’d always call me during these times to check on me. One day, while we were talking, he suddenly stopped and said, 'Damn it! They’ve always been there! Above us!' I asked what he saw, and he replied, 'There’s something different in the sky today,' before hanging up. That was 20 minutes before the incident—the last time I heard his voice."

Omar: "What do you think he saw?"

Mariam: "I think he saw the ship."

Ahmed: "That ship only appeared at the moment of impact. But your words suggest it was there long before, just hidden somehow."

Ali: "For how long?"

Ahmed: "Who knows? It might be older than the pyramids themselves."

Ali: "My story isn’t as dramatic as hers, but I think it explains what her father saw. Minutes before the incident, my grandmother and I were returning from a short trip to our house, far from the incident site. But when we got back, our house was gone, and none of our family members were there—they’d all died. The house was completely destroyed, with fires raging everywhere. Amid the wreckage was a large, strange object. I later realized it was part of the ship, based on news reports. People gathered to put out the fire, but suddenly, the object split in half, and a severely injured person stumbled out, collapsing in a pool of blood."

Ahmed: "What did they look like?"

Ali: "Normal, like any person, but strong and wearing strange clothes."

Omar: "Damn it! I thought they were reptilian humanoids." Everyone stared at him for a moment before he added, "What? It’s a popular theory online."

Ali: "I think that thing came from the ship and somehow ended up at my house. Maybe that’s what her father saw."

Youssef: "Then why was he the only one who saw it?"

Ahmed: "He wasn’t necessarily the only one. Everyone else there died. If he hadn’t been talking to his daughter, we wouldn’t have known."

Ali turned to Omar, "What’s your story? Why are you here?"

Omar: "Me? I’m just interested in paranormal phenomena. I’m not affected like you."

Youssef: "Just interested, yet you went out of your way to come here? Isn’t that excessive?"

Omar: "I thought I’d find exciting things here, and I think I did. What about you? You haven’t spoken yet."

Youssef: "I have my reasons. I’m not obligated to share them."

Ahmed slammed the table angrily, "Screw you! Did you come just to piss me off? You don’t let us talk, and you don’t talk either." Youssef stood up, grabbed Ahmed’s shirt, and said coldly, "Don’t provoke me, or you’ll regret it. Don’t think you’re our leader just because you created this team and rented this place."

Mariam: "Everything you’ve said just proves he’s more of a leader."

Youssef tightened his grip, but Ali intervened, "Stop this nonsense. You’re making a fool of yourself." Omar held Ahmed’s arm and cut in, "What’s that? It looks special."

Ahmed was wearing something resembling a bracelet under his shirt, but it was different positioned near his wrist with an intensely black gemstone. It wasn’t visible until Youssef pulled Ahmed’s short-sleeved shirt.

Youssef let go, and Ahmed said, "This? I inherited it from my mother."

Omar: "Are you sure you’re not hiding anything else from us?"

Ahmed: "Yes. Why would you think that?"

Omar: "Just curious. Sorry if the question bothered you."

Ahmed: "No problem. Alright, our meeting ends here. You can leave now. I’ll contact you with travel details. Our next meeting will be at the airport." He looked at Youssef, "You’re lucky our team is small. I won’t tolerate any more problems. Next time you confront me, you’re out."

Youssef gave a mocking smile and left, followed by the others except Ahmed, who stayed behind.

As they walked out, Omar said to the other three, "Why pretend you don’t know each other? Your acting is terrible. I think he noticed too—he doesn’t seem stupid." He then walked ahead and left the building.

Ali turned to Youssef, "See? Your recklessness and provocations will ruin everything."

Mariam: "Why were you late? We were together just before the meeting."

Youssef: "I stopped at a café. And who says he figured it out because of me?"

Mariam: "You made us interact like that back there."

Youssef: "Not my fault, and I don’t care if it is."

Mariam: "This time, you should care. This is the only lead that person left us."

Youssef: "Damn him! He always does things to annoy me. Why did he send us to this spoiled rich kid?"

Mariam: "We’ll never know if you keep getting in the way like this."
