They had just finished reading through the song. Ferris sang what he had and Wynona showed him how much she had composed, which was not a lot. He could see how stressed she was, but Ferris was not as bothered. He was distracted. Watching Wynona play on her keyboard, even for a brief moment, was captivating. She looked beautiful when she played. Almost angelic. Her fingers glided along the keys as if she were in another world. The way she made sounds melt together into one elegant melody as if it were another language. He wanted to tell her how much he loved it, but he did not want to send the wrong message either. He needed the feelings to go away, not linger longer.
Wynona was setting her keyboard aside. "Is there anything else you want to work on?" She turned to him, fixing her wrinkled graphic tee.
"Hm?" Ferris was sitting on her bed. "No, not really." He glanced around the room awkwardly. Her room was much bigger than his room, more decorated, and messier. She had a large bed with a big green blanket over it and white pillows on top. There was a desk by the door with a lot of textbooks and what Ferris could only assume was half-done homework. Beside her bed was a small table with a picture of her family. Along the walls were different posters of bands and musicians. There were clothes sticking out of her drawers and her hamper was almost full. It was not what Ferris expected at all, but he loved it.
Wynona smiled and sat down beside him, slipping her hands neatly into her pockets. "Okay, does that mean you're going home then?"
Ferris did not want to leave yet. He had not even been there that long, maybe an hour. It was way too early for him to leave. "Oh, I mean–"
There was a knock on the door and shortly after it opened. Jonathan peeked inside the same large friendly grin Ferris saw when he had met him. "Hey, Wynnie Bear, is Ferris staying for dinner? I'm setting the table right now."
Wynona turned to Ferris and he could tell she wanted him to stay. It made Ferris's heart skip as he nodded. "I'd love to, thank you."
"Thank you, Jonathan!" Wynona called as the door closed.
Ferris turned to her. "You know, there's something I've been meaning to ask."
Wynona stared back. "What's up?"
"I'm not trying to make you uncomfortable, but why do you call your parents by their first names?" It was a question that had been burning a hole in the back of Ferris's mind for a while. He had also noticed that both her parents have straight dark hair like June, while Wynona had curly blonde hair. He would have asked sooner, but he noticed Wynona seemed uncomfortable talking about her family, similar to how he felt about his father.
"Oh, um…" She trailed off.
Immediately, Ferris backtracked. He waved his hands and laughed awkwardly. "No, you don't have to answer that."
Wynona smiled weakly and nodded. Quickly, she changed the subject, "Oh! There was something I wanted to talk to you about."
Ferris nodded for her to continue.
"So, I was thinking about your stage fright. I tried to talk to Mr. Krona, but he was adamant on you singing the song." Wynona frowned apologetically.
"Ah…" Ferris's heart dropped. He did not want to bail out on her at the last minute, but he could not sing in front of people. The anxiety he got in front of crowds was unbearable. Whenever there were more than a dozen sets of eyes on him he felt like he was being burned at the stake. He would spiral, stammering over his words and tripping over his feet. He would make a fool of himself, and worst of all, a fool of Wynona.
She grabbed Ferris's sarm and her smile quickly returned. "But! Mr. Krona never said I couldn't sing with you. So would it help if we sang together? Like a duet?"
Ferris was not sure what to say. He had no idea if it would help and if it did not then he would ruin Wynona's performance. He did not want to disappoint her, but he would regardless if he screwed up. It felt like there was no way he could win, but the last thing he wanted to do for sure was ruin Wynona's night. Ferris slowly nodded and forced a smile. "Yeah… That'll work. It has to."
"I hope so." Wynona sighed and laid down on her bed. She looked at her phone and turned to Ferris. "It's getting late. Are you going to leave right after dinner?"
He slowly shook his head. "I don't have to." He did not want to.
"You can stay." Wynona smiled.
Ferris smiled back. Without thinking, he laid down beside Wynona. Once he did it, he felt like an idiot. They were shoulder to shoulder, and he was sure Wynona could feel how fast his heart was beating. He wanted to look at her, but he knew if they made eye contact he would get flustered.
"Hey, Ferris."
He almost turned, but he caught himself and stared at the ceiling. "Yeah? What's up?"
"You know how you asked about my parents?"
Ferris nodded slowly. "Yeah?"
He took a small glance at her. Wynona was staring at the ceiling with a blank expression on her face. "They're not my actual parents."
"Really?"
"Yeah," Wynona shifted. "I just don't like telling people I'm adopted because then they ask more questions and it makes me uncomfortable."
Ferris turned to Wynona. "If you told me that I wouldn't have pestered you, you know?"
Wynona nodded. "Well, I didn'y know that before… I didn't want you to think of me differently."
"Why would it have mattered?" Ferris sat up. He was an idiot. He was knowingly getting lost in the sound of her voice. He was walking a tightrope and he was not being careful.
Wynona chuckled and shrugged. "I cared about what you thought of me. I mean, I still do."
"Really?" Ferris gazed at her, becoming more lost in thought. Wynona was talking, but Ferris was not listening anymore. She looked beautiful. Her hair was sprawled out around her, forming a halo above her head. Her vibrant green eyes were sparkling. The smile she got whenever they talked always made his heart flutter. Whenever he saw her smile he could only think of the different things he could do just to see it again. It was even better when she talked about her piano. Both her eyes and her smile sparkled and Ferris would get lost in her voice, her laugh, her eyes, her everything. Slowly, as he gazed at her, the self control he claimed to have a few weeks ago began to slip away into a distant memory.
"Ferris?" Wynona looked up at him, still laying down. "Everything okay?"
Ferris did not want to be careful anymore, he was prepared to jump off the rope. Most of all, he did not want those feelings to go away. He wanted them to stay for as long as he could keep them. He wanted to stay with Wynona for as long as he could regardless of the consequences, because she was worth it.
Wynona laughed awkwardly. "Ferris?"
He was tired of overthinking everything. Ferris threw away all his thoughts, all of what was left of his self control and leaned forward and kissed her. The moment their lips touched he woke up and although he wanted to melt into the feeling, he forced himself to pull away. His eyes met with Wynona's beautiful nomad eyes. She looked at him with shock and confusion. Ferris felt his face flush. "I… I shouldn't have done that…" He slowly sat up. "I'm sorry."
Wynona was completely silent. Ferris was about to get up and leave when slowly, Wynona's hand was under his chin. Before he could react, his head was forcefully, but gently, turned back toward Wynona. They made brief eye contact, and then Wynona leaned in and kissed him.
Ferris knew it was wrong, but he did not want to fight it anymore. He quickly melted into this kiss and moved both of his hands onto Wynona's cheeks. Ferris had no idea what to do, but Wynona traced him as if she knew every inch of his body. Her hand slowly moved down his cheek, the tips of her fingers tracing Ferris's neck. Her hands were so soft and gentle. It felt as if the tips of her fingers were dancing on his neck, similar to how she played on her keyboard. It made Ferris shudder as her hands slid past his shoulders and onto his chest.
He was not as bold as her, but he did run his fingers through her hair. It was as soft and gentle as her touch. It was everything he imagined and more. The kiss was so warm and slow. All the kisses from Spin the Bottle were nothing compared to this. Ferris finally understood when she said "a kiss is not just a kiss." He was feeling overwhelmed, unsure of where to put his hands and where not to. It was hard to think when he was lost in everything that was happening.
Wynona, on the other hand, moved her hand slowly from Ferris's chest to his stomach and onto his waist. Her hand stopped there and her fingers started inching under his shirt. The feeling of her fingers on his skin startled him. It sent hundreds of chills up his spine and almost made him gasp. He did not mean to, but he fell back, laying down on the bed.
Wynona was staring down at Ferris. A small smile crept on her face as she leaned in closer and whispered, "Are you ticklish there?"
"Uh…" Ferris could not remember her ever being so bold. He knew her as the quiet girl, the girl who would blush at the sound of her name. He did not hate it, but it did shock him. It was like talking to a completely different person and he loved it. "N–No?"
"Liar." She whispered and kissed Ferris again this time more passionately. One hand sliding under his shirt and the other tracing his arm.
This was too much for Ferris. He had never made out with someone before and it was very clear that she had. He could feel his entire face heating up as if the entire room were a heater. He quickly turned away and covered his mouth. His entire face felt hot and he could not bring himself to look at her anymore.
Wynona was still sitting beside Ferris, and he could feel her gaze on him. "Did I go too far?"
"Um," Ferris did not want to agree and ruin the mood. It was a lot, but he did not hate it. He wished he did not look away, but it was hard turning back to her.
"My bad." Wynona chuckled and laid down next to Ferris. "Do you still want to stay for dinner?"
Ferris glanced at her. She was looking at him. He panicked, feeling his face flush with embarrassment, and quickly turned away. "Um if you want me to."
"I do." Wynona's voice became low.
Confused, Ferris slowly and cautiously looked at her. Her face was bright pink and she was looking at the wall. That was the girl Ferris remembered before their kiss. It was strange. She was so bold minutes before and now she was flustered. Ferris sat up and looked down at her. "Are you okay?"
Wynona nodded, touching her lips.
"Good." Ferris smiled.
Wynona slowly looked back at Ferris and smiled weakly. "Can I…" Her nomad eyes were beginning to sparkle again. "Can we kiss again?"
Ferris's face heated up again. "You–You want to kiss again?" A large grin grew on his face, but he covered it with his hand.
"Do you not want to?" A smug grin grew on her face and Wynona sat up. "You can say no."
"No, it's just–"
There was a knock at the door. Both Ferris and Wynona panicked. Wynona, trying to get up, accidentally pushed Ferris off the bed. Ferris fell on the floor landing on his butt. Before she could get up the door opened and Andrea was looking at them both confused. She looked at Ferris for a while before turning to Wynona who was standing next to Ferris. "Um, dinner is ready…" Before either of them could explain she closed the door.
Ferris had never felt so embarrassed before. He slowly got up and stood beside Wynona. He looked at her and started to laugh.
Wynona laughed with him. "She's going to ask so many questions later."
"I can't out there right now." Ferris laughed harder and sat down on the edge of the bed. "That's so embarrassing."
As their laughter died down, Wynona sat down beside Ferris. She took a few glances at him almost as if she were waiting for something. Suddenly, she leaned in toward Ferris's ear. "We don't have to go yet," She whispered.
Ferris turned to Wynona, their noses touching. "Oh?" A small smile crept onto his face. "Okay…" He slowly closed his eyes, ready this time, and kissed her. In the back of his mind, as Wynona's hands outlined Ferris's body for the second time, and his heart fluttered with each touch, Ferris knew he was digging a deeper hole for himself. He knew he needed to fess up, before it was too late, but he could not anymore. Whatever he was feeling, was too strong to just ignore anymore and too precious to risk losing. He wanted to cave and give in to whatever Wynona had planned. He wanted to feel her lips on his own and her touch on his skin. Maybe he had fallen too far in the hole he had dug, but Ferris just wanted to enjoy the moment. He could worry about the consequences later.
