It had been months since Ferris started his plan, but everything felt different now in December. Whenever he was with Wynona, June was the last thing on his mind. When he was with Wynona and she mentioned Elijah, Ferris would become indescribably jealous. When they were together, he was nervous, his heartbeat fast, and it was hard not to overthink. When he was with her, he was happy. Like really happy. Not the kind of happy he felt when he was with Cole or Aimee. It was different. He did not mind being around her without his contacts. Whenever she looked in his eyes, he could feel how much she adored them and it almost made him adore them as well.
He never felt that way when he was around June. In fact, he hardly felt anything when he was around her. Before, he used to get butterflies at the sight of her, now he does not even double-take when she enters a room. After all the time he spent with Wynona, he had completely forgotten about his plan. When he did think about it, he thought it was ridiculous, but worst of all he felt guilty. He was using Wynona, maybe not anymore, but those were his initial intentions. He knew if he fessed up, it would probably save both of them a lot of trouble, but he could not bring himself to do it. Ferris knew if he confessed, Wynona might not want to be friends anymore and the thought of it crushed Ferris more than he would have liked.
Winter break was supposed to start in one week. Ferris was with Cole sitting in the diner. Ferris had been lost in thought since they had arrived. He was able to maintain basic conversation, if it required "yes" or "no." He was so conflicted he barely touched the melted milkshake across from him.
Cole took a sip from his drink and turned to Ferris. "There's obviously something on your mind. What is it?"
"Oh," Ferris was a little embarrassed. "I just have a lot on my mind."
"I know. I just said that. What is it?" He asked again.
Ferris was reluctant, but he gave in. "I was thinking about that plan I made."
"Okay?" Cole took another sip.
Ferris hesitated. He hated to say it, because Cole was a jerk whenever he said it. "You were right." He looked down at the counter. "It was a bad idea."
"Oh?" A smug grin slowly grew on his face. "What brought upon this epiphany? Perhaps my amazing words of wisdom? You've finally come to your senses and see how smart I am?"
Ferris did not want to tell him anymore, but he was already half way there. "I–I don't think I like June anymore.''
"Alright? What does that–"
"I think I like Wynnie–" He caught himself. "Wyn." Ferris turned to Cole.
Cole raised his eyebrows and was silent.
Ferris slowly nodded. "Yeah…"
"Well," Cole looked down at his shake. "That's an even bigger problem."
"What do you mean?" Ferris asked. That was not what he wanted to hear. If Cole did not have a plan then Ferris was most likely screwed.
Cole sighed. "Okay, let's say you like Wyn and she likes you, too. Hurray, you guys are dating. Oh no, Wyn finds out that initially you wanted nothing to do with her and actually wanted her sister. Now Ferris is sad because he's single. Wyn's sad because she was lied to. And I'm sad because I have to deal with a sad Ferris."
Ferris felt his stomach churn. "But–But, it's fine, right? Nothing is going to happen between us so she never has to find out."
"Yeah," Cole said sarcastically. "Because we both totally knew you were gonna have feelings for her later on. That was all part of the plan."
Ferris glared at him. "The chances of anything happening are slim. I doubt she sees me as anything other than a friend. Besides, I have self control. I'll make sure nothing happens."
"This coming from the guy with absolutely no relationship experience?" Cole rolled his eyes. "Alright, Wheels. I'm trusting your judgment. For your sake, I hope you're right."
After their talk, Ferris could not bring himself to face Wynona that last week. Every time he saw her he felt bad or he got too nervous. He hoped distance would help his feelings go away. He even went as far as asking to reschedule their hangout at her house, which she was very nice about. Hopefully, distance could prove he had not caught feelings, and then they could stay friends and nothing would become complicated.
Once winter break started, the flu started going around which actually helped. It gave Ferris more of an excuse not to see Wynona. In fact after the break started they did not talk at all. It made Ferris feel bad because the last time they talked he was a jerk, but he knew it was for the best. The further they were from each other, the faster he would lose his feelings. Then they could hangout without any consequences.
Ferris made sure to keep busy during the break either cooking, cleaning, or watching movies with Nonna. He kept his distance from Wynona just as he planned. The only problem was he thought about her almost every second. He looked forward to seeing her again and it drove him crazy. They had only been talking for a few months. How could he already like her so much in such a short amount of time?
It was the night before their first day back. Ferris was nervous to see Wynona again. What would he say to her? Would she even want to talk to him after ghosting her all break? In hopes to distract himself he worked on the song. They had a lot, so he was not stressed about finishing it, but he needed something to do and his songs always helped him. He sat at his desk and sang what they had so far.
"As new as dawn, the water shimmers
It glows for you and my love
As new as dawn, the clouds will part
The sun will shine on our intertwined hands
As new as dawn, the wind will slow
When we kiss underneath the moon
I will always follow you
I’ll sing our song whenever you’re blue
I promise you won’t lose me
Together we’ll be free
Every day I’ll sing our song
When the day’s as new as dawn
As new as dawn the voices lower
To listen to our tune
As new as dawn the rain beats louder
It tries to cover our beating souls"
He thought for a while. His mind drifting off every so often to her. Almost ten minutes had passed when he had finally come up with something. He wrote it down and sang aloud, "As new as dawn the leaves fall slower. They want to see…" He trailed off. "They want to see…our…beautiful love?" He thought about the words for a while before writing them down. He rewrote the chorus and only needed a bridge. Ferris spun in his chair trying to rack his mind for anything.
Slowly, his mind drifted back to Wynona. He thought about how complicated it was now because of these unwanted feelings. He thought about what he hoped would happen if he told her the truth. He looked down at the notebook and whispered to himself, "As new as dawn…I'll never leave you…I'll always…I'll always love you through thick and thin…" He slowly wrote it down. Ferris felt immense guilt weighing on his shoulders. He kept going, thinking about what he would do if he told her the truth. If she was mad at him, what would he say to her? "As new as dawn…I'll…I'll never leave you…I'll hold your hand when you're scared…" He wrote it down. His stomach felt heavy as he whispered the words to himself repeatedly.
Ferris groaned into his hands. His writings were supposed to take away the bad feelings, but they seemed to make it worse. Desperate for a distraction he grabbed his phone. He meant to call Cole, but his finger slipped. He panicked and hung up. There was a long silence in the room aside from his pounding heart. Suddenly, his screen lit up. His heart dropped.
Let it ring! Let it ring, Ferris!
Impulsively, he grabbed his phone and pressed the green button. "He–Hello? Hi–Hi." He swore under his breath. "Hi."
"Ferris? Did you call? Why'd you call so late?" She sounded like she had just woken up.
"H-Hey, were you asleep?" Ferris moved to his bed.
"Almost. Did something happen?" She asked. He hated to admit, but the grogginess in her voice was adorable.
Ferris smiled. "No–No, nothing happened. I just…I just wanted to let you know that I finished the song."
"Really?" She sounded surprised, but mostly tired.
"Yeah…" Ferris looked down at his lap. "Sorry if I'm keeping you up, Wynnie."
"No, no, it's fine." She yawned.
Ferris chuckled. "Maybe we could meet up at your place this weekend and work on the music part together?" What are you doing?
Wynona was quiet for a while before she groggily said, "Sure…" She said something else, but yawned at the same time so Ferris could not understand her.
"Okay, well we can talk more tomorrow." Tomorrow? What is wrong with you?
"Mhm…" Wynona's voice became lower.
He sighed happily. "Goodnight Wyn."
"Night…"
Ferris hung up and laid on his bed. A large goofy grin on his face. Then he caught himself. He covered his face with his hands and groaned. "Why the hell did I… This is so bad…" He dropped his hands at his side. "So very bad…"
